Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Season's Greetings!

And a little gift for you, like the one we gave the Nuggets tonight: Gift

(already tested it on a friend, and had it proclaimed "cutems")

Artest ( A ) -- briefly pondered the "-" to this A on the grounds that a) this was one of those games where the guy who carried you all game grew silent in the 4th when you needed him most; b) got three point happy, accounting for virtually all of his misses -- you are 8-9 from inside the stripe Ron! Take it inside!; and c) for the first time I can remember, Ron did not shut down Melo, and even got beat by him for a critical hoop in the midst of our final minute chokefest. However, Ron was really REALLY good for the great majority of the night, damn near put up a triple double, shot efficiently, had 4 steals which felt like more, and generally dominated play...until it really mattered. So this is one of those times where I am thinking full "A" regardless. Came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and scoring at will. Slowed somewhat when the Nuggets matched Najera agianst him but was still the best player on the court for most of the night. When we had died off in the third, it was Ron who stepped back up to reignite us, at least for a while, and he hit a big three at the end of the third to push it back to a 10pt lead. Had Melo under control early, but almost as much through persistence as any brilliance, Melo eventually took off. Top game from Ron, but could not close the deal.

Moore ( B- ) -- active defensively and had two blocks early, but ended up spending a lot of time on the bench in the first half as the Nuggets went smallball against us. Picked it up in the third, blocked Melo on the break, had a throw down, and of course an overblown look-at-me squeal afterward. Not much on the glass on a night we got pounded in there, and late in the game was getting beat and making mistakes inside -- missing shots, offensive fouls, going into the post thinking he's Kareem etc. Throwback game for Mikki defensively -- when he was very young he used to block shots occasionally. Otherwise a pot on average Mikki game -- 11pts 5rebs against nobody in particular (the Nuggets were wihtout either of their PFs, Nene or Kenyon, and it was smallball or Najera all night.

Miller ( B+ ) -- early passing, and scored solidly from all parts of the floor. Looked very comfrortable all night, and while Camby was causing a lot of problems for the rest of the Kings, Brad seemed to largely ignore him. Which is not to say Brad beat him -- indeed Camby was the better player tonight and messed us up with his shotblocking. But it is to say that Brad and Camby seemed ot be on two different courts for much of the night, with Brad operating pretty freely and rarely directly confronting Camby, and Camby doing the same on the other end. Was our #2 scorer, but unfortunately like our #1 scorer disappeared in the 4th quarter. And in Brad's particular case had the additional aggravating factor of being one of the primary two choke artists (Beno the other) in the final seconds when he stepped to the line for 2 FTs to put us back up three, and choked them both, thus setting up Kleiza's gamewining shot, and completeing our collapse.

Salmons ( C ) -- and if Brad looked comfortable all night, John looked exactly the opposite. Out of rhythm, out of sorts, out of comfort on his way to a 5-17 shooting performance. In the early going hit a three, but then started forcing some other things, including an attempt to lay it up right in Camby's face, which just doesn't work. A major problem again for John tonight, as big shotblockers have been disrupting his tot he rim game with some frequency of late. But had a closing burst at the end of the second quarter, where he scored 5 pts in about 10 seconds on back to back fast breaks to finish with a respectable half. And while he wasn't doing anythign truly remarkable on the other end, it must be noted that Iverson was sucking right back the other direction, and John was, if not shutting him down, ertainly staying in the area to make him uncomfortable. Continued to have problems going inside in the second half -- had a LOT of blocks against him this game -- and at the end of the game Iverson sparked and got loose just in time to win it for the Nuggets.

Beno ( C+ ) -- for much of this game, I felt like this was one of those Beno games where he wass solid beyond very modest numbers. Ran the team, made smart decisions, not much statistically, but he kept us organized, and like a good roleplayer, stayed out of the way fo the guys having strong games. Did a solid job impeding Iverson at times as well. And then all of a sudden int he last two minutes beno stepped up to be the hero once agin, hitting abig clutch shot at about the one minute mark that could have won it for us and following it up by drawing the foul off an inbounds play at about the 30 second mark, calmly stepping to the line, and icing...oh damn. And completely bleeping choking with the game on the line. Out 86% FT shooter bricks not one, but BOTH. And when Brad decided that anything you can do, I can do better, and threw in his own pair of chokes, the stage was set for us to blow the unblowable lead. As a aside note: even while complementing him on running the team et.c etc., you have to get more than 2 assists out of your starting PG.

Cisco ( C+ ) -- the last man in our shiny new 6-man rotation -- where are all those screaming voices about Adelman's 7-8 man now? Hit a wide open three soon after entering, which then unfortunately inspired him to fly into hyperactive gerbil mode and start racing around forcing things. Made a good play to close the first half, or at least benefitted from Camby making a dumb one, when he caught the ball and convinced Camby to parachute, allowing Cisoc to draw the foul and get to the line for a pair of FTs with. Got another open three courtesy of Ron in the early 4th, but then went right back to forciing, and missing, again and again. Made a hustle play down the stretch that helped, grabbing an offensive rebound in traffic and finishing. One of 7 rebounds on a night when we needed the rebounding boost, and when Cisco was often a PF type next to Ron as our forwards. Got three happy. Thing is that when the gerbil slows down, gets his feet set, lets somebody else hit him while he's, he hits threes at a high percentage pace. Had at least two of those tonight. But when he gets overexcited he forgets the basics and then you get a whole bunch of junk, tough misses etc. Thus it was tonight -- not a horrible effort. Did some things for us. Just unfortunately did a lot of things for the Nuggets too.

Douby ( C ) -- kind of funny because he finally listened to my urging and put up some modest numbers to actually give me soemthing to grade, and yet I did not feel terribly different about it than I usuallyy do with Quincy's games. Missed his first wide open three, later hit one from the corner, and added an awkward flip inside. Had some struggles getting the ball up the court, but no serious misadventures. Tried to matchup with Overson, and not a bad physical match, but did less well than others. Er...shrug. Like most fo the bench, in fact all of it outside of Cisco, minutes were very limited after the first half.

Hawes ( C- ) -- in the first halfd rushed an early postup opportunity against Najera, and then chucked up another clunker of a three. Got tempted into a bit of stupidity to start the 4th quarter, when the Nuggets made a point of blatantly ignoring him out at the three point line, and he obligingly chucked up yet another clunker. Apparently the three point stupidity is not going to end, never mind that he a 7 foot center with a theoretical post gmae (needs work) who is 1-10 for the season from 3pt land. Hey! Keep on chucking! In any case, then settled a bit and did a few things in his remianing minutes. Grabbed a good board, made a nice pass inside to Mikki. Not enough, and my annoyance at the fascination with the 3pt stripe knows no end, but somethign at least to salvage the grade.

Jones ( INC ) -- quiet first stint, although did save a basket by slapping it away from Najera after he had grabbed an offensive rebound and was looking for the putback. Was briefly back in the third, but quiet. And then had the unfortunateness to be the guy guarding, or I guess you should say not guarding, Linas Kleiza on the buzzer beating shot that finished us. not really sure he did anything wrong though. Its like the Horry shot years ago -- everybody SHOULD be crashing back to get the rebound -- you win if you get that rebound. But of course if you don't...

Reggie ( ) --

Artest didn't really shut down Melo because the Kings went zone for much of the night so Artest was rarely one on one with him. When he was, he won some and he lost some but was alright. How about an F for Kleiza? He has played too well against us for a while now.
