More WHEW! Actually not quite a whew! as I look at this more as a gift. I had assumed we would get this one, wasn't even going to bother being worried about it, and did not really develop much of a rooting interest until I suddenly realized we might legitimately lose as we fell behind by 10 with less than 6 minutes to go.

So, quick and easy theme in honor of the Wizards collection of, er, "talent" theme = Great Character Actors

Nocioni ( B- ) -- along with Kevin doing all our early scoring, but the defense was another matter, and he even pulled the Cisco and fouled Jamison on a 3pt shot to help the Wizards with their explosion -- fouled him hard too. Think we shut him down for the rest of the half afterwards, as Natt sent a strong message to the Wizards' bench about who the low dog on the totem poll really is. Went down inside effectively in the third and was physical on Jamison on the other end, although it shoudl be noted that Antawn was the only guy scoring for the Wiz that period. Repeatedly called for the ball at the three point line in the 4th but missed a number of open threes to help our lottery cause. As a strong 4/3 has the attributes to maybe contend with Jamison, but lost the battle again tonight, and his last tow opponents have combied to score 81.

Vincent Schiavelli -- born with a rare connective tissue disorder that explained his bizarrely elongated features, he rose to fame in One Flew Over a Cuckoos Nest, had a major role in Ghost, and appeared in literally hundreds of movies and TV shows before passing away a couple of years ago from lung cancer at 57.

Thompson ( A- ) -- lit up by Blatche in the early going and you were thinking, oh boy, here we go again, but eventually turned into a strong performance. Settled in against smaller opposition to rack up the boards, but was unable to finish around the rim before half on anything other than being set up for dunks. Killed stubby groundbound Darius Songaila in the third, going over him again and again for boards and finishes and getting into several hustle battles down on the ground with him. Was also I think the only King to ever give the Kings a lead when he hit 2 FTs to make it 83-82 late in the third before we resumed our quest for the bottom. Some low blocks on sloppy Wizards guards, and on another night when our interior defense was putrid, Jason was at least trying in there. Had a couple of tough calls go against him, including what looked to be a terrible one to foul him out with 2 minutes to go. 14pts 14rebs and 4blks works just fine for a young big.

Brian Thompson -- with a huge predatory jawline and deep gravely voice, Brian has been the villain in dozens of movies and TV series. He's played psychopaths, aliens, vampires, klingons, you name it. Every once in a while he will mix in a tough guy special forces dude or something of that ilk. I remember distinctly his first major role, as a psycho serial-killer in Cobra across from Stallone. Had the perfect look and voice to really ham it up. Actually remmber his very first bit role ever as well, although I never knew it was him -- his debut was as the guy who gives Arnold his clothes at the very beginning of the Terminator.

Hawes ( B+ ) -- get this, Spencer in March has scored 20, 20, 19, 11, and now 20 pts. Get your 20ppg center right here folks? Just don't ask him to rebound or defend... Able to work freely over Songaila early, but Songaila was able to score back as we had no interior defense at all. No defense on Blatche either after switching onto him. Did break out a lot of offensive moves, both inside and of course all the way out to the 3pt line, and had a very effective first half...on one side of the ball at least. Slowed down and got finessy in the third, and the rebounding fell off even as our defense inside got tougher. Was blocked several times inside in the 4th, although the last one may have been a foul, and he picked up a technical for barking about it that would cost us at the end of the game when Cisco's toe on the line left us one point behind with 3 seconds to go when it could have still been tied wihtout giving up the free point. Didn't necessarily feel as good as a 20 and 9 game, but on the night our young center went for 20 and 9, and our young PF went for 14 and 14, and those are things to watch for down the stretch. If there is a way out of our mess, its through those kids. Now if they could only defend somebody. Anybody...

William Sanderson -- "hi, I am Larry, this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl" launched this prolific character actor on a long career of strange offbeat characters that has lasted over 20 years now.

Martin ( C ) -- scored our only early points as we were down 14-4 within 3 miniutes, and then settled back and worked his way to a completely average (for him) 12pt first half. Actually contained pretty well by Dominic McGwire in the third, but scored whenever left open off the double or help defense, or whenever he could get somebody on a switch. Used the up fake and jump into the guy move repeatedly to get to the line. Began to have a lot of turnvoer probelms with guys just picking him clean in the open court. Gets another pair of goat horns to add to what must look a hunting lodge at this point in his bedroom as he choked badly down the stretch. Again. And this was actually a good thing for us. Such a perverse season. In any case not only scored nothing in the 4th quarter, but after getting sent to the line on a touch foul at the 1:30 mark, choked not one, but both FTs, and when the game winning three at the buzzer was drawn up for him? Clank. Kings lin! Kings lin! What had started out pretty average, briefly turned pretty good, eventually turned fairly ugly as it was another 24 points on 14 shots!!!! night, except that it was on 5-14 shooting, with misses in the clutch, and 6 TOs.

Brad Dourif -- another famous character actor launched by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dourif has both the distinctive looks and distinctive voice of a true character actor, and has been playing characters with a dark side (or just plain dark, twisted, and often insane ones) for 30 years now.

Cisco ( B- ) -- with Bobby out, and it being Beno's first game back, Cisco actually got the start to this one at "point guard". We were down something like 25-12 with that strategy before he came on strong down the stretch of the quarter to pull us back somewhat. Was kind of it for the first half, as other than a a couple of solid passes, did little else as Beno reasserted himself at the position. Reemerged late in the game as a serious threat to our quest for that top pick, and I am thinking at this point that there really is no need to risk further injury to that finger and maybe we should just shut the dimwit down for the season just ot be safe. Or at least assign one of our 17 soon to unemployed assitant coaches over on the sidelines to be in charge of giving Cisco's finger a little smack right befre crunchtime of every game from here on out. Tried to hurt us again this time out, with us down 10 in the final minutes suddenly canning a three, then drawing a foul, and slicing that lead in half with 4 minutes to go. Then stepped up and tried to do the unthinkably hoirrid, attempting to knock down a game tying three with 3 seconds to go to force OT after we had it in the bag. He, and we, got bailed out when the refs ruled his toe was on the line by the fractionist of fractionist of an inch, saving him a trip out behind the woodshed for one more night at least. But too close! So largely ineffective most of the game, but clutch shooting nearly sank us.

Tommy "Tiny" Lister -- at a listed 6'7" 300lbs and with a infamous scowl dating back to his wrestling days, "Tiny" is more physical presence than actual actor (which is immediately evident if you have ever heard him deliver a line). But its an extremely effective formula, and one that has seen him rack up hundreds of credits in the past 20 years as "massive brute sometimes with, sometimes without, a heart".

Solomon ( C- ) -- first man off the bench as our reserves tongith consisted of three small guards (Solomon, Beno, McCants) and one "power forward (Greene). And it was immediately evident that his big night against Cleveland had gone to his head as now he apparently thinks he's a primetime 3pt chucker, and was bombing, and bricking, away in the early going. Since we really weren't counting on getting another Quincy Douby back, he lost the rest of this first half minutes to Beno's reemergence. With Beno starting after half, and the rotations more reasonable, was able to come off the bench to harass Juan Dixon's dribble in the third after the Wizards decided to use him as the backup PG, but unable to keep Dixon from gunning up shots. On the other end continued unabashedly gunning threes into the early 4th, finally hitting one through sheer persistence, but not helping at all.

Steve Buscemi -- while perhaps representing a step up in class because of the sheer number of A-list movies he's been in, like all great character actors Buscemi is instantly recognizable with his wild bug eyes and carries his character with him -- you always know what he repesents instantly, even before he has said a line. He's going to be twitchy, neurotic, high strung, probably untrustworthy and/or cowardly, and full of sarcastic quips as the comic relief.

Greene ( C ) -- got the early call and quickly scored a hoop on the break, had a nice strip inside in the early 2nd, but then threw up one of those badly bricked 3pt heaves that just make you wonder. Didn't do much else of note, and his +/- of "0" was about right on the night. Is mostly playing out of position, but right now basically he, Spencer and Thompson are getting almost all the minutes as our bigs, and we've been looking for those kids to get those minutes all season long.

Judi Dench -- I wanted to add at least one woman to this list, and I could not think of any with a stronger, more well defined screen presence than Ms. Dench. As a beknighted (ok, bedamed) Oscar winner she probably rises above the level of a mere character actress, but she so often plays that character -- roughly translated "tough old broad with a sharp tongue" -- that it has completely defined her later career.

Udrih ( B ) -- as you may have been able to tell from the wild house parties breaking out all over Sacramento, Beno was back. Consented to return to the team, for whatever reason, and even took an early charge on defense as our new defensive captain. Hit a few shots before halftime, but looked rusty trying to find other people. Still a steady enough performance to quicklty put the Cisco as starting PG experiment on ice, and Beno started the third and ran the point for most of the second half. Was pretty effective with it too, especially when compared to the others trying to play the position (Solomon, Cisco, McCants), notched 7 assists, and was pretty efficient with his offense. Soid return.

Christopher Lee -- the amazing energizer bunny of character actors, Christopher Lee's first screen credit was in 1948. If he makes it one more year, he will have acted in 8 different decades. And he's still active, still going strong at age 86 off of late career hits in the LOTR and Star Wars series. At 6'5" with a long hawk's nose and a silky delivery, he's normally cast as a villain, an intellectual, or both. He's played Dracula, played the mummy, played Sherlock Holmes, played Saruman the White, in more than 260 screen credits over the last 60 years he's just about played it all.

McCants ( C ) -- not sure what is up right now, but seems to be losing hsi spot on the team after that great string of performances after he intially arrives. Came in with a quick foul, was badly off 3pt heave -- missed by a foot at least -- but did show hsi strength once again when he got switched off onto Javale McGee and just stoned him in the post (McGee is 6'11") but got shot over anyway. Next time the Wizards had the ball it was on the break, and McCants was the guy back against McGee again -- hit him hard, spun him, and McGee just threw the ball up whirlbird style and made it anyway. Mostly just fouls in the first half, as he was in foul trouble again with 3 in the second quarter, and in what has to be an alarming development for him, he never returned after the break.

Danny Trejo -- and hey, why not, I'm late on these last couple so I'll take the request to fill the last one. Its a solid choice anyway. Danny Trejo, perennially cast as the tough, convict, assassin, biker, eternal badass. But the funny thing is that Trejo WAS a convict, criminal, drug addict, boxing champion badass. He spent most of his youth in various prisons for armed robbery, was hooked on coke (not the drink), and won several inter-prison boxing titles. When he got out and cleaned up in the 1980s it was a very short hop over into the sort of roles he always gets. Has a sense of humor about his past though (although you wonder if his victims do). Bit of trivia: Robert Rodriguez always casts him in his movies. That is a) because Rodriguez is an overgrown adolescent obsessed with freakish stories like Trejo's; but also b) because Trejo is Rodriguez's 2nd cousin.

Baby Ruths were my FAVORITE growing up, and still come in a strong top 3 or so, but I had to go with the peanut butter cups.

Brick -you are evil - making me choose between my 2 FAVS - reeses and kit kat - I went with reeses cuz at least there's some nutritional value in peanut butter.

I read the theme but not the grades but I just want to add how much I loved the war theme (knowing nothing about warfare myself -- who knew strategy was involved). Big props -- I also like how you ended with the worst player on the court matched with the most devastating weapon. Great post.

OK now that I've read tonight's theme I have to vote with a Hershey's Bar -- though in my youth I would have went Almond Joy or Kit Kat. Another good theme -- thanks.

based on the comments, it looks like Reeses (my favorite blizzard going away) would stomp the hell out of Snickers (my favorite candybar) in a head to head runoff... I don't even wanna know how bad. But how can you guys ignore the convenience factor - it is a hassle to eat a pair of reeses cups while driving, not to mention dangerous. Oh well, I can admit when I'm beat.

I gotta go with Mars... my all-time favorite (just think Snickers with Almonds).

Also, this three game stretch of Lose by 1, lose in OT, and lose by 2 have been ideal for the Kings. They are not tanking; they are just losing REALLY tight games.
