Saw the game in person and wow.

This teams defense is worse in person. Guards allow way too much penetration and every play seems like every player is out of position defensively. Not many contested shots by New Orleans. This team needs back court help ASAP, and if he can't shoot a lick, I'm fine with that.

Jason Thompson is a nice player on paper, but I actually can't wait for Landry to return. Thompson is nothing but a clutz on offense.

Imo other than transition and if DMC is not on the floor take away Rudy Gay's ability from dribbling the ball, either catch and shoot or post up he's takes awful shots of the bounce (sort of like bigger Jimmer) and for a while he was making but law of averages is going to get us eventually with those shots.

Malone said that we're a bad team (a couple of times) and that we need better players. Was very peeved that we gave up 36 points in the 4th quarter. Also mentioned how turnovers killed us, bringing up a play coming out of a timeout where we couldn't make a simple entry pass to the wing. Emphasized that it was out of a timeout, from our starting PG to starting SF.

Cousins frustrated with defense, saying guys have been making excuses, saying they can't do this because some other guy didn't do that etc. Said each player needs to stay in front of their man and just do their ****ing job.

Here is my thing.

Cousins is the flat out real deal. he is one of the league's brightest young stars. In a year or two he should be a Top 10 player. If we start winning he could start receiving MVP votes.

Accordingly, as long as Cousins is talking about defense and Malone is talking about anybody else but Cousins, I don't mind whatever comes of it. As long as those two are on the same page, I damn well want anybody and everybody else to fall in line. Rudy used to be somebody, I think he can be again. I can see the raw skills McLemore has. not sold on him, but see the potential. I think IT could be a great 6th man for somebody. Who knows about the starter. I don't think the cubbard is entirely bare, but so long as Cousins and Malone are on the same page, so long as that page is disgust at lack of effort and lack of defense etc. etc., I seriously don't care who is in the line of fire. Coach and superstar aligned, calling for defense to be played = that's the good stuff. Anybody who wants to get onboard is welcome. Anybody who doesn't...well nice knowing you. I don't get concerned about those sorts of post game bombs until and unless Cuz is firing at Malone or Malone is firing at Cuz.

at his own pace? yeah right even he's the starting SG, he hasn't improved yet what more if Evans was still on the team and #2 tell it to those guys that are wishing for Evans to comeback.

Most young players on good teams sit early, and Ben certainly is not ready to contribute consistently at the NBA level. He's a mess. He could benefit from sitting and being spotted in in favorable situations. And one of the beauties of Tyreke's game has always been his versatility. You could have a young SG behind him, and have multiple ways to shift minutes around in the future to make room if that SG blossomed. You obviously can't do that with a pure SG like Thornton etc. It would be a different situation if you were talking about bringing back Kevin Martin, who obviously duplicates Ben and plays exactly the same position.

Ok, I'm going to be up very late,/early with Christmassy stuff, and I decided one Christmas gift I should give is to type out a transcript of Malone's postgame interview, because it was a gem, and he was throwing out bombs:

http://www.news10.net/video/default.aspx?bctid=2967792418001
q: another game where...tonight it was Tyreke and Jrue just lived in the paint tonight. What can you do to start resolving that?
a: uh, i can't answer that. its a, uh, its the same problem every night. I guess we gotta get some better players who can contain the basketball because right now we can't.

q: turnovers, it seemed like you tried to get things going. turnovers was a problem they get 29pts off of those
a: yeah i mean 22 turnovers 29 points, you know ah...give up a 39pt 4th quarter...its...we're a bad basketball team, that's the bottom line. we're a bad basketball team right now.

q what did you see Tyreke and was able to make himself (question was faint)
a uh, got wherever he wanted to go. he gets 25pts 12assists, gets to the foul line at will, nobody can keep him in front of them, gets to the rim. uh, we can't defend wihtout fouling. I mean he's...if guys didn't think he was going to come into this arena and try to get off..they...I question their IQ. because he played here...and uh, he's going to come in here and try to show everybody that what we're missing. And he did.

q: was it consistently all game you saw you know guys just...playing them the way they were, did you see it falling apart in the 4th? Or was it pretty consistent overall.
a: no, we had some decent stretches tonghgt, you know, decent stretches. But you know everytime we tried to build a little bit of a lead we turned the ball over. We come out of a timeout in the 4th quarter, and we can't make an entry pass to the wing. We turn the ball out of a timeout, our starting point guard to our starting small forward. Rudy Gay has 7 tunrovers. DeMarcus has 4. Isaiah has 4, Marcus has 4....We're not that good where we can give teams 22 extra possessions I'll tell you that much. I don't know if we can beat them if we gave them zero extra possessions, but we give them 22 for 29 points...that's what happens.

q: overall rudy..was that overall one of the worst games he's had since being here, what do you attribute that too?
a: uh..I dunno know, maybe fatigue..played 4 games in 5 nights...a long flight home but I'm not a big excuse guy. He played bad. You know that's it. He had a bad game. And ah..he wasn't the only one. You know ah, you know we had a lot of guys that didn't play well tonight. and uh...to allow them to score 39 points...I can't get over that. That's like the Atlanta game. 39 points...you know how hard that is? You now how hard it is to give up 39 points in a quarter? That is embarrassing. I'm embarrassed. I dunno if anybody in that lockerrrom is embarrassed...but I'm embarrassed.

q: did you talk to them at all afterwards? i mean you obviously have a few days to kind of work with the guys...
a: yeah, well if we do the same thing against Miami...it'll be a 50pt 4th quarter. So...I can't control the turnovers. I can't make the passes for them. Uh that's..at some point these guys got to take responsibility. Plenty of times this season I put it on me, and I'll do that, but I tell you what...each guy in that lockerrrom has to start looking in the mirror, and owning up and taking responsibility for their play. And we don't have a lot of that right now. So...we'll continue to work, I'm going to continue to try to get the best out of this group, uh, there's a lot of season left, but my challenge to these guys is: who do we want to be? Are we just gonna be a team that wins once in a blue moon, and comes out here and puts on a performance like that...I don't know. So we'll see how we respond when we play against Miami on the 27th.

q: true that a team has to sort of hit rock bottom so to speak with a performance to start getting things turned around...can you even think of what more they have to go through?
a: no...how many times do you have to hit rock bottom? I mean look at our record. Uh, we've hit rock bottom four or five times now. So...maybe some of these guys are so used to losing they're accustomed to it. I'm not. I'm not used to losing. I'm used to being in the playoffs and being a competitive team that takes pride in its defense. And uh...right now we don't have a lot of guys that do that. So I'm not sure what their rock bottom is, but I hit my rock bottom about one week into the season.

Sounding like a guy beginning to wonder what he got himself into. :p

Coach Malone is awesome. I feel so bad for him though. You just have to hope that within the next year or two we assemble a group that can really execute under his system.

-Coach played Jimmer for the majority of the 4th over Isaiah. Absolutely ridiculous. Keith Smart esque

I usually would see it as a mistake as well, but the way Isaiah played in the second half and with Jimmer being solid, especially in the decision-making process (he basically gave Cuz the ball every time and spotted up, which is all he really needs to do), it didn't strike me as a mistake.

Well if Evans is still a King, how would Ben McLemore develop? Plus Evans is somewhat inconsistent and also injury-prone ,maybe he was just lucky in tonight's game.

hindsight being 20/20 and all, the recipe for success would've been: match Tyreke's offer sheet, draft MCW, get an SF that can shoot and defend (Dorell Wright was to be had for a pittance, for instance) and see if you can't get NOLA to still part with Robin Lopez. all of a sudden you have a team chock-full with decent to good defenders that Malone can actually use to implement his defensive schemes and you'd still be able to grind out some offense. I'd much rather watch that, than watch this team be humiliated on the defensive end every fricking game.

I watched that for the 5th time and loved it! He is right in saying we need new players and that some of these guys are used to losing!

The comment about not being able to make an enrty pass to the wing out of a timeout was gold!

you do realize evans would draw a ton of attention to himself and free up ben to shoot open shots right? evans did to us what he did to other teams. he causes the defense to collapse because who can really guard him one on one.

anyhow, this team is on track to lose dmc in a few years like the cavs lost lebron. lots of patchwork vets, trying to find a second option to place next to lebron. couldn't do it, he went to greener pastures.

I think it's safe to say that since the two trades the Kings have gotten worse defensively. I don't think there is the remotest possibility that the Kings miss Vasquez on D. But when it comes to Luc, Salmons, PPat, it looks like they got the worse end of the deal, at least when it comes to the defensive end of the floor. That said, there is bound to be short-term dysfunction with all the new guys incorporated into the team. I'd give it another month for it all to settle out.

My thoughts on the game.

-Defense was terrible as usual

-Rudy Gay being Rudy Gay

-Officiating was awful, just Awful. Worst ive seen all year. Cousins was getting assaulted, pelicans players were constantly holding and tripping our guys on lose balls with no call, Isaiah getting fouled and tripped all night. And the kings got called every time a NO player tripped on his own feet and also a few late whistles just because they missed the shot.

To your last point there. Most coaches are going to stick with a hot hand unless you have an All star waiting to get in. Every time I come on here you always bash Jimmer no matter what he did. Absolutely ridiculous..
We lost this game for 3 reasons .
We had a crapload of TO's.
We were terrible at the line.
Rudy Gay was bad and forcing.

Yeah.. I mean ok let's also not act like Tyreke doesn't have flaws in his game. But with good coaching (again I say, Monty Williams really isn't that much better than Keith Smart) who knows what we could have made of him? At the very least he'd have the defensive ability for Coach Malone to work with.

Basically what's annoying is that the new ownership promised one thing and one thing only for this season - significant defensive improvement. So far we do not look on track to reaching that goal, and Coach Malone's frustration shows it. We keep talking about culture change, and getting the right guys with the right attitudes. Well ... right now all that's left of last year's team is Thomas, Cousins, JT, Thornton, Outlaw and Jimmer. 3 of those guys haven't been getting regular minutes and are clearly not the main cause of our defensive problems. I also don't think JT is the problem. Cousins could be the problem, but there's no way we're getting rid of him. So that leaves IT ...

Bench

Stats: 13min 9pts (4-6, 1-2, 0-0) 2reb 2ast 1stl 0blk 0TO
Fredette ( B ) -- one of his better games o the season, but not really as a PG so much as just a spot shooter who's shot was finally on. Like IT got a drive in the early 2nd to finish high up over Davis, who's defense seemed more bark than bite this time out. Anticipated a pass and reached into the passing lane for a rare steal (was just his 7th steal of the season).

Sorry to call you out on a really minor, homer-ish type thing, but this isn't really accurate. It's like saying Jimmer hit a rare three (he only has 9 0n the season)... His per 36 steal average is exactly the same as IT's (1.7), and good for 3rd best on the active roster...

Merry Christmas!

JT is definitely a problem on defense. Half the time he's running around not guarding any one individual player, halfway between one man and the next; like a chicken with his head cut off or guarding his own personal zone. Sometimes it looks like he's trying to get out the way from the guy with the ball, not cut off the sideline, or heaven's forbid, take a charge. He's useless when he's guarding anybody further away from the basket than 15 feet.

I don't see any good defenders on this team. Not one. And certainly by replacing one guy you're not going to turn it around.

My vote is to start Q-Acy, instead of JT

You could do that against the Heat/Battier.

VERY few other teams around the league though. Acy is not even a rotation player for most teams. He's certainly not a starting PF for ANY team.

And P.S. actually against the Heat one of our main weapons/early tactics was precisely abusing Battier with JT so...

here's a link to a play by play breakdown of the 4th quarter by StR. please point me to where playing jimmer in the 4th was a bad move?

Wait wait... I can predict the answer. Because we let IT get cold! That's always the answer.... In fact, IT shouldn't get credited with the turnover out of the break, that one should be on Jimmer... But HereWeVivek has a point that it was a bit Keith Smart-esque to ride a hot hand in the fourth over his usual rotation pattern.

Personally, I am still OK with Tyreke leaving. That contract was just a bit too much in my opinion.

+2

He is not worth what the Pelicans are paying. He is a 1 trick pony offensively. Unfortunately for us last night, it is one trick we have no idea how to defend (there are many tricks we have no idea how to defend). We make all guards look like All-Stars. They all beat our guards and nobody is ever there to pick them up.

Tyreke is inconsistent overall. He can't hit a jumper consistently. He does not see the floor all that well. He gets hurt a lot. $13/year is just a bit too much.

I wish him well with the Pelicans.

Thanks for posting Malone 's post game interview. It says all the important things we could possibly add on this thread. He hopes the players are embarrassed as he is but the interesting part was that he didn't sound sue that they were. Think of the common thought process for are players, "I was no ace on defense tonight but I sure not as bad as (fill in the blank)". Where do you start?

Just the kinda coach this team needs right now. People around here need to start taking responsibility for their actions, bad or good...This is a common theme with teams in the situation we are in, which is the rebuilding stage. Players turn on players. Players turn on coaches. Coaches turn on players. Coaches turn on coaches. What Malone has done here is come in and say "Enough of this bullcrap name calling and finger pointing. Everyone here is at fault. I am at fault. You are at fault. We are a team. The Kings are a team. The Kings are not an individual. The Kings are at fault. The Kings, NOT A KING, but THE KINGS."

Frankly, I love this approach; I think it's phenomenal! And I think it is this approach that makes Michael Malone attractive to the head coaching position from the standpoint of Vivek and the rest of the ownership group...
