Well...we played a game. It wasn't a great game. It wasn't a terrible game. But we played a game. We stayed mostly in control of an outmatched team throughout, but we never looked inspired to really put it away. There wasn't much chance of anything going wrong, and in the end nothing did. On the other hand if something HAD gone wrong, we would have had nobody to blame but ourselves.

Starters

Gay ( B+ ) -- started the game gunning too much, think he was 3-8 in the first quarter alone. but he settled down, began to contribute in non-gunning ways, and even because a factor in our passing game, which is a rarity. Capped things by steeping back up offensively to close things out.

Cousins ( B+ ) -- first let's mention the wart: the rebounding. Man, its a concern now. One of the league's best boarders just isn't, and we're 1/9th of the way into the season. Also lost his focus once or twice. But for the most part, worked the Pels frontline, helped on Davis, and got big on both ends for the stretch run.

Featured Grade
Koufos ( C ) -- There's not really much to say about Koufos. He brings his lunch pail and goes to work. He scored 6 points, but his little hook shot suffered again. He missed several little chippy's from point blank range. As usual he he grabbed his share of boards, seven, and played very good defense in the post. Twice he bothered, or got a finger on a jumpshot. Most of his minutes came in the first half and I don't remember him touching the floor in the 4th quarter. Joerger probably thought that Willie could do a better job guarding Anthony Davis when Cousins was on the bench. Nothing spectacular, but another solid performance. --Baja

Afflalo ( B ) -- a solid game using his power as a post guard throughout, and then had the big 4pt play that may have sealed it down the stretch.

Lawson ( D ) -- responded to outlasting Farmar and facing an equally quick scrub by...doing nothing. Well once he outfought Davis for a rebound. But otherwise his offensive game has completely disappeared now, and a rusty and sloppy Darren Collison had to eat most of the minutes.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Barnes ( B ) -- gave us quickness, toughness, and a shot of energy off the bench that the starters just didn't have. Missed most of his threes, threw a couple more of his terrible idea passes, but got on the boards, challenged on D, and found a few people passing,

Cauley-Stein ( B- ) -- it was sloppy and foul filled, but finally for maybe the first time this year came out engaged and with energy, and at least tried. beat and had to foul several times by Davis, but he got some blocks, Collison helped him with some passes on rolls to the hoop, and finally looked the young sloppy prospect rather than scrub. Minutes held down by hacking.

Collison ( C+ ) -- not sure he scored at all in his first half stint, which combined with Lawson meant the PGs gave us nothing. Did help WCS however, and with Ty never getting ontrack, forced to play a key 2nd half role giving us spotty scoring. looked rusty though, and kept making mental mistakes, taking it into traffic, trying to force dribbles through impossible spaces etc.

Temple ( B- ) -- he comes in and his defense is just comforting after so many years of guys at his position getting lit up. But on the other end missed his threes, and all he took was his threes. Had a slick pass to Cuz, but mostly out there filling space and making sure no Pelican did anything nutty to make a game of it.

McLemore ( C+ ) -- back in the rotation against an overmatched opponent, and Ben wanted to justify it by being solid. Only took a few shots, had one notably nice play sneaking in for a tip amongst the tall timber. But also made a couple of completely headslapping unnecessary mistakes that ruined the impression.

This game felt to me like a team sleepwalking their way to an easy victory, but they could have won by 25 if they put any pressure at all on.

Bring on the damn lakers! Bring on .500!
I'm with you, bro, but we must be REALLY focused and play MUCH better to beat the Fakers this year.

They're as young and athletic as the Bucks who embarrassed us, and they've already beatten the Hawks, the Rockets and the Warriors!

Hell, they took Atlanta on the road, on the 2nd night of a b2b that closed a road trip! (Exactly like we did against Toronto)

Let's stay small & cautious so we may emerge great & victorious, shall we?

If the Kings (i.e. Cousins) keep playing this lazily, they won't be winning much this year.

They're quite fortunate that the Raptors went cold and the Pels are pretty bad, because once these opponents get hope and their shots start falling, a lazy Kings team will not be able to keep up.

Why do they think they're so damn good that they don't have to bust their butts every night?

Why don't they ever put their foot on the other team's throat and win going away?

We didn't play as bad as you make it to be. AD was in beast mode playing extended minutes

How is Cousins the bad guy here? Especially when the Kings won.

While the Pelicans have been bad all year they still seem to stay in games for uncomfortable stretches. I mean, they forced the Warriors to play their starters all night.

You guys really think we played bad? Besides a few brain dead reach ins by Cousins he played as good as he could on both sides of the ball

I think this guy is part of the trade cousins for scraps regime. What I saw was cousins beasting without having to play "pound-the-ball boogie"

My thought on watching this game was that the Kings are a team trying to figure it all out and the Pels are a team trying to figure out if they even exist.

But the Kings still tend to lose these trap games and they didn't. It was very un-Kangzy to win this so that's important.

Don't know what game some of you were watching, but I thought the Kings played hard tonight. Cousins seemed to be the exception, but he still played at an all-star level. Maybe WCS stole his mojo.

What do you expect from Cousins? Because honestly I'm impressed how well he tries to adapt to what Joerger wants from him. He is playing his best pick&roll defense ever. He is protecting the rim. He is constantly chasing smaller, quicker guys around. He is scoring efficiently and isn't forcing anything or doesn't try to simply will us to victory right now, but he tries to take a step back for the good of the team and let our role players get comfortable with each other and the offense. This will pay huge dividents down the stretch, when teams lock Cousins down. You know those games we lost by 20 point year in and year out, because our opponent figured out a way to render Cousins inefficient and nobody was able to run an offense? Well that's why you need roleplayers comfortable enough with the system to keep the team afloat.
Same goes for the rebouding. He isn't chasing every rebound anymore. On offense he is more focused on getting back, which in todays NBA is the best thing to do (hence why the OREB is going down) and on D he lets his guard gobble up a ton of rebounds.
Yes chasing smaller guys or quicker guys will lead to him being out of position for the board from time to time and he had a few mental breakdowns, where he was caught ball watching, but overall I really like how DMC handles his new role.
Rudy is playing on a level I never thought we would witness here in SAC.
And I'm officially in love with Garret Temple. :p

Let me add something else: I really liked what Joerger did with Willie today. Willie finally came out with some energy. But he was quickly getting into foul trouble. Instead of pulling him, destroying his confidence again, Joerger let him play it out, knowing he would trust his veterans in the end of the game anyway and if Willie fouled out, it would be no big deal. He gave Willie the opportunity to play through mistakes and to learn versus the prototypical modern day PF in AD.
I think Willie did ok. With AD it's always the same every possession - he catches the ball in the pick&roll with the defender rotating back to him, only to instantly blow by him for the floater or to shoot a jumper. Cousins can't handle that. He just can't. AD is way too explosive for our big guy. With AD being the role model for guys like Towns, Porzingis or even Embiid (honestly this guy is scary ) we need a defender quick enough to hedge and recover and still being able to stay in front of those guys and bother them with some length. Willie is physically able to do that and therefore has a key role for this team heading forward. We can't afford to once again let the potential of another pick go to waste.
Chances are, that we still regret not taking guys like Turner or Johnson in a few years, but if Joerger somehow grooms Willie into the big man version of Tony Allen or Marcus Smart, who we can sub in to guard the opposing best big on the perimeter and inside, we at least don't come out empty handed out of last years draft like we did with Jimmer f.e.

Well, I mean, in his rookie Willie was a productive player for us, which immediately means he's better than any of our draft picks since Boogie not named Isaiah. That probably says more about how bad we've been at drafting guys over the last five years than anything else.

I've come to the conclusion that Cousins has to put up 35, 15 and 5 for some people to think he gave his all....oh, and the Kings have to win the game too.

The guy has double and triple teams against him constantly and he still puts up numbers. He will never get the calls that AD gets because he's just too physical in the paint....refs would have to call fouls at an even higher rate.

Anyway, I'm very happy to see them at 4-5 at this point with all the roster changes, no DC, new head coach, playing some good defense, about only 30% of the offensive sets are in.....a lot to like here. People should enjoy it more.

Cousins played very well but his rebounding is a concern. Anyone know why he's not pulling down the boards?

WCS finally woke up. Some nifty moves in the post and Collison really helped him out a lot by feeding him inside. Undid the good by getting abused by AD but at least he was kind of even for the game instead of just being terrible.

Gay impressed me. Powered inside for his first 6 points or so and then went cold for a while. Played very efficient after that and stuffed the box score.

McLemore...you were doing a solid job....but what the hell were you thinking chasing that ball out of bounds?

I'd also like to add, we were once again screwed by league scheduling and injures/missing players at the beginning at the season again, we also have a better start than we did last season. We have been in every game sans the Bucks game for some strange reason and just got a quality lead guard back and are one game under .500. The offense will only get better as the season goes on, but the effort on defense seems to be consistent every night and if it isn't, then those players don't play. The only thing that worries me is Ty Lawson's play at this point, letting Omri dribble the ball and Matt Barnes 2 or 3 full court passes every game.

Wow. The ability of some people to find the dark lining to the silver cloud never ceases to amaze me.

lol I remember when the pelicans decided to let asik guard cousins one-on-one.

the result? BBQ chicken

A few years ago that would have been a tough task for Cousins. He's improved quite a bit and Asik isn't nearly as good as he used to be and we all saw what happened.

Thought it was kind of funny that they didn't really have Davis cover Cousins at all.

They never do.

Wasn't a dark lining, just an observation. If your team can seemingly sleepwalk to a steady 10 point win over anyone, that's a great thing and I'll take it ten times out of ten.

It's certainly something not a single Kings team from years prior could do.
