Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Tough tough win that I wasn't sure we were going to get after Minny came out and talent blasted us in the early going, displaying many of the reasons a lot of people think they might be the future of the league. But one of the weapons Minny had little chance to show off was the biggest of all, KAT, as Boogie came up fired up (too fired up) and determined to show the kid who was top dog at the position. After being knocked back, Rudy recovered to start to even the matchup against Wiggins, and when the defense kicked in in the third, we went on a monster 24-1 run to blow into the lead and have the fans chanting MVP! during Cuz's FTs. Then we hung on to win the dogfight down the stretch. Through it all Matt Barnes proved himself maybe the truest heir to the Doug Christie crown, keying much of our turnaround with gritty and skilled play, hitting shots, making stops an making great passes to goose us out of offensive lulls.

For his efforts I hereby declare Matt:

Starters

Featured Grade
Gay ( A ) -- Gay started the game by hitting his first shot, a 16 foot jumper. He then proceeded to miss his next three shots, two of which were forced. He finally got back on the board with a tough drive through traffic, a layup, and a foul. After that he was off and running. He had some help from Barnes, who ended up with 9 assists on the night. Rudy struggled in the first quarter trying to guard Wiggins, but rebounded well in the second half, putting good pressure on Wiggins and forcing some bad shots. Rudy ended up with 2 blocked shots on the night. He also made a clutch hook shot at the buzzer to close out the third quarter. All in all, it was a very nice game for Rudy after a bit of a rough start. All's well that ends well. -- Baja

Cousins ( A- ) -- you have to understand, DMC didn't just have another big game, he once again squished a hyped up media darling contender for his best big man throne. He was getting MVP chants by the third. But he loses a half for getting over excited, getting a tech, and nearly a second fouling out. A huge reason why we won it, but also could have cost us in the close one.

Koufos ( B- ) -- here's the tough thing: Koufos largely did his job, and when he was in his weakside rebounding behind Cousins was a huge factor. But on the other hand the Wolves scored too easily against us during his minutes, and we were better with Barnes out there in his spot.

Afflalo ( D ) -- we need Arron to show up at some point. Rubio really smothered him early, and while he finally stepped up to hit two late shots, he was invisible for most of his minutes.

Lawson ( C- ) -- showed some scrap, but climbs out of the Ds solely when, after missing shots all game long and even growing scared of taking them, he stepped up to hit the huge backbreaking three in the final minutes to give us our margin of victory. For much of the night though size was a problem, and the Wolves were intentionally leaving him open daring him to shoot

Bench

Tolliver ( C- ) -- rapidly becoming one of those numberless guys that's hard to grade. But he has to hit a shot here at some point, and the lack of talent on our bench helped get us into real trouble in the first half. Second stint was better, made some hustle plays.

Barnes ( A ) -- yeah, and here came Good Matt again to the rescue, grimacing and holding his ribs repeatedly throughout the game. It was his heady plays as much as anything that stabilized us, and he made some great defensive saves and blocks for us down the stretch as we hung on.

Casspi ( C ) -- he got 11th man minutes n the first half, but looked like he was scared to make a mistake. Grabbed a few boards missed a three and got a ball knocked away inside, but mostly was just trying to stay out of the way and fit in.

Cauley-Stein ( C- ) -- 8min is long enough to try to give a guy a grade, but I think the best that can be said here is that he was a little better. Made one solid move on offense, got spoonfed a dunk on nice ball movement on the other. Still showing bad hands on the glass, but didn't feel as fluttery or lost. Just kinda like Omri, looked like he was trying not to make mistakes.

Temple ( B- ) -- with almost no numbers of any kind, and certainly no PG numbers, a grade this high seems suspect, but Temple was subbed in and out all game long to give us little bursts of defensive size and length, and you felt more secure when he was in there. We also won those more defensive minutes, which may not be a coincidence.

McLemore ( B ) -- went back and forth here. Ben screwed up quite a bit this game, but his successes often came right on the heels of his failures, and he kept at it, and eventually hit a couple of big shots in the early 4th to buy a little more time for Rudy and Cuz to rest. Finally left when Lavine began to heat back up against him, and Joerger wanted to vet up and cut down mistakes for the stretch.

I loved the early substitutions on the whole starting five. Coach needs to do that every time if he feels the players aren't ready to play from the jump. Wiggins continues to be a Kings killer, shout out to Brick for that one. LaVine did some work as well, very quick and just leaps effortlessly. Barnes' energy and grit was the game changer here, they kept chipping and chipping away at the lead...didn't really think they had it in them but I'm glad they proved me wrong for the night. Dunn is probably co-MVP of the night. Rubio hurt, let the Dunn era begin possibly? I'd like to see that.

For player of the game, it's hard not to vote for the Boogie monster as he dominated and kept the Kings in the game with his scoring -- but I voted for Barnes instead. Anybody that watched the game knows why. Dude was everywhere and doing everything. What a timely block on Towns.

I also want to give props to Ben McLemore. While still inconsistent, he's had a nice stretch in each game thus far and tonight hit a couple big threes -- when Cuz and Rudy were resting up for the stretch run -- that stalled Minnesota's comeback.

Ben had a huge stint in the fourth, he isnt perfect but you cant say the kid isnt going for broke, his scoring punch off the bench is really welcome.

The big difference this year is that when he messes up or misses a shot, he just puts his head down and tries again.

If last year's Ben had been devoured by Kawhi as he was a couple nights ago, he'd still be sulking.

I'm watching NBA Gametime and they were just clowning Coach Joerger for pulling all 5 starters after the slow start. I think it was Danny Granger (might have been Dennis Scott) that referred to it as "college-esque" and that he wasn't a fan of the move because they're grown men.

Give me a break. It worked. Not only that, play like grown men and you won't get benched.

Wow, can we talk about that defense though?

Cousins almost completely shut down KAT. Yeah KAT still shot 50%, but his ball denial was amazing. The way he forced KAT into tough positions. The way he denied him his spot on the floor. Wow.

Wiggins is a star in the NBA. He had his way early with Gay, but Gay came back in the 3rd and shut down Wiggins. Wow. I know Wiggins came back alive in the 4th quarter, but that 3rd quarter stance Gay had, was amazing.

Oh, and shout out to Omri. Played a short spurt of 4-5 minutes or something, didn't log anything it, but seemed like he was a good presence on the floor.

Great comeback led by Joerger, Barnes, Cousins, and Gay.

Lawson was really building a house out there brick by brick until that back breaking corner three in the 4th.

Collison is a much better fit with the starting unit. those wide open 3s that Lawson was missing, Collison would have made most of them.

I love the gritty nature of this team but we need Collison back ASAP and Afflalo to start making some shots to take the pressure off Cousins and Gay.

Some thoughts on the team as a whole:

I listened to the Kings Insider Podcast and James Ham said that Ty Lawson is still figuring out the offense. It feels pretty apparent in what we've seen. He seems confused at times on where to go. I think Collison has adapted to it a bit quicker, but that's because some of the stuff that's been run is similar to Malone's sets, Collison is a confident shooter and Lawson had most of his years in the dribble drive offense with Karl.

Oddly, the "next big to Boogie" spot is now the least settled spot in the rotation. If you accept that Ty is going to remain for the year, and, as well, remain solid for the year then the PG spot is determined. With Rudy showing up and doing well, the wing spots are solid as well. (Overflowing actually. Anyone remember the Donte Greene is your best SF years?) Aflalo is what the team has lacked at SG, just a solid reliable player. The bonus of AA is that now Ben has seemed to taken on the bench scorer role, with less pressure on him and more assurance of what he is to do. Come off the bench, hit jumpers and be a threat. He's no longer vying for a spot. He's filling a role.

So the oddity is really who to pair with Cousins in your best line-up? Kosta has always been a bit odd and redundant. He was signed to be a back-up and now he's starting. WCS is struggling to adapt like Ty. Tolliver has not hit his shots which greatly reduces minutes. Barnes has become their prime time PF right now but it's beating up his body. This is the one thing that will fly under the radar early but is ultimately important.

I hope people realize Temple's role now. His defense in the third was very important.

--- Everyone likes Joerger*. ---

* Casspi needs a role, but he got minutes tonight. I think him and Tolliver are battling for the same spot right now.

Agreed on the entire post and especially the bolded. The good thing is we're deep as a team. KK seems to be the ill fitting peice right now but WCS isn't challenging him for the starting job as of yet. I don't want to derail the thread but how does a KK for Amir Johnson trade sound?

Not since Kawhi Leonard last year dismantling Pg13/Jimmy Butler back to back have I seen what Cousins did the last two games to KAT/LMA he both made them look like children when he was on them and than abusing the entire opposition on offense.

Matt Barnes was just killing it with all the little plays that added up into massive one's he's easily been the runner up MVP for the team so far. So far Ty/Ben/Cuz/Rudy/Barnes have played up to there level while everyone else has has been pretty sub par (Temple/KK have been ok).

Side note if the team is somewhat intact (if Cousins is here next season) I would throw a near max deal to Dieng (he will get a massive deal regardless) to come play next to him, he's got a mid range jumper and is athletic enough/big enough to cover PF's/C. The guy has improved a ton.

I was a big proponent of getting Amir last couple of years, especially due to him slowly expanding his range, but right now he looks as comfortable as Willie shooting from outside - at least, that's how he looked against Charlotte, who gave him all the space and time, and he bricked everything.

I love it. Don't know why this hasn't clicked till now, but Dieng is truly an incredible fit next to DeMarcus. Better than Prime Ibaka really because he can guard the big C's too.

Dieng is a great piece to try and target too because Minny really doesn't have the freedom to throw a max deal to him with Towns, Wiggins, Lavine extensions all looming in the next few years and Rubio on the books for another 3 years.

I think that'd be the perfect opportunity to dangle WCS in front of them. Save them from having to make that decision with a cost controlled big who brings some of the same elements as Dieng.

I'm still hanging my hopes out on getting Anthony Davis to come here :p

Rudy, Boogie and Barnes all deserve Player Of The Game. Wiggins is a nightmare and Rudy found a way to muscle up on him and abuse him in the paint. KAT is the heir apparent and Boogie was having none of it. Boogie dominated anyway you slice it up. I like the starting unit with twin Bigs then bringing in Barnes and/or Temple early for Defensive help on players like Dudley as we saw in Phoenix. Barnes was a game changer with his intensity and controlled aggression. It helped that his 3 point shot was falling.

When Collison comes back how will that change Temples role? He could become an important Defensive replacement coming off the bench. Coach Joerger will be able to choose Afflalo, McLemore or Temple at the 2 depending on who is hot. If a PG is giving the Kings fits Coach can put Temple on him. Overall masterful job Vlade and his crew did putting these guys together.

It did work. And I give coach credit for making a ballsy move. But you can only get away with that so many times before it will backfire. But I'm pretty sure that coach knows that.

It is so refreshing to see a well coached team that seems to genuinely like each other. It hasn't been since Malone was coach where we seemed to all be on the same page. Barnes and Lawson look like steal, McLemore has confidence again, and Rudy Gay is playing some damn good defense and trying in general. I am quite happy with the direction this train is headed. My one worry is Afflalo. He looks old and lost out there.
