Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Christmas2.jpg

And because its a new day, the grades will be up here, tonight.

This is one of those games we might very well have lost last year. Cuz was distracted by saavy play from Dudley, who he had to guard, and physical double teams, got into early foul trouble, and in any year in recent memory but this one, that might have been that as our bench would have come in and we would have been down 14 by the time Cuz returned. But its a new dawn, and this time instead of being down 14 by the time Cuz returned, we were up by at least that much. And as player after player filed in off the bench amazingly you dreaded seeing none of them. They all were helping, being pros, making their contributions. The bench did wobble in the late 3rd/early 4th after Cuz left a 2nd time, but again, we were the pros our there. We stabilized the kiddie run the Suns had made, hit a few backbreaking shots, and just worked and worked the lead back over 20 again. We've all seen this for years and years. Just for all those years we were the kiddie team having this done to them. Tonight it was finally our turn to take the youngbloods out behind the woodshed and learn them a lesson.

Starters

Gay ( B ) -- started this one off in fugly invisible fashion again, forcing shots, breaking the offense, and again not looking comfortable. But worked his way into things, kept making defensive plays, and played an important role in helping us reestablish order after our lone wobble in the late 3rd/early 4th. Ended up with a nice statline and as a positive factor.

Cousins ( B+ ) -- got off to a ragged start looking uncomfortable vs. Dudley's saavy, and got himself into foul trouble to boot. Difference this year is our bench came in and actually opened the lead, and when Cuz did snap into domination gear in the third, it was all over. Grumpy, objected to Suns physical play, and still dropped a cool 24pts in 25min.

Koufos ( C- ) -- missed all those fugly little flips and hooks of his this time, but the larger problem was that his presence forced Cousins to guard Jared Dudley, which was an early issue for us before bearing fruit after half. Made some stands inside around the rim.

Featured Grade
Afflalo ( B ) -- Wow! What a team game and on the road as well. Everyone played defense all the time except for some lapses in 3rd quarter. And on offense, coach mostly went “small ball” with everyone sharing the ball and scoring with the bench contributing 42 pts. Afflalo’s play is beautiful to watch, in the first half getting in the chest of Booker on the perimeter and preventing him from driving holding him to only one FG for first quarter and a half. On offense, smart play, picking nice open shots, hitting both his 3’s. Four "A" grades for starters in first half including Afflalo (but not Koufos) who was on Kevin Booker, and vice versa all the game. Team defense relaxed a bit too much in 3rd quarter allowing the Suns to score 29 points. Booker began driving with better Suns passing finally scoring a bit more despite Aflalo’s defense. Throughout he always seemed to be in the right spot at the right time and rarely ever losing his man. Fought through every screen to get “over” most times to stay with Booker. Only took 7 shots in 26 min. A solid performance and big step up from 3 years of Ben. -- Cruz

Lawson ( B ) -- started the game off hurting the Suns with his quickness, and sticking his nose in there on defense and the glass. Maybe tired a bit, and certainly later in the game found himself surprisingly challenged by some gradeschooler the Suns called up named Ulis. But still an important guy steadying the PG position on the night.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Tolliver ( C+ ) -- part of an early bench explosion, as well as a later bench struggle. Fairly productive but missed his threes from all over and never had the impact he sometimes did in preseason.

Barnes ( A ) -- just a flat "+" out there. Came in defended, got physical, was on the glass, got a ridiculous flagrant called on him, held back Cuz on one play where Cuz could have gotten a T, and took advantage of the Suns defense leaking out on the break, and draining big threes to help bury them. Great debut.

Cauley-Stein ( C- ) -- opened the game with two big open court dunks from Ben, but never showed that chemistry with anybody else, and while not disastrous, still looked uncomfortable out there, feeling his way.

Temple ( B+ ) -- nice performance in his backup PG debut, as we suffered little form his creativity issues, and got a major boost as he repeatedly dribbled to spots and smoothly knocked down midrange Js to break Suns runs.

McLemore ( B- ) -- grade exceeds production here because for the first few minutes after entering, Baby Ben had grown up and came in with an impact pop, confidently pulling up for Js and dishing assists to Willie. Then disappeared and became Ben again for the remainder.

Casspi ( C+ ) -- and so a question was preliminarily answered as to who might lose out in the minutes crunch from suddenly having so many solid vets on team. And made a couple of those lose TOs that Joerger hates. but recovered and delivered a few good minutes of first half play.

Richardson ( INC ) -- in the final two minutes we finally countered their kids with our kid. Missed one makeable pullup J for his debut.

Lawson is a great addition to our team. I wish we signed him on a multi-year contract at that price.

On the opposite spectrum, Kosta is garbage.

Lawson's defense on Bledsoe was sweet to see. Vote for the floor general slightly over Rudy. Lots of good performances tonight for first place Kings!

That first run Ben McLemore had was the best I've seen him play in a long time. And it jump started our boys to a big first half lead. Ben didn't do a lot after that, but he got my vote for swinging the game in our favor.

Cuz and Rudy closed it out in the 2nd half -- along with damn good "team" defense.

I voted for Ben. I've only seen the first quarter so far :).
Eh, he doesn't do much after the 1st quarter. He misses his next 4 shots, and doesn't really take anymore after that.

Was still really active on defense for the rest of the game though.

I had to vote for Gay. The dilemma with Gay is that he's a blackhole on offense. However, he's a blackhole who knows how to make his shots. When his shot is on, he's hot. We needed buckets during that Suns' comeback without Cousins in the game, and Rudy provided. I'm fine with iso-black hole Gay as long as he can make his shots. He had a very good game all around. His defense was impressive. Forced TJ Warren onto all sorts of bad shots.

IMPRESSED WITH OUR DEFENSIVE SWITCHING. Joeger knows how to do it right...

This game felt like watching where Malone left off but with a better supporting cast. Cousins and Gay just pounding them inside, and we have a guy like Afflalo who can chip in there too. Joerger is going to have a tough time getting a rotation down.

How do you guys feel about this tweet from the official Kings account? https://twitter.com/sacramentokings/status/791499503756988417

I don't care for it. Seems immature to come from the franchise and especially in response to an innocuous tweet
about the season being a week away from the Suns. Cutting out external nonsense like this would be a welcome change.
Yeah this franchise should have no business rubbing in losses, Kings social media has always seemed like some college kid running it.

It is hilarious. Seriously though, it's how most social media run by teams operate now. No big deal

Defensively he sometimes looks good. Offensively he sucks in every way. Just like JT sucked offensively.
Well offensively all you can expect of him is to set good screens and roll hard to the basket, its a good thing he is on a team now that is defensive focused.

It is the modern equivalent of trash talk you would see or hear on the blacktop. No big deal. Not my style personally though.

When Ben first entered the game, the Kings were down 18-14. They immediately went on a 14-0 run -- which he greatly impacted. When Ben exited, they were up 42-26. They never really lost that lead the rest of the game.

I don't think it's a big deal either. Along with it not being your style, it has never seemed like it is the Kings/Sacramento's style to me, which is why it feels a bit off-putting to me. Oh well!

The Suns had it coming from the time they made their gorilla dress in a fat suit and shame Oliver Miller.

Kings won this one with their bench, Cousins didn't do anything in the first half, neither did Gay...the bench came in and expanded the lead and the rest of the team held the fort down. Disliked watching Cousins trying to guard Dudley out there, still don't know why Koufos is starting with him...not a big fan of that at all.

  • Lawson appears to be a steal at the minimum. We're going to be spoiled if he keeps playing the way he did tonight. Didn't force the issue and let the game come to him while using his speed/quickness to get into the lane.
  • I'm glad a coach was able to resurrect Afflalo's defensive intensity. I thought he did a great job on that end tonight while just being the steady presence we need on offense.
  • Gay was the one player that didn't seem to fit in the beginning, but he picked it up later on. Not sure if it was the first couple shots that got him going or that double block that peaked his interest.
  • Cousins was much more patient on offense and took what the defense gave him. His defensive rotations were pretty solid tonight and the charges were great. The reach in foul in the beginning was a bonehead move and moves like that can really hurt this team if he's forced to sit out extended minutes. We need the big fella out there!
  • Koufos played good defense tonight, but him & Cousins together continues to look like a poor fit. This is the one move from Joerger so far that I'm not onboard with. I'd prefer a new starter next to Cousins
  • Temple was impressive. He just knows what to do and where to be on defense. His midrange game was surprising. He was feeling it tonight. You can't ask for much more from a backup PG who is really a SG
  • McLemore looked great when he first entered hitting all of those shots. The team set some good picks to free him up for those jumpers. I can't complain about his play tonight. I hope he keeps it up, but he seemed to disappear again when his shot wasn't falling. His defense looked to be improved and am interested to see how it continues as I get more minutes to watch him play
  • Barnes looked very solid. He's one of those guys that doesn't necessarily look like he's doing a lot, but he's helping a team win. He doesn't seem to make mistakes when he is out there and plays very within himself, controlled, and smart. I think I'm giving my Casspi minutes to Barnes at this point
  • Casspi played fine in the limited minutes he received, but for me, it's been a Barnes or Casspi sort of debate when it comes to the rotation. At this point, I have to give the edge to Barnes in the rotation. I would be okay seeing Casspi getting limited minutes considering some players are going to be cut out of the rotation
  • Tolliver looked steady in this one. I liked his decision making and rebounding. It was a bummer that none of his 3 balls fell, but the defense definitely respected that shot. Just because your shot isn't falling it doesn't mean that the threat of your shot isn't impacting the game. I like what I saw.
  • Cauley-Stein was impressive down low when defending the post. He seemed to hold his own down there against Len and didn't look like he was overpowered. His defense was really good today. Offense is still a work in progress, but I'm totally fine with his offense/defense tradeoff right now.

The rotation is going to be hard for Joerger this year. He had 6 rotation players under 20 minutes today and it was a game where Cousins only logged 25 min and Collison was out. I can only imagine what that will do to the rotation with an extra 35 min going to Cousins & Collison.

I'm thinking we could roll with this rotation when we're at full strength...

PG - Collison (22 min) / Lawson (26 min)
SG - Afflalo (26 min) / Temple (18 min) / Collison (4 min) / McLemore / Richardson
SF - Gay (32 min) / Barnes (12 min) / Temple (4 min) / Casspi
PF - Tolliver (20 min) / Cauley-Stein (14 min) / Barnes (14 min) / Labissiere
C - Cousins (36 min) / Cauley-Stein (12 min) / Koufos / Papagiannis

Cousins - 36 min
Gay - 32 min
Collison - 26 min
Lawson - 26 min
Afflalo - 26 min
Barnes - 26 min
Cauley-Stein - 26 min
Temple - 22 min
Tolliver - 20 min

That leaves McLemore, Casspi, & Koufos as the odd men out. I'd rather prioritize the defensive roleplayers (Temple, Barnes, & Cauley-Stein) in the rotation as I think we would have enough firepower with Collison, Lawson, Afflalo, Gay, & Cousins on offense. As long as we have two of those guys out there at all times, I think we will be okay on offense.

It's hard to bench McLemore after his hot shooting start, but the fact remains that we have Afflalo, Temple, Gay, & Barnes who will also be getting minutes at SG/SF. Not to mention, we'll probably play one of our PGs at SG for a handful of minutes each game. One of Afflalo, Temple, Gay, Barnes, & McLemore is going to going to be the odd man out. Gay is out of the question, Afflalo's too talented (with his defense looking resurrected), Barnes is a Joerger guy and looks like he'll help this team a lot this year. It comes down to Temple (the proven defender, ball handler, & passer who's a consistent, steady vet) or McLemore (the inconsistent player who is an athlete with a better shot from range). I'm going to let the next 7 games decide which one I'd prefer to get these minutes as I've come to learn not to trust McLemore's glimpses. They seem to be far and few between. Here's to hoping that changes, but for now, I'm going to prioritize the superb defender who we know will give us consistent minutes.

I hate to freeze out Casspi, but I think in the end, Barnes is going to help us win more this year.

I also did not like how the team looked with Cousins & Koufos next to each other. I don't think that's a very good fit and will prove to be an ineffective pairing this year. Koufos doesn't really provide anything different than what Cousins gives us on defense. I'd rather see those minutes go to Cauley-Stein (who looked pretty strong in the post holding his own against Len) who's athleticism gives us a change of pace and ability to matchup across different teams.

In the starting lineup, I'd rather go with a low usage, savvy, 3pt shooting, decent defender in Tolliver next to Cousins who will hopefully help limit Cousins on the perimeter defending while providing even more spacing for Cousins on the opposite end (Collison, Afflalo, Gay, & Tolliver would be great spacing). If Cauley-Stein's jumper continues to progress, you have to throw him in the starting lineup, but with how Joerger has us playing team defense, I would tend to think Tolliver's spacing is a little more valuable to us in that starting unit.

That's probably because some college kid IS running it.

Some tone-deaf, perspective-less, classless college kid (mentally at the least).
Trash talk is not something the Sacramento Kings should be participating in at ALL until they put way more W's up and stop embarrassing themselves.

6 minutes into watching the game and it's already clear how ineffective Kosta and Cousins are together. PF is just too quick in today's game to expect Cousins to guard the position. And there's really nothing gained on offense.. Kosta just clogs the lane for DeMarcus, Rudy and Afflalo

Maybe clearing Kosta out is the solution to the minutes problem? Basically just run 2 real bigs with WCS and Cousins and let Barnes/Casspi play small-ball PF.
