Corner turned?

Little sidenote here: at 6-10 we would actually only be half a game out of the #8 spot if we were in the East. As it is, we are 3 games back of our next opponent, Memphis, for the #8 spot, and have played the most road games in the Conference. Expecting playoffs would be nutty, but its certainly not too late to make a run if we can get it together.

Boxscore

Salmons ( C+ ) -- not involved early, which probably helped us, and that's not being snarky. Well...not entirely. Fact is that you could see that change in tone that has been evident for the last few games really setting in in this one, and to such a degree that John really got with the program too. Was pretty willing to pass around the perimeter, and was noticeably neither shooting nor stopping the ball. Finally hit a three in the late 3rd off a great ball movement sequence -- it was maybe John Salmons' first game as a willing roleplayer. Miracles never cease. Nonetheless, I could only go so high with a grade when the best things about the guy's game were the things he DIDN'T do, but he finally gave me something positive to grab hold of, when after scoring only 3pts on that one three pointer in his first 28 minutes he sudenly stepped up in crunchtime and came up with two huge jumpers to tie the game up at the 1:30 mark (the first one was called, not sure about the second). Thus the description of 7pts (3-7FG) 1reb 2ast in 30 minutes instead of pathetic becomes a willing roleplayer who hit a couple of big shots to help us come back and clinch the win.

Thompson ( B ) -- well, back to the wild fugly thing in the early going, with balls bouncing off his hands, blown layups, you knwo the drill. But you know what? That was ok because he was busting his behind out there as a hustle and glue guy, getting open for guys to drop him passes, and again displaying the superiority of having roleplayers playing next to your stars as opposed to competing gunners. Be an interesting little test after the failures this ummer if Geoff is going to recognize that this summer when JT is a restricted free agent. Slowed down after the big tone setting first quarter burst, but had several later game highlights including at an important point coming up with a sweeping hook across the lane in the mid third against Duncan, and being part of one of the smart simple plays we are finally making, when Reke coudl nto get an angle to hit Cousins in the post, so he quickly swung it to Jason up top near the FT stripe and Jason fired the pass into Cousins from the new angle before the defense could adjust. That's good veteran basketball. Finally hit some FTs as well.

Cousins ( B+ ) -- off to a strong start in every way to this one, including a couple of sweet open court drop off passes as our big man ran the breaks he was creating with those great hands on defense. Unfortunately fell victim to the old foul problem, as he pciked up an unnnecessary nothing on Ducan early, and then a reach in a few minutes later. Was smartly subbed back in when Reke had to rest in the 2nd quarter to try to stablize a smallballing bench crew who never gave us much this time out. Great hands and antipation led to 3 first half steals, and 4 for the game. Made a mental error at the end of the first half picking up his 3rd foul, then arguing long enough he got a technical foul. In the third agian made a dumb decision trying to dribble in the open court vs. 3 Spurs and getting stripped. But he never let the misadventures build. He screwed up, then went right back to manhandling the Spurs frontline, inclduing a giant man's man rebound and finish late in the 4th which had the Spurs frontline guys bailing out of there like extras in a Godzilla movie. Be ncie if he could get a little more help form his guards however, as the longer the game went on, the more he had to go get the ball off the glass if he wanted to shoot. Still, 17pts 13rebs 4stls in only 27min, and that's not even his A game. I predict he's going to have a game at some point this year which is just going to be truly eye-popping.

Thornton ( B- ) -- off to a fast star as a scorer, but interspersed with some shots where he never even looked around he made some nice passes. And in the first while he, Cousins and Reke were all rolling the Spurs simply could not hang with us. Began misfiring as the half wore on though, and despite the nice win it was another game where he (1-6) and we (5-21) once again could not shoot threes. Forced a dumb shot and got the offensive foul call in he final couple of minutes of the half -- his third just a minute before Cousins got his. After going quiet for a long stretch, gave us a burst out in the open court in the late 3rd, but wasn't a factor in the 4th. Did not get a good look at his shot to try to ice it with less than 10 seconds to go, and we had to make one more defensive stadn to pull it out.

Evans ( A+ ) -- I just had to plus this. This was Reke as bigtime star stuff here. Beautiful passing again early as he was really directing things -- its a GREAT sign when your young point guard is walking the ball up fist in the air calling out plays. That's floor general stuff. Even when he didn't get the assist he was beginning passing sequences resulting in good shot after good shot for us. For good measure he also added several big power drives bouncing through traffic, was a major factor on the defensive glass, and was doing a real nice job on Parker on defense in the first half. Hit the buzzer beating three to close a great first quarter you wish he could just bottle. Was getting his hands on a lot of balls on defense again, and was using those beautiful spin moves on his drives to draw attention and set up teammates rather than himself -- taking full advantage whenever the Spurs sagged off him or snet extra men his way. Came up with some brilliant takes down the stretch of the half just turning it on after Thornton and Cousins got their third fouls leaving Reke to carry us. It was really a potent blend of the faux Rubio pasing focus of the last few games with his high scoring offense back on line. The 2nd half was not as good as the first, but there was still a lot of good in it Lost a bit of control of Parker, and I thought our smallballing threw him, and us, off as it took him off the ball, and off of Parker on defense. Suddenly went through a shaky patch from the stripe in the late 3rd, and in the 4th while our smallball and reserves weren't getting anything done the mix seemed to get a little shot rather than pass heavy. But came up with some huge rebounds late in the game that just are a great sign of a young player taking responsibility for the team and doing whatever it takes to win, and then he capped it by knocking down the game winning jumper with less than a minute to go. Good form, the Spurs were so scared of the drive they gave him 5 feet of space, so he just drained it and we won the game. More of this please.

Bench

Greene ( C ) -- off on his first three, but hit his second at a key point as we were starting to sputter. Not effective in a brief second half stint. Almost an incomplete as the first of our Bench Brickers of the night.

Hickson ( B- ) -- mixture of some great hustle plays very much in the spirit of the evening with some less than smart plays and shot choices that were not. In the early going came up with some very athletic o-boards and a hustle play out near the sidelines saving a ball by throwing it back over his head. Also saved a loose ball and beat the shotclock with a baseline drive and reverse layup. Missed a pair of FTs and took a few shots of the "I'm not quite getting this whole passing thing" type, and at times got pushed around on the defensive glass. But I was not unhappy with the overall effect because he again was hustling, and that makes up for a lot flaws.

Fredette ( D+ ) -- for a brief couple of minutes you saw a glimmer from Jimmer (TM) as he came in near the end of our early burst while everybody was going and Reke had the offense humming, and just as he seems to have absorbed and aomplified our struggles this season, he seemed to absorb and feed off of early confidence. Was moving decisively, hustling on defense, made a nice pass along the baseline, and stepped into an open three as a cherry on top of our run as the Kings bench jumped up. But then it came time to sub out Reke, the ball and respnsiblities shifted more towards Jimmer, and that confidence just bled away that quick and he was back to ineffective rookie aimlessly dribbling around, missing shots (including one flat out intimidated looking weak flip on the break when he appeared to suddenly have a post traumatic flashback to the the big, tall long armed monster men that have been haunting his nightmares and wanted no part of taking it in strong), and seeming to flinch everytime a defender attacked his dribble. Looked like that would be his only minutes of the game until he was abruptly given a chance in the mid 4th because Thomas could not hit the outside shot -- seemed a clear smallball coaching error by Smart in a close game as it should have been Cisco who was subbed in. And after a few minutes of ineffective play by Jimmer looking like he was just trying not to screw up, the Cisco move was in fact made just in time for the crunch minutes.

Garcia ( C- ) -- got off to a terrible start to this forcing back to back garbage shots and missing them. Cisco is now our version of a veteran leader, but he still to this day has bursts of I'm-a-dumbass-rookie in him. Finally out of a timeout that probably featured an interesting conversation with Smart, walked in for a layup, and got a steal inside. Was back in for the final minutes after Smart's Thomas/Fredette smallballing blew up in our faces, and grabbed one strong rebound, as he did the other night -- Cisco is one of the league's worst and wimpiest rebounders if you call him a SF, small, unathletic, and weak, but he has been showing here that when it matters he will go after them with vigor.

Thomas ( D+ ) -- brief ineffective first half stint paired with Jimmer in the +1 Mini Backcourt of Guaranteed Opponent Guard Glee as we lost ground. Was back in the 4th as Smart seemed to be making the classic error of coaching the last game over again today, going to a smallball backcourt taking the ball out of Reke's hands at a critical time, and then zoning up the Spurs when we had been beating them all game doing none of the above. Thomas brought the effort but was ineffective in any practical sense as his lack of shooting range was exploited. Repeatedly he was the man left open at the three point line in defensive rotation, and repeatedly he took that shot. Did not make a one, as he was 0-4 from the field, 0-4 from the three point stripe as he led our little guy bench quartet (Thomas. Jimmer, Cisco, Donte) in a dismal 3-16FG, 2-10 3pt performance. At least left on the right note as he created the deadball that saw him replaced by Jimmer when he hopped in front of Parker to take a charge. Nonetheless, can't grade here on pure effort or having a nice smile. In 13min tonight it was 0pts 0reb 0ast on 0-4 shooting and 4 fls. In other words: ouch.

They're certainly playing with more confidence and having fun. Chemistry is being built. Hopefully they can continue the momentum and get something going here.

As for grades, A for Tyreke please. Maybe A+, the only thing that would knock him down are a couple of defensive lapses in concentration and two missed FTs. They didn't matter in the end and Reke is showing that he could end up being a legitimate star.

Certainly has to be Salmons highest grade of the season. I won't mention the bad stuff tonight, but he did come up big a couple times and played his best game of the season so far!

Cousins can just do things that big men really shouldn't be able to do. That bounce pass to Thornton in the first quarter was very Webber-esque, there aren't many big men in the NBA who could pull that one off. It was a somewhat mixed bag from him tonight, but still a good/very good showing, and deserving of at least a B.

Thomas contribution wasn't as obvious tonight, but that kid will do anything it takes to win. Made a couple of heady plays, stripping Parker down the stretch and then taking the charge. Both helped us get back into it when the momentum was taking a serious turn for the worse.

Among all my other gripes...My biggest issue with Westphal (or as I liked to call him, Worstphail), was that he didnt do **** to develop any of our young players. Thats fine and dandy if you're a vet playoff team, but we are rebuilding...The future of the franchise lies in the improvement of our youngsters.

In his short time as HC, I'm already seeing strides in the improvement of Reke and Cousins (not to mention the entire team!).

If Smart continues to get Reke and Cousins to go beast mode on a regular basis, we're going to get a lot more Ws. Now its just up to GP to fill in the bench and get some more complimentary players going foward (yeah, I wont hold my breath).

Awesome win.

I see Smart doing a lot of teaching. Results from limited practices are starting to show, and he's up and directing constantly during the game. Like what I'm seeing.

Westy on the other hand, seemed content to just sit the entire game, and chalk the losses up to inexperience and lack of confidence. On top of it, I not only saw zero improvement under him from any of our young guys, but I saw regression across the table. Bringing him back this year was a HUGE mistake on the part of our FO.

57 Points on 46 shots, 27 rebounds, 13 assists, 5 steals from the big 3 tonight. We can't ask for much more production than that out of them. The shooting was awful again from the role players for the most part as they went 11-35 as a group. They're going to have to be able to produce much better than that if we want a shot at going anywhere this season

Great grades to Tyreke and Cousins tonight. The spurs looked lost against them at times. When Tyreke's shot is falling, he is unstoppable.

Thornton, a mixed bag. That selfish gene is a problem, but hit some shots and made some tough lay-ins at key points.

Salmons saved the day. Cats and dogs living together. Mass hysteria.

JT, scrappy hard work.

JJ. Selfish midrange jumpshots. He hit a few good ones tonight, but a bleh effort.

Garcia had probably the most important rebound of the night. Not much time in the game today.

Thomas, crappy stat line, but the dude brings in so much energy that he forces the rest of the team to try harder. It's impossible not to like him.

Fredette hit a three to start then blew two layins. Managed to not look like a waste in his limited minutes. Visibly getting frozen out by his team. Anyone catch at the end of the game when everyone is jumping around hugging and high-fiving and he's standing around with his hand in the air for 30 seconds and no one except IT pays any attention at all. Hrmm.

Donte hit a big three early, and then missed a couple. He couldn't have been in for more than 4 or 5 minutes.

A+ for Tyreke, best game i have seen from him in a while. Like that he started just looking for his teammates and created the threat that he will pass, before he got his. Missed some open jumpers, but made the most important one, could have easily had his triple double. Salmons had his best game of the season, which isn't saying much, but it is what it is. Thornton looked less selfish than in past games. JT is just solid inside, not going to give you much offense, but he will hustle and scrap, and it looks like his cheap foul days are behind him (knock on wood). The bench gave is very little, but we were creating open jumpshots for shooters, they eventually have to start going down. Cousins is just a load inside, and his rebounding instincts on the offensive end are just world class. Once his post game fully develops and learns to defend without fouling, he could develop into our best player by a good margin. This team is just much better when they are pushing the ball down the opponents throats. Best win of the season by far.

There needs to be some more consistency among the bench, or else the starters will get gassed. This is a compressed season, and we need the kids coming off the bench to give some sort of meaningful contribution on a nightly basis - at least on the defensive end.

Speaking of which, that thread about us not retaining JT better be bull****. The dude has more than proved this season he can be an superb 3rd big off the bench and double-double guy as a starter.

I loved watching this game, but I thought we lucked out in the end. We went 1:1 hero ball twice to Salmons, once to Thorton, and once to Evans consecutively and went 3/4. They were all bad shots.

Still, they beat a quality opponent at home, so I'll take it, but damned if I didn't curse every moment Salmons was in the game, including after the huge baskets.

I actually just went back to watch this because you're not the first to mention it. There is absolutely nothing to speculate about unless you want to create an issue that isn't there. He comes onto the court and not one of the Kings players are facing him - they are all with their backs to him. They weren't ignoring him, they simply just didn't see him. The two guys that did see him, Thomas and Garcia, both high-fived him.

I can't believe I had to make a post about that. I'm not saying you're biased or have any hidden agendas because that would be unfair, but we had a new member make his first post about this non-incident. It's a very weird fascination that some appear to have.

It's not that we're not retaining - we'll match any offer - we're just not going to bid against ourselves to overpay. I really think the team needs to keep JT as well. He's a perfect complementary player to the rest of this roster.

Second straight great defensive performance. I'm not sure if this team will ever be a great offensive unit until some personal issues are addressed, but we are making progress. I think there's a identity in place now that could lead to a competitive season.

Speaking of which, that thread about us not retaining JT better be bull****. The dude has more than proved this season he can be an superb 3rd big off the bench and double-double guy as a starter.

The contract wasnt extended, I imagine the FO is going to wait out the season to see which of JJ or JT to offer a deal to as they are both going to be FAs. However, my first reaction to that news was ANGER!!!!

JT is waaaay better for this team. Hopefully GP sees that. If we end up with JJ and not JT next year, I'll be at the forefront of the mob, with my torch and pitchfork.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Chuck comes back if JT loses his starting gig.

I'm a little worried about that myself given we have 4 bigs and a coach who likes to smallball. Somebody should be out of the main rotation. Frankly I would prefer Chuck to come in off the bench and JJ...I don't know, maybe a spot guy for those times when DeMarcus is in foul trouble and we need offense?

Jimmer has been iced out in the offense by others. I've seen it and I'm not sure what to make of it yet.

Easy answer: they want to win!

I feel bad for Jimmer, the dude has no confidence, you can see it. The team doesnt have confidence in him either. If he was hitting his shots, they would be passing to him. I forget who made the brilliant suggestion, but I think some D-league would do wonders for the guy. Get him that swagger back that we saw in the preseason.

I can see the team making strides. We need our role players to increase their FG%, especially from 3. Tyreke and Thornton still have a tendency to go one on one a bit. If Tyreke is going one on one I'd rather see him keep driving it aggressively, because he's shown at least a decent ability to find open guys when he does that, as opposed to settling for outside shots. If the shot is there within the flow of the offense then fine, he should take it. I also think the extended minutes + running is taking a toll on Evans, even though he seems to be in pretty good shape. You can see when he's shooting FTs that he's completely drenched in sweat and doesn't have his legs in his free throw shot.

I actually prefer the Thornton that we had last season, who seemed more aggressive attacking the rim and settled less for outside jumpshots, not to mention a more willing passer. His floater that he's added by the way, is awful, and should never ever be used. The only thing it's good for is giving him a sure offensive foul. His floater has no arc whatsoever, and I think he'd be better off just pulling up for a shot.

As for Coach Smart, I want to see Salmons and Hickson get less minutes. He also needs to stop trying to run the offense through Salmons, because it's just going to be a mid range fadeaway shot. We were lucky that he made 2 of these to tie the game, but it's not good offense and Salmons is not even close to being one of the players I'd give the ball to to create a shot 1 on 1. JT is playing very well and should be brought back into the game earlier. Hickson is a black hole on offense. If we're going to use him for outside shots I'd rather he take a step in because right now his baseline shots are almost at the 3 point line.

Garcia had a few wtf moments upon entering the game. Jimmer .... well it was nice watching him hit his first 3.

Less Salmons, better Jimmer, less Hickson, Tyreke and Thornton continuing to get used to moving the ball and we'll see great strides in our team. The best part is this is without Hayes and Cousins isn't playing anywhere near his potential. Once Cousins develops some proper post game and our backcourt get used to the offense we'll be in good shape. Bench needs to be improved though.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when Chuck comes back if JT loses his starting gig.

If roles become more solidified, a process that is finally starting to occur, it will be hard to keep Hayes off the floor. He is a role player and a perfect fit for this teams needs. One thing I think has been exposed is this teams ability to guard the pick and roll without him. Cousins is getting much better at it, but Hayes plays the pick and roll defensively better than most I've seen. Just knows exactly where to be to apply equal pressure help side and on the screen.

Hayes gets his starting spot back, JT first big off the bench. JJ can get Outlaw minutes for all I care. Dude is like a better rebounding, but more selfish/inefficient Landry...Not a good fit on this team.

Still think that the Omri for JJ trade was the only good thing GP did last summer, at least from a low risk/high reward standpoint...But its starting to look like a failed experiment.

I never liked the Hickson trade. JJ gets rebounds, but he gives up as many if not more rebounds. You may also notice how improved the Kings D is with Hickson seeing less minutes. JJ is a poor man's Blake Griffin. It's all athleticism and putbacks, but poor boxing out and defense.

Yeah, didn't read that post on the game thread before posting. It just struck me as an odd moment in a team celebration for a great win, and I admit that I am probably misreading the moment. The more telling moment was early in the game when Hickson turned and looked right at a wide open Jimmer and decided he would rather take a contested shot. He should be hearing about that one from the coaching staff on the plane ride.

Really, though, not trying to make it about Jimmer. The team mostly played very well. I was, frankly, expecting a 15 point loss tonight. The early running game killed San Antonio in the first quarter and a half. I think it scared Popovich into playing his young bench for a lot of minutes.

Two game winning streak!!!!! JT is playing great, that left hand is killing the opposing team right now because he never had it before.

Ya know, Nelsons lead assistant from his first warriors stint isn't a small ball guy and is one of the most successful coaches ever. Maybe Smart is just playing the guys who are playing the best right now.
