Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Team close but no cigar strikes again. This time we even had the perfect shot for the perfect player to take the shot at the buzzer...but no, of course not. Been going on for years around here. The positive in all this is that you get the distinct impression that as the opponents get weak here in the next month or two, Cuz comes back healthy, maybe jut maybe the gerbil finds another piece to help before the deadline...we're close enough it could turn. But learning how to win tight games is a great fuzzy area.

Note: Should probably note that some of that fuzzy area is not having your PG putting up nightly Iverson statlines (26 shots, 5ast woot!), not signing 6'8ish 30yr old PFs with no chance to defend big guys inside to 4 year contracts, and not hopping around like loons in excitement about the opportunity to draft rookie SGs who can't shoot.

Gay ( B- ) -- (Ed Note: Note I bumped this grade up from Cappy's original to bring it in line with the other grades submitted, but the text is his. He wasn't a happy camper. :)) I'm dreading giving a grade to Rudy in this game. If you look at the boxscore, it tells you that he had an all-around solid game. And I won't quibble with the rebounds and the assists - Rudy was hitting the boards solidly and passing the ball very well (though that dropped off in the fourth quarter). But the shooting is a bit deceptive. Sure, he hit 9 of 18 on the night just like it says, but as much as Rudy was on fire in the first three quarters (9-13 for 22 points) he was just plain ice cold in the fourth when we needed him most. He went 0-5 (on a few questionable shots) and missed one of two free throws in the final frame, and after an already dismal quarter he got one-on-one coverage from Diaw on the baseline and pulled up high for a game-winning jumper (this one a very nice shot) that just came up short. If you noticed that Gay had five steals on the night, you'd be lulled into believing he had a great defensive night. You couldn't be more wrong. Of those five "steals", Rudy really came up with three. Three steals are three steals, but they aren't five. The other two were loose balls that he didn't knock loose, that just happened to go straight to him. He did nothing special other than actually pick the ball up. And much of the rest of his defense was putrid. For instance, he just was not watching Belinelli at all and allowed an easy cut to the basket to put the Spurs up 3 midway through the first. Then he did it AGAIN against Diaw, allowing a cut down the lane and a layup to let the Spurs within 1 late in the second. He inexplicably left Matt Bonner wide open early in the fourth quarter for an easy jumper, then immediately followed that up by not picking up Bonner in transition - so blatantly that Matt Bonner was able to drive to the hoop for a basket. Bonner hasn't been able to drive to the hoop since he was a sophomore in high school! Then, with about a minute left in a tied game and two seconds on the shot clock he played about ten feet off Tony Parker when he was switched over, allowing Parker to make a wide open three. Two seconds on the shot clock in a tied game and he couldn't be bothered to play defense! Needless to say, I'm irate at Rudy's lack of effort on the defensive end all night (20 points allowed on 12 shots) and when you look at his grade and compare it to the box score, remember that the boxscore doesn't show that he pretty much singlehandedly lost this game for us with lazy defense and terribl shooting in the fourth.--Capt.

Thompson ( B ) -- Jason played a pretty good game overall. Nothing spectacular, just solid. He managed to get through the first half with just one foul, and that's usually an indication that JT will contribute. He got off to a slow start by getting fouled the first time he touched the ball, but it was non shooting. On the next possession he took a 15 footer and missed. Gay helped prime the pump with a nice pass to JT at the basket and a layup. In one sequence, JT scored with a nice post move off the glass, and then blocked a shot at the other end of the floor. He went to the bench with 1:44 left in the first, and returned with 6:19 left in the second. After picking up his first foul guarding Duncan, he missed a 16 foot jumper. He then missed a layup, but was fouled and made both freethrows. Then came what was probably his Kodac play of the night. He threw down a spectacular dunk off a feed from McLemore. The second half was less eventful, but he did have another nice block, and he played good defense on Duncan. He got called for a technical that I thought was undeserved. Probably a good chance it gets overturned by the league office. JT only had 7 boards for the night, so no double/double. All in all, a pretty good game.--Baja

Gray ( B ) -- battling with Duncan in the early going, and outside of one ugly little sweeping hook thing when IT gave it to him to go 1 on 1 v Duncan, he was doing his job. Was on the glass, and came as close as anybody to slowing Duncan down. Fouls and inherent limitations would limit his minutes, but would take what he was doing out there against Duncan 100 times out of a 100 over Carl Landry trying to slow him. Was back for the start of the third, and until he picked up his 4th foul and was forgotten about for the rest of the night, played a strong active third quarter for us. Got a good offensive reb in the early 3rd over Duncan, and did a good job staying big defending the break, and stopped recently back in the NBA Shannon Brown. Added another offensive board and racked up 9 rebs in just 14+min of action, and it helped us as we again threatened to knock off one of the old Texas giants. Wasn't all perfect, his limitations were still there. Got beat off the dribble by Duncan in a slow motion version of the IT/Parker matchup, and fouled him for the +1. Traveled on another post attempt against Duncan, this one set up by a nice pass by Gay. Eventually picked up his 4th foul on a little touch foul and left the game with us up 5. We would eventually lose by 2, with his only time on the court in the 4th a single instance in the final seconds of being put in the game to grab a potential missed FT. And the general impression was we were better with him out there than not. --Brick

Thornton ( D ) -- This was a rough game for Marcus. Around this time last week it looked like Thornton was starting to break out of this season long slump he’s been in, and then Rudy Gay came back and he got squeezed out of the offense yet again. That’s about the best excuse I can make for Thornton. He isn’t getting the amount of shots he’s used to getting, but he doesn’t necessarily deserve them anyway. He was missing open jumpers. He was missing forced jumpers. And I still didn’t hate what I saw out of Thornton outside of the poor shooting. He had one tiny little stretch in the third quarter where he made back-to-back buckets that I had hoped would get him going, but nothing ever came of it. I thought he competed hard on defense (worth noting he never had to defend a real offensive threat) and he made a few nice passes that unfortunately only led to one assist. It was the kind of game Kings shooting guards have played all year. Little impact, barely noticeable on the court. --Mass

Iverson ( C+ ) -- okay, well last time I graded IT I thin he threw up 31 shots. This time it was only 26, so improvement and all that. I actually started taking notes noting which shot he was on. "And for his 22nd shot he..." They were long notes. Started the game missing again on a little flip in the lane, and then an open midranger, but that isn't the sort of thing likely to discourage the Hustlin' Huskey! No sirree! So after getting blown by by Parker on one end, he raced out the ohter way after Acy made the block block and got a quick hoop in the open court. Followed that by playing keepaway from his teammtes, but finishing the +1 in the paint. Got 9 shots up in the first, hit 3 flips and layups, missed the rest. Made a good defensive recovery and challenge on a Mills jumper, but just only looking for his own shots, getting into the midrange, and missing flips, or getting blocked at the rim, Finally got an easy layup on the break on a great Thornton pass, The after getting flat beat off the dribble by Parker finally got a jumper to fall on his 13th shot of the first half and that appeared to wake him up as Gay set him up for a long two with 5 secs to go in the half and he hit that one too to wrap up the half 5 of 14. But then shot over by Bellinelli for a three the other way. Started off the third cold again, and that had a pleasant effect because for a few minutes he actually quit gunning. Defense during the time was a mixed bag, as he was flat beat by Parker cleanly on half a dozen occasions, but also came up with a handful of good challenges. When beat didn't appear to be a major effort thing, just a Parker was better at offense (although not terribly effective) than IT is on defense thing. Finally broke his long self imposed 3-4 minute shooting exile with a tough +1 in the lane, and he was off shooting again with Gay out, and managed to get himself up to 22 FGA by the end of the third with a solid 9 shot lead over his closest competitor in Gay. Kept on trying to keep his dribble alive and force his own looks in the 4th (in the process picking up 0 4th quarter assists), but didn't gun up the shots until near the end of the game. Used a pick and missed a three at the 3min mark. Dribbled around until the 24 seciond clock was almost finished and forced a bricked 26 foot three over Tim Duncan at the 2min mark and his grade was in freefall. However these things are never as simple as all that, and in the final minute hit two big shots on a foot set three on a Rudy pass, and then a pullup off his own dribble on his 26th shot, and we were in a position to win it. I'm sure he'd tell you if you'd just let me take #27... 26pts on 26shots, raw productivity but my lord Isaiah...enough already. Got the + for the two late shots.--Brick

Acy ( B ) -- as soon as he came in Diaw immediately took him in the post and went over him. But next time down the floor combined with JT on back to back bocks of Parker at the rim. More importantly, was on the glass from the beginning of this one -- soemthign often glassed over in the isn't Acy tough narrative is that he was has been rebounding like somebody who isn't. But tonight he did a nice job battling in there. Added a slick pass inside to Thornton that did not get rewarded when Thornton's shot was blocked. Forced a shot over Diaw and hit it for his only points at the close of the first. Back in late in the third and was twice denied inside in heavy traffic on back to back possessions. Missed another one at the rim in the early 4th, but hustled to save the rebound. Nonetheless was removed for more offensive personnel, and one interesting question is whether taking both the Toronto boarder s out (Acy and Gray combined for 19rebs in 28 min) may have hurt us down the stretch. --Brick

Williams ( B- ) -- Due to injuries, the Spurs look like the Kings of old - they simply don't have a SF. This caused Derrick Williams all sorts of trouble in the first because he was largely asked to guard SG Marco Belinelli. Derrick simply couldn't stay in front of Marco, getting beat off the dribble four times in his three-and-a-half minute stint in the first quarter, though that only directly resulted in two points. Derrick was definitely on his way to a F after the first. Surprisingly, the Spurs went away from that matchup for the remainder of the game, preferring to go with three bigs instead of three guards, making the Williams/Gay combo on the floor palatable for the Kings. After the first quarter, Williams actually had a really good defensive evening. He made two notable good plays, one to block Cory Joseph under the basket and another on a defensive switch to deny Tony Parker with under 20 seconds to go in the game, which would have resulted in a shot-clock violation had Thornton not been called for a questionable foul with under 1 second on the clock. Overall, the defensive results were really good for Williams, giving up only 3 points on 9 shots allowed. Offensively, Williams was mostly our fourth option, but he did get to the line eight times and made seven (once getting fouled on a three). But for all the good there was here, Williams only managed one rebound in the entire game (I would have credited him with three, but the Spurs scorer did not give him credit for two missed tip attempts, though that did help his FG%). For a guy playing 25 minutes at the 3/4, that's just not getting it done on the boards. But other than the rebounding and the first quarter, it was a pretty good outing. --Capt.

Landry ( D ) -- To be honest, I hate to give Landry a grade. He only played 13 minutes, and took 2 shots, missing both. One shot coming toward the end of the shot clock and somewhat rushed. He did manage 2 boards, but for the most part, he was just on the floor, and if you didn't see his number, you probably wouldn't have known he was out there. Some of it is due to rust, and some of it was not being included in the offense. He hardly touched the ball. His big play of the night was tying up Ayers for a jump ball and then losing the jump. Other than that, there's not much to say. --Baja

McLemore ( D+ ) -- Despite the lack of production I actually thought McLemore had a few good moments. He had one really nice full court drive in transition and finished with a clean lefty layup. It was a good-looking basketball play, and a good little reminder of his potential (he makes it very easy to forget). He actually made a number of drives to the basket, and it was nice to see him get to the rim even though he wasn’t finishing. I thought he was passing the ball pretty well (found JT inside multiple times), but it just wasn’t enough. I feel like I say this every time I have to grade the shooting guards, but the Kings need more out of them. It’s been empty stat line after empty stat line all year for the 2’s, and tonight was no different. --Mass

McCallum ( B ) -- in his first real stint as a rotation player was not spectacular but played solidly enough to argue he could handle it. Came in to start the 2nd, and backed too far off Mills letting him splash in a long ball. Being careful with the ball, neither creating (you'll note the 0 assists) nor turning the ball over. Made some good defensive stands on MIlls, but played a bit too far off him at times and got lucky he missed some shots. Hit a feet set three from the right side as Gay created for him and while he didn't always stop his man, and got caught trailing Parker on a cut as Duncan hit him for the layup, he was at least competing on that end. Came back in at the end of the third and played strong defense on Mills, recovering and challenging only to see Mill hit the jumper anyway. Then went the other way and pulled the Isaiah dribbling into a tough tough shot but hitting it at the 3rd quarter buzzer. Had another good defensive challenge to start the 4th but closed his minutes missing a shot in the lane, then geting beat back the other way by Mills for the three, as the Spurs caught all the way back up on his watch. In the end, the effort looked good, the focus on defense, but I still counted at least 10pts when he was just beat despite appearing to do everything right, so you can hardly call it a defensive stopper performance.--Brick

At the end of the half, when Gay had the ball, IT said something to him. I think he said, I want to take the last shot... But even though Gay is so good and could have done it himself, he did set him up for a shot which IT missed..

OK, we have seen Ray McCallum play 10 minutes of pretty good defense.

I'm ready to start Ray and send IT back to his bench role.

Good effort by the boys just came up short but, I can't fault the effort and effort has been in question for many years of the Kings losing.

#Biggest highlight for me was Razor Ray, while I somewhat question his playmaking (have not seen enough) his poise and a guy who gives his all on D (while having one of the bigger/stronger NBA PG bodies) I really like. The guy unlike Ben has zero fear and looks like he belongs from the opening second he steps onto the floor. He just looks like a natural basketball player if that makes sense he just plays no bs.
#Gay, the dude is unreal I thought he was going to hit the game winner tough luck
#D-Will got bailed out a couple times, made a couple bad plays and some good plays his defence on Tony Parker on the near last possession should have resulted in us getting the ball not a Thornton foul(bad foul). Could have done more with that tip in attempt as well but can't really be harsh on that.
#JT COSTLY tech foul, did ok his normal self
#Mclemore made two nice places but than proceeded to make 3-4 dumb ones
#IT.....to much dribbling, I don't mind him jacking opening/semi open 3's /2's but man taking about 1000 dribbles per possession is to much move the ball by passing please.
#Acy/Landry were average to below average

The fact that we compete every night, I just can't praise that enough. Compare that to the percentage of games that were sheer unwatchable last year. A lot of teams that will be in the playoffs can't make the same claim. Aside from maybe road games against thunder or pacers I expect the game to be interesting nightly to the mid fourth. That is not something you can often say about a team with the worst record in the conference

One of our good games. In the last of the game both teams played their tails off, both made some really great plays, both missed a lot of shots. We had the chance and didn't quite do it. Helluva game.

That last shot was actually a GOOD one. Haven't seen many of those around here recently. Was almost certain it was going in. Refreshing.

Can't believe he actually missed it. That was one of his bread and butter shots. Since joining the Kings, it seems he makes that most every time.

That shot would be even better imo when Cousins plays waiting for the tip in.

I recorded and watched later so I had no in game communication. How crazy did everybody go when IT. Dribbled up court, stopped and dribbled a bit, then dribbled to the baseline did a little circle then back out behind three point line. By this time he has ate 23 seconds off the clock with no pass, never looked to pass then heaved up a 35 footer as the buzzer goes off. I then looked at JT as he pumps his fist hard like a right hook and screams. DAMMIT.

I will say this folks. He didn't scream because he was mad IT missed. This has become common place. What is the average amount of times when IT comes down and never passes the ball? 15-20

Must be hard to play with Allen Iverson, especially when his talent level is a lot closer to 6th man than MVP.

IT takes 31% of the shots @ 42%. Has 5 ast as a pg
Gay takes 21% of the shots @ 50% has 6 ast as a SF

Fyi Thornton took 13% of the shots everybody else lower.

Rudy Gay is the 2nd best player on this team. When number 1 is out #2 should take over and shoot more than anybody. Not #3 at a lower percentage than #2.

I invite ANY Isaiah Thomas apologist to argue this point with me. If nothing else it will help me sort out who does and who doesn't have common sense. My 7 year old can do that math.

Is it that same play where either Grant or Jerry complimented IT for keeping the dribble alive for the kings..

that's just not realistic at this point.

Maybe next year. Maybe.

I just don't like IT starting and taking shots from Cousins, Gay and the rest of the starting five. I want the PG to set up the offense early in the shot clock. Then if the play/plays are not there he can free lance.

I'm hoping IT sticks with the Kings and wins multiple sixth man of the year awards while the Kings contend every year during Cousins career.

Probably. I had spurs broadcast. And let me say I get opposing announcers on news10 games and none of them are nearly as impressed with IT. As ours are or some fans here. At no point should a pg be called a volume shooter. That's ****ed up.

Hawks scored 120 tonight. Teague is much better than IT he took 15 shots. Parker tonight 18 shots John wall 18
Hell Kevin Durant only took 21 and he is MVP candidate taking on more load with Westbrook out and got 7 ast

I'm here to bash because its completely warranted at this point. Thomas sucks the life out of every other player on the court. Off the ball movement slows down when you know the guy bringing it up is not going to pass. At best he will if he stops dribble then he comes off screen calling for it back

no matter where one stands in the isaiah thomas debate, he is clearly a problematic component in the starting lineup. he's a chucker without a conscience who lacks the natural inclination to pass and the instincts to regularly involve his teammates, which doesn't fly so well when your team features two other high usage starters in demarcus cousins and rudy gay. given thomas' limitations and weaknesses on both sides of the ball, the pathway to success with IT as a starter is so restrictively conditional that PDA should be giving serious consideration to trading him before he's forced to overpay the kings' future sixth man. i simply cannot envision a realistic long term scenario in which IT remains the kings' starting PG...

I defended him the first game where DMC and Gay were gone because simply no one else on offense had anything going. Even with Gay back, now I realize, he just likes to jack shots up... he's way too inconsistent. He has the mentality that he HAS to score that hurts us. He's too much of a fan favorite.. everyone loves IT and loves making excuses for him, but if DMC does 1 thing wrong, everyone goes mad.

There's many times where I've watched the opposing team's broadcast. Most of them always nitpick about IT not sharing the ball and him dribbling it down, then taking a horrible shot..even when he makes it. That's pretty insulting, but it's true. IT is a volume shooter.. I hope the FO is looking for a starting PG..while moving IT to the bench..
