My reaction to this win:

Fugly, sloppy, unfocused, selfish, and just flat stupid basketball. Got better after half. Never really good.

But if you missed the Shaq era, Cuz treated you to a reenactment tonight. Ben probably turned the game by suddenly getting hot in the third and finally giving us a shooter to loosen that zone. Rudy...was drunk. And at least now we know that he and Casspi are drinking buddies. And we fuglied together a win not nearly as impressive as the boxscore. So, when it makes you 8-5 you take it. But we do that again at any point on this remaining trip, and we are going to get our jocks handed to us, and deservedly so.

NOTE: the Grading Consortiuum is actively recruiting a new squad of graders for this season. And grading wins is more fun than grading losses. Give us a nudge if interested.

Gay ( C- ) -- I'm starting to think that I'am the kiss of death for Gay. He had a tough game tonight. He had four turnovers on the night. At least he balanced it somewhat with six assists. He took the first shot of the game, and it was indicative of how his night would go. It was an open three from the left corner that went in, rattled around, and popped out. He did follow it with a fifteen footer from the left elbow, but then he followed that by driving from the same spot, and turning it over. He went to the bench at 3:48 of the first quarter, and returned at 8:57 of the second quarter. He then dispensed of any hope I had for him righting the ship. He immediately drove the lane and threw the ball away. One of his best plays of the night came next, when he threw a beautiful alley oop from behind the three point line to McLemore who was cutting to the basket. He did start the second half on a good note when he hit a three. The next sequence was again indicative of his entire night. He missed and open straight away three, but we grabbed the rebound and kicked it back out to Gay, who then drove the lane and threw the ball away. On the defensive side of the ball, he had his hands full trying to guard Wiggins, who ended up having a career night. Not all Wiggins points were scored against Gay, but a significant number were. It wasn't for lack of effort on Gay's part, and several of Wiggins shots that went in, had a prayer look to them. He did manage to grab six boards, and had one steal. Amazingly he ended up 5 for 12 on the night, and I'll admit that it seemed worse than that. Thank god that Cousins was an absolute monster tonight. Hey, we won, and that's all that matters. --Baja

Thompson ( D+ ) -- this was always going to be an awkward game for JT, even if the Wolves were healthy as they have decided to replace KLove with a pack of tweeners and blown up SFs. And in the very early going of this one we gave some thought to trying to take advantage of that by going to JT inside, but Minny was, oh noes!!!, in one of those awful zone thingies and it confused our poor little heads so much we just decided to throw the ball out of bounds rather than get it into the post. And unfortunately the matchups started to bite us on the other end, when Jason, seeing no All Star or HOFer out there to frustrate, instead went into sleep mode and let Bennett start knocking down open jumpers. After a touchless little brick thrown off the glass absolutely as hard as humanly possible, finally got his first hoop on a nice little Cuz dropoff just before leaving in the late first. He wouldn't return for the rest of the half as various other struggling frontcourters took over, including even, *gulp*, Derrick Williams who took most of the 2nd quarter PF minutes. JT was back to start the third, and hit while filling the lane on the break 2 min into the quarter, got to the line and hit both FTS to give us a 55-54 lead. Not entirely sure we ever relinquished it. Richard Crenna then decided the answer was to go smaller and smaller and soon JT was trying to post up Chase Budinger, which at least lead to a defensive 3 second call on the Wolves. Thankfully we pulled him before we got to see him work against Zach LaVine. This was nothing on top of nothing. I was thinking D, then thinking well, there wasn't much he could do under the circumstances so maybe C-, then finally just settled in between. He was pretty worthless, but not as damaging as some of our other guys were before being slapped around by the coaching staff at halftime.--Brick

"I don't know if there's a better center in the league, the way he's playing," Wolves coach Flip Saunders said of Cousins, whom the Wolves passed on in the 2010 draft in favor of Wes Johnson. "He's got his head screwed on straight. That was always a question mark. He seems to be very focused." --Flip Saunders

Cousins ( A ) -- That Cousins would be the best player on the floor was a given before the game even started. Pekovic, who has given him trouble in the past on both ends of the floor, was sitting the game out with a hurt wrist. It was almost guaranteed that Cousins would end with a beastly stat-line against the promising but raw Gorgui Dieng. And Cousins had a great, but not perfect, game in a somewhat ugly win against an injury-weakened team that isn't all that good when healthy.

The Timberwolves only hope to contain him was to play a zone defense to cut off entry passes into the post, and that's what they did right from the opening tip. The Kings were unable to get the ball down low and started out the game throwing up bricks from the outside in an ugly effort to start the game. Cousins started out the game well, including an offensive rebound and putback early in the quarter followed by an and-one layup from a nice inside pass by McLemore. He followed that with an acrobatic layup on the fast break after mishandling the initial outlet pass by Casspi in an impressive recovery. He finished the quarter with a strong stat-line of 8 points, 6 rebounds a block and a charge taken.

But it wasn't a perfect quarter. Cousins' lost the ball on the break at around the 8 minute mark in one of several dribbling misadventures on the night. He picked up a second turnover on a three second violation, and forced a last second shot in traffic after dribbling the length of the floor with six seconds left. These unforced errors aside, he was almost single handedly keeping the Kings in the game while the rest of the team was trying to figure out a way to score against the zone.

As has been the case for most of the season, when Cousins sits, the Kings suffer. In a bizarre coaching decision, Malone tried to out-small the Timberwolves, playing Landry at center with Williams, Casspi, Stauskas and Sessions filling in whatever slots they were filling in. It was a mess on both ends as the positionless basketball confused our team more than it did the T-Wolves and the game looked to be turning the wrong way. Cousins got four whole minutes of rest in the first half and, upon returning, immediately scored his second and-one of the evening, followed by some of the worst team execution the Kings have had all year. First McLemore and then Williams turned the ball over with inside passes to teammates who weren't Cousins and were actually better defended than Cousins at the time. Williams' pass in particular was a head scratcher as Cousins was posted up in good position with his man sealed and Williams threw the ball into traffic rather than give it to the big man.

Malone, to his credit, called an immediate time out and sorted the team on what was to happen with the ball. On the next two possessions, Cousins got the ball in good scoring position, first on a beautiful high-low pass from Gay for an easy layup. Second, on a post up in the paint just below the free throw line where he proceeded to move Dieng under the rim, then give him an up and under for a filthy two-handed dunk in the best play of the night.

Defensively, the first half was up and down for Cousins. He had a great block on Dieng and stopped a Wiggins drive cold with verticality. He also took a charge early on and managed to stay out of foul trouble the entire game. The problem was that in the second quarter the team defense was just awful and Cousins was not able to stop all the breakdowns that were happening on the perimeter. If one play of the half summarizes the Kings' first half defense, it would have to be the final Timberwolves' play where a 32 year old Mo Williams just waltzed past Ramon Sessions, forcing Cousins to rotate up to stop the drive and leaving Dieng open for the dunk to put the wolves up by 4 going into the break.

The third quarter started out as the Ben McLemore show as, apparently, the Timberwolves' defensive scheme was to just leave him open no matter how many points he was putting up (hint: it was a lot). Cousins didn't take a shot until the 6 minute mark of the third as he forced up a tough shot inside against a triple team after grabbing the offensive board. It took him until the three minute mark of the third to put up any points on a nice inside pass from Casspi.

Cousins' biggest impact was on the defensive end as the Kings finally decided to start beating this beatable team. Cousins started out the quarter by blocking a Dieng fadeaway which set the defensive tone for the team. The Kings only allowed the Timberwolves five field goals in the quarter, and would have stretched the lead out well into the double-digits without some questionable calls by the officials. In any case, it was a quiet quarter for Cousins, and other than another dribbling misadventure in the open court resulting in a turnover and a defensive three second violation, it was an effective one for Cousins and the team.

After playing almost the entire third quarter, Cousins sat for only the first three minutes of the third as Malone's small-ball rotation could not defend or rebound, as is usually the case with small ball. He hit his first shot of the quarter at the 8 minute mark, an elbow jumper as his first and only make of the night from outside the paint. He followed that with a beautiful made layup through a triple-team a minute later. He did the rest of his damage from the free throw line until the two minute mark when Derrick Williams did a very Derrick Williams thing and drove into three Timberwolves and failed so spectacularly that it gave Cousins the opportunity to seal the game which he did on a quick two-handed dunk. He capped the game off with a steal as Mo Williams was trying to force the ball upcourt for a quick shot in the last minute of the game.

In sum, it was a strong all-around game by Cousins, but you get the impression that he could have scored 50 on the night if given the chance. This would have gotten a normal player an A or A+, but those stupid turnovers on dribbling misadventures bring the grade down a bit --Hadlowe

McLemore ( A- ) -- First quarter for Ben and the Kings was terrible but only resulting in a 2pt deficit. Was missing easy 3’s short and long, double dribbled on a quick move around an opponent. But got a bounce pass to Cousins for a layin and next play Ben went down low and got a garbage basket being in the right place at right time. Throughout game kept seeing Ben down low in rebounding positions. Finally a nice 3 from beyond 3 range. Most of the game Ben was guarding Cory Brewer, a crafty and good shooting 2-guard and at other times guarding 6-8 Budinger or 6-7 Super rookie Andrew Wiggins. Did ok on D thru 2nd,not great but ok. Ben returned for Nik at the 7:30 mark of 2nd and started things off as he DWill made TO’s on consecutive possessions both leading to Wolves baskets. But he then closed out first half with an alley Oop from Gay to salvagfe something. The second half was like a different ball game. Ben came out aggressive and began hitting his 3’s making 4/9 for the game. Feet set, squared away, good looking 3’s all now. Hit two quick 3’s and suddenly half-way thru 3rd Ben has 17 pts! A nice blow past Budinger with screen from Cuz. Throughout 2nd half Ben was very aggressive especially on rebounding down low and defending. A number of times his chest is rubbing on the other player making live difficult. Late in second guarding Wiggins and doing very well. At start of 4th Wolves made 2 consecutive 3’s and Malone had enough and let everyone know. Must have worked as by 5:47 mark of 3rd Ben was 8/14 with 4/8 from 3 and had 6 rebounds. Ben’s ball handling is also much improved these days as is his aggressiveness these last 2 games. Ben's minus is loosing track of his man a number of times on defense.--Cruz

Collison ( B+ ) -- Darren Collison came to the game looking sharp, but settling to 3-pt shots from the corner, which he missed. By all means the shots were legit shots since he had good looks. He collected one assist via Gay. While looking to have sluggish start stats wise he handled the ball very well. After the missed 3-pointers, Collison collected himself and started to move the ball instead of going for his typical 15-20 ft jumpers. Then he started to show off some brilliant drives. Man, is this guy fast. It is really a pleasure to see him kind of slowing down just to accelerate again past the guard like there was nothing between him and the hoop. For some reason, just when Darren was showing really nice ball distributing, Cousins decided to become a center-point guard, which did not look very good and resulted in turnovers. Coming back in the second quarter, Darren was balanced and started to shoot the ball well. There seems to be little synch problem with the team that is much slower than the pace Collison can control. He could bring the ball up much faster, but the team is unable to follow suit. In the 3rd quarter Collison continued to control the ball and saw his assist count go up. The drives to the hoop continued but there was also an unnecessary TO. I was actually pleased with the fact that he didn’t show some of his occasional trigger happiness and played controlled game. Collecting points from the line also the shots started to fall finishing 60% from the field and 50% from 3pt-range is very nice. Towards the end Collison got a bit relaxed and turned the ball over unnecessary. In the defensive end Mo Williams was able to go around him too easy. Considering Collisons speed, that should not happen that easy. In other words, some lack of motivation there. Occasionally trying to keep Brewer did not look too good either. All in all quite nice game for Collison. He is really very fast and Malone should think about some fast break plays for him. Unfortunately, the TOs in the end and some of the defensive relapses kept the score in the B area. --Kingston

Williams ( B- ) -- a was probably less impressed with this one than most people seem to be, but it did get better as it went along until you weren't pulling your hair out at his continued presence on the court. DWill came in against his old team in what turned out to be a straight platoon with JT at PF, and one that DWill became the senior partner in with all the smallball lineups the Wolves threw out there. He did nothing in his first quarter minutes except force a terrible 1 on 3 force on the break that we were lucky to retain. Remained active but selfish in the early 2nd and sicne we weren't exactly doing very well, you wondered why the hell we were persisting in rewarding him for last game in this game. But it turned out that was the gameplan from the start, and when you started looking around to JT rendered impotent, and Rudy and Omri playing like somebody dropped a speed bomb in their Gatorade, you realized there weren't many stretch 4 covering options available all of a sudden. Still, after he made a terrible bad pass TO up top leading to a Wolves breakout and dunk at the 9min mark of the 2nd quarter, and leading Malone to immediately call a timeout, you figured that was it. I mean it had to be right? But again, it wasn't, and he stayed out there as we went back to Cuz and got a whole bunch of undeserved minutes as a smallball powerless power forward the rest of the half. He finally got n open dunk on a cut from Sessions in the final 30 seconds of the half to apparently justify the 15 previous minutes of play. Returned in the late 3rd to guard the smallballers and it turned out to be a much better half. He got the ball in the middle of the zone and got the line for 2 FTs. On a broken play with 8+min left stepped into an open quiick shot three that would have been headslapping if he missed it, but he didn't miss, and it pushed our lead out to 7. A minute later finally tried to make a good defensive play cutting off Wiggins with 7min to go, and made a good skip pass to Sessions across the key (Sessions bricked the three, but it was still a good pass). Played better as the game wound down, and grabbed several strong d-boards down the stretch when Cuz couldn't snag them. Still had one late DWill moment when he forced a ridiculous shot into 2 guys in the final two minutes of the game, but Cuz was there to scoop it up and finish it so it didn't cost us. Because its DWill and he's been a DNP at times this season I was tempted to call this a B, but I absolutely guarantee you after watching that game that we did not have 4 "B" or better guys out there. B- feels more honest. lot of undeserved minutes doing not much, some ugly first half play, but some athletic contributions after the half, and of course we won. Not sure what this one means much going forward. Not many games against Minnesota featuring tiny frontlines in the NBA If Malone puts him on Davis next game I will fly down there and pour a bowl of gumbo over his head. --Brick

Casspi ( D ) -- Not to be outdone by Gay, Omri decided to one up him with an even worse night. Which is why he only played twelve minutes. Omri scored three points on one of six shooting. The Casspi were accustomed to, did show up. He was still going at warp speed, but unfortunately that's all he was doing. Nothing was going in from the outside, and layups were rolling off the rim. It was just one of those nights. He did manage two assists, but only two boards. I wonder if Gay and Casspi shared a meal or drank from the same poisoned chalice. Ironically, after missing several easy or open baskets, the one basket Omri made, was a very tough shot in traffic, and he was fouled. Since we won, it'll be and easy game for both Gay and Omri to forget. I've already forgotten it! --Baja

Stauskas ( D ) -- Nik came in for Ben @ 2:40 mark of first and was not afraid to defend and got block or two. Did not pass on any open shots as he didn’t get any in 1st. First 3 attempt was a bit short. Got a good hustle rebound between 2 Wolves next possession, but then got his feet set for a 3 but air balled it, and added another 3 missed long. .In all a D effort for Nik in first half. --Cruz

Sessions ( C- ) -- was probably happy in the first half of this one as almost the entire rest of the team was playing just like he has all season, and amongst a flock of chickens with their heads cut off he did not stand out for once. He forced a drive and threw it wildly off the glass, and had his knee buckle on the play too. It was odd, because it was one of those uh oh plays where a body part just gives out, but other than grabbing at the knee, he was right back up and playing. The play got him to the line...where he of course missed both FTs. Forced another drive and hit a falling down flip for his only score of the night. But somewhere late in his stint started to look a little more settled and a little more willing to make smart plays. Kept trying to set Stauskas up for threes with drive and kicks, but Nik was having none of it as apparently he's decided the NBA hoop is a foot taller or shorter, or to the left or right of the one he drained all those shots on in college. Defense remains an issue, and Ramon failed to stop penetration on the final possession of the half leading to Cuz having to step up and Dieng scoring behind him. In his second stint was thankfully invisible, because that's good for Sessions anymore. He couldn't knock down open threes on kicks, but that's not his game and people really should know that. But as far as running the team Sessions was just steady enough in this one to actually leave on the floor for extended stretches. He did little, but he wasn't making those same wild decisions. selfish forces etc., and was basically playable. Playable Sessions still = 2pt 2ast in 15min Sessiosn though, though this was hardly a banner effort. Just not a disastrous one.

Landry ( C- ) -- this was an odd little effort. And I do mean little as that 9min will attest to. You know what 39min 22sec (Cuz's minutes) and 8min 38sec (Landry's minutes) add up to? You got it -- 48 min, as that is exactly what Carl was tonight, Cuz's short minute backup as for one night we were finally able to hitch the big guy up for heavy minutes, and because everybody else was farting around we could rarely leave him out for more than short stretches. In those down periods between, we got Carl Landry, sub-compact center. His first stint came as he opened the 2nd quarter and immediately got an offensive board...blew the follow. There was a lot of that going around in the first half. I'd check the water cooler. Even against the Wolves he looked small in there, and seemed to be suffering from a bad case of bad hands. He wasn't out there long before we went back to Mount St. Boogie. He was back again for a mini stint to start the 4th, and started the quarter quickly hitting a turnaround to put us up 9. But a few seconds later he again was not able to close out effectively agaisnt a tall 3pt shoter as Budinger drained a long three over him. Out of the resulting timeout we called a play for him and he got another goo move inside, but a minute later took too long and got smuished on what should have been a freebie. Meanwhile the Wolves would not go away and were scoring far too easily and so we quickly went back to the fullsized post scorer. And that was it for Carl's night. Moreso than just the numbers it felt rushed and uncomfortable as many of our guys did. he did get a few points, and as Cuz's backup that's what you are supposed to do, but we looked confused and stumbling while he was out there playing at being Cuz.--Brick

too many easy points scored by Minnesota, that has to be a cause of concern if that's how they are going to defend on the rest of the roadtrip. That being said, Casspi was driving into the lane like a headless chicken numerous times, gotta love the aggression.

#Cousins literally didn't break a sweat and put up 31 and 15+ boards..............my lord
#Derrick Williams had two good games a row something more rare than a full eclipse, made a HUGE 3 for us in a critical part of the game which really pissed off the Twovles colour commentary guy
#Gay.....seems like Rudy only gets up to play above average teams he was super lazy
#Mclemore = SG of the future for us, dude was terrific
#Casspi, I love that he's driving the ball but he's a decent shooter would like to see him mix it up every now and than, makes him and us even more dangerous
#JT had no real match ups, tough game for him to play well in
#Landry not good again
#Nik................no comment

Even thought Cousins killed him I like Dieng the dude never stops trying and will contest everything, imo in a couple years when he's bulked up and added that mid range jumper hes's going to be a solid player, LaVine looks more NBA ready than Nik and he was a guy they picked cause he had massive potential. The Twolves with a fully healthy roster are bad but they are a bad competitive team if that makes sense. Wiggins looked good as well, honestly the Timberwolves might have got the better end of the deal.

Lesson of the night: Demarcus Cousins is a good basketball player, you can involve him more.
Pretty much this. Look at the Pelicans, they constantly try to break down the defense and feed Davis for easy buckets. He scored 43 tonight because of it. Our team would rather play the hero and take it into the paint 1 on 3 and chuck up garbage or take jumpers. Feed the ball to Cousins.

McLemore is developing into a nice 3 and D guy right now. His shot looks great these days and a lot of his misses are of the in and out variety. His defense is average now which is a massive upgrade from worse defense anyone had ever seen last year.

He still has a very very long way to go with his ball handling. Trouble starting his dribble without traveling. Drives into the lane and leaves his feet without a clue what to do. Just generally doesn't know what to do at all unless he has a clear lane to the basket. Needs to improve his vision big time. That way once he drives he can see where his teammates are at and have a backup plan in case an easy bucket isn't in the cards.

Now you're just greedy and impatient. Ben's just trying out things (finally, a RS game Kings can experiment in!). Last year he did the same, and we found out Ben's horrible at everything. This year his shot and defense are slowly creeping to above average territory (also stopped missing dunks, yay!). Was it the first game of his career, where he "shot through" the bad start? I mean, you could say before, what type of game Ben's going to have by his first couple of shots. Not anymore, it seems. So he tries new things, and it's not like all the new staff is horrible. Just majority. It will get better though, just give it time...

We still have self destructive ways which enable our team to screw up things. We keep improving but, as a team, we are capable of giving it away. Also, we are so talented that we can get away with it better than in the past. But please don't take anything for granted yet nor be surprised that things like tonight pop up again. We're on the road to improved play and team consistency but it may be a slow process. Go Kings!!

Just having an absolute blast watching Davis and Cousins play basketball right now. It's refreshing seeing dominant bigs take over the NBA in this period of basketball that's been dominated by wing players the last 8-10 years.
Hopefully neither bails to the Eastern Conference so we get to see them match up against each other 4 times a year plus playoffs.

Ugly win, but I take it. Actually, these are the wins that prove a team is for real. Bad start, on the road, lots of turnovers, not much energy... And still get the W. As I said before, it's good to see this team getting Ws, and still see a lot of room for improvement.

By the way, last year we won our 8th game on December 21st... Considering our schedule, and that we could very easily have a 9-4 or even a 10-3 record, it's amazing the improvement this team made in such a short period of time. And I have the feeling this is just the beginning.

I actually liked this win a lot. The team was clearly playing below its standards. Probably because they did not expect much from a team playing with a heavily substituted lineup. Nevertheless, they gave a really impressive effort to show that they play basketball too. Mo Williams is still a guy who can make things happen, but Andrew Wiggins will obviously be the next real thing. Man, the guy put up 29 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, added 2 assists, 4 steals and 1 block. That is a stat line that is hard to argue with. Their team was extremely athletic with 7 blocked shots. Casspi got two of his layup attempts blocked by Bennett (one was a clear foul, but still) and even DMC got blocked by Dieng. A young team, but very, very talented. In a year or two, they will become a real problem. This could have easily ended in a loss and that's why I like this W. The team knows how to deal with a bad night and squeeze the W anyway.

It was an alright win, nothing spectacular and the defense certainly needs some extra attention as we let the Wolves minus 4 starters score 101 points. The turnovers, especially unforced ones, need to be controlled. We need to value each possession like it is our last. Efficiency is key, we can't turn it over 3/4 possessions, then not play defense, and expect good things. The second half was solid, but we really cannot afford to start the rest of these games like we did this one, because it will be a slaughter before halftime.

On a happier note, we are 8-5 (8-5!!!). It is good to see progress, especially after so many years of being horrible. We are learning to win on the go, so there will be some bumps, but as long as effort is not in question, I can live with that.

How do you guys think Malone did last night?

I'm not sure this time around, we looked terrible in the first half, but he made good timeouts, grilled the guys, looked much better in the second half.

So I'm not sure if he did a good job to get us back to playing good basketball, or is to blame for a lot of the stagnation.

I give him a ton of credit. I think he gets to much blame for when the second unit continues to be erratic and he's altered those who play to maximize their production.....not sure what else he can do. Players coming out flat in the first half is on the players. It's a tough situation as you want to put in the bench for a spark but they tend to lose leads. So I give coach credit for a solid job. He's gone to DWill for more minutes instead of Stauskas, and whether you like DWill or not, he's being way more productive than Nik who is bad defensively and chucking up airballs. I think he's also upped the minutes of Collison.

So it looks like DWill getting a lot of time at the 4 now? DWill and casspi together a lot on bench

Actually Coach has been pretty good playing guys based on matchups

So Reggie Evans now a fixture on the bench? More JT as backup 5 and more Dwill at 4?

How do you guys think Malone did last night?

I'm not sure this time around, we looked terrible in the first half, but he made good timeouts, grilled the guys, looked much better in the second half.

So I'm not sure if he did a good job to get us back to playing good basketball, or is to blame for a lot of the stagnation.
Other than the brief stints of smallball, he did well. That is a personnel issue as we just do not have a legitimate backup for the center position. It would have been a good night to run Evans at center if anything as we had real trouble securing rebounds when both Cousins and JT were off the floor.

We also saw the team breaking down the zone off the dribble and with good positional passing, something they couldn't do when they were seeing it earlier in the season. In particular, there was a great sequence in the third quarter (maybe the fourth) where Cousins was in the high post and Collison had a live dribble and was looking to get an entry pass. Mo Williams overcommitted to the passing lane, effectively doubling Cousins without the ball and Collison just drove past him to get an easy look inside. It was a smart, court-awareness play that was available against the zone in Memphis, but the team didn't recognize it there. That tells me that Malone has been drilling them as a result of those early problems with the zone.

I think they are "featuring" D-Will a bit more than they have in the past.
