Don't Make Me Use The Bat
We do everything right making the comeback, and then collapse down the stretch. Blech.

On the positive side we lost. We lost = Theme night. Theme tonight, in honor of Darnell Jackson, is: Little Known Badasses

Official Box Score

Casspi ( D ) -- wow, this is quite the battle we've got raging for that starting SF spot. Omri and Donte appear to be having a race to the bottom -- he who sucks more, gets the prize. Omri was stronger than Donte in Game 1, and so popped up here in Game 2 as the starter. He promptly quick shot an airball to start, and missed open three after open three off of Reke kickouts. Finally got on the board scooping up a ball for a nice tough +1 finish. That started his best, and indeed only effective stretch of the game as he gained a little confidence and followed it with some more points. But otherwise, not a whole lot to write home about. Went 0-5 from 3pt land, didn't get on the boards this time with only 2, and badly lost the SF battle to the much maligned (although I have never been sure why) Travis Outlaw. Ended up sitting most of the late game out as Westphal rather frighteningly abandoned all his size and returned to his smallball roots with a mini frontline and 3 guard lineup, with Cisco filling in at SF and showing it was actually possible to hit wide open threes off of kickouts.
flatley28706_narrowweb_300x395_0.0.0.0x0.300x395.jpg

Michael Flatley -- Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Champion -- Yes you read that right. I'm thinking he might have been able to do a mean Ali shuffle.

Landry ( C ) -- repeatedly fumbling passes in the early going, quickly got in foul trouble without having accomplished anything. Started scoring in the third, but quickly picked up the 4th foul as well. However, Westphal made a decision at some point to bench all his size and run Landry despite the foul problems, and while he was hardly anything special offensively, he chipped in points here and there in the third, off of good feeds and an on and off jumper, and knocked down a big jumper just before the end of the third that finally gave us a 1pt lead. That was both the beginning and the end of anything special from Carl though, and his statline was as empty as a one dimesnional shooting guard's. 14pts 3rebs 0ast 0stl 0blk 4TO is right up there for me as about as worthless a line as you can put up. Had problems with Favors playing over him, and obviously no factor on the glass as we got creamed -- the connection between rebounding, size, and said size actually being on teh court apparently not cemented in Westphal's brain yet.
john%20cusack%20say%20anything.jpg

John Cusack -- 6th Degree Blackbelt in Kickboxing -- yes, if getting your *** kicked by Michael Flately would nto be humiliating enough, John Cusack could take you too. He began training with former world champion Benny "The Jet" Urquidez in preparation for his roel in "Say Anything" (pictured above -- yes somebody thought John Cusack would be a good fit playing a kickboxer) and 20 years of training later he could kick your *** and make you watch Must Love Dogs wiht one arm tied behind his back.

Cousins ( B- ) -- continues to impress and show that's he's not ready to truly dominate all at the same time. In a year or two though... Showed no fear at all against Lopez, and in fact we intentionally ran our offense right through DeMarcus on the block for the first 3-4 possessions. And he responded with a turn around J, a nice pass to Beno underneath, and a powerful charging drive for the dunk. But his hackprone defense was again his undoing, as Lopez was able to repeatedly bait him into "fouls" (in the NBA any maneuver whcih attempts to interfere with the offensive player scoring is bad for the game, and hence a foul), and of course DeMarcus picked up another with a late half *** attempt to take a charge on a break even though he was in good position to block the shot. After returning settled in and played a really solid game in the late first and early second. Was getting on the boards, being under control with his moves and drawing fouls + hitting the FTs. But he simply could not sustain because of the constant barrage of fouls, and was in and out, in and out. Briefly showed at the end of the game that he still wants the ball, when at 5:00 to go, we cleared it out set him up, and he went right in, took Lopez into the post, and scored over him. But just when I hoped we could use him again down there, with Lopez picking up his 5th foul himself adn having to be cautious on defense, DeMarcus fouled out after only 21 minutes of action. His hacking is actually pretty saavy -- because he can never stay on the floor for 30 minutes anyway, it lessens concerns about not being in shape limiting him. He's never on the floor long enough to get exhausted.

Jack Warden -- former nightclub bouncer, paratrooper with the 101st airbnorne --don't mess with dudes who fought in the Battle of the Bulge

Udrih ( C+ ) -- not involved in the early going as Cousins and Reke handled most of the time, and joined the team wide shooting brownout in the first half. Finally got one of his stop and pops to go late in the 2nd. Good steal and breakaway to begin the 3rd quarter, got fouled on a bit of a gift rather than getting the layup, then missed both FTs. Nice pass inside to Landry for his first assist. After returning in the late third, immediately got out on the break and dropped a nice pass through traffic to Jackson, which began his best streak of basketball on the night. Started the fourth with a nice long pullup and then a good double on Lopez. Still never could hti a longball though, and only shot 5-15 on the night.
Laetitia-Casta-picture-Z1G14442_b.jpg

Laetitia Casta -- Brown Belt in Judo -- and imagine me sneaking in a pretty girl? But a pretty girl who might be able to kick your behind, and I have no doubt at all make you like it. Well, if you're a guy.

Evans ( B- ) -- Reke's first game of the season and he was...ok. Quiet in the early going, whether it be just trying to fit in, a little rusty on reading the defense, or by design. Was doing a nice job drawing the defense -- as much as ever -- and kicking it, but amongst the starters absolutely nobody could knock down the resulting open Js. Landry's jumper was on and off, and Omri and Beno combined for 0-10 from 3pt land. Head threw in his own missed three, and finished with a gooseegg in 20+min, and basically until Cisco showed up to save the shooting day, Tyreke himself was pretty much our best shooter. Nonetheless his first points on the season were with a brilliant drive. After a long dry spell while he was attempting those drive and kicks, finally got his second shot on a play out of the timeout, and then followed that by hitting our first three as he picked up steam heading toward halftime. His impact was felt on back to back plays jsut before half that cut the NJ lead down to 8, and they wren't even successful plays individually. Missed back to back aggressive drives just before half, but all the attention he drew that caused those misses allowed Donte and then Jackson to slip in and get follow slams on the rebounds as we climbed back into the game. Finally found a drive and kick partner in Cisco after half, and repeatedly set him up for big corner threes. Came up with a brilliant up and under scoop down the stretch for our last true strike of the game before we collapsed. But maybe could have workd harder trying to contain Harris down the stretch, and was unable to come close on the needed layup attempt with us down 3 and 30 seconds to go. In fact his layups as a whole just frequently lacked that touch. And so a decent game, but no more than that. In fact the grade here reflects some of what could have been had anybody but Cisco been able to hit a damn jumper as much as what was. 18pts (8-19) 4rebs 7ast was what was. But that assist number should have been up over 10 had we quit throwing bricks at the backboard.
buffy_vampire_slayer.jpg

Sarah Michelle Gellar -- Blackbelt in Taewkondo -- this is actually probably not so little known given her rise to fame, and she was notoriously a brown belt by the end of her run in Buffy. So just darken it a few shades, oh and add in extra training in kickboxing, boxing and street fighting, and you too can get your butt kicked by a 5'4" (maybe) 110lb (maybe) blond. But hey, at least you can blame it on her superpowers.

Bench

Thompson ( D- ) -- a big ole ouch! Why can this man not sustain? This was the same guy people were raving about early in camp, and here we are once again with another ragged sloppy disapearing act to start the season. Got nothing done again, and in the first half picked up 0pts 0rebs 3fls and a technical. In fact the first half was bad enough that it again had Darnell Jackson ahead of him in the rotation in the third. Finally got a jumper to fall in the mid-3rd for his only points, grabbed all of 1 rebound on the ngiht, adn the box says he notched three assists -- go figure. With Jackson tiring and Cousins in foul trouble, got the assignment to guard Lopez in the 4th, and with a lot of double team help was doing a good job of keeping him away from the hoop -- basically in fact the whole reaosn he gets a D- here rather than the next grade down. Was still all he was doing right however. Missed an open gimme, got called for an illegal screen went and sat down and watched rookies and scubs who were not even sure to survive camp take the rest of his minutes. If you take Jackson as for real we've now got 6 NBA bigs vying for minutes. JT simply can't do this weaksauce stuff anymore or he's going to get passed up and buried on the bench. Two games into the season and its already time to get focused.
1257413611emmanuel_lewis%5B1%5D.jpg

Emmanuel Lewis -- black belts in Karate and Taekwondo -- yes that's right, after getting your manhood taken away by Michael Flatley and John Cusack slapping you around, you can complete your evening with a 4'3" buttwhooping from Webster himself.

Dalembert ( INC ) -- his first action of the year (and as a side note, I was surprised to hear that he wanted to go in Game 1 and we did not let him -- with a 354 game healthy streak on the line, couldn't we have just let him pop up for a few minutes two nights early?). Came in here in the mid first, and while it wasn't brilliant, flashed a little of what we can look forward to. Lopez scored over him on the first attempt, but then Daly stepped up and blocked Lopez's next two post moves in fun fashion. Alas that was it. Got no rebounds, and his first shot was a jumper that looked just like all the other jumpers we took in the first half. Never returned after half with Westphal giving some excuse about the game beight tight, hence he was forced to play smallball or something.
mbenga.jpg

DJ Mbenga -- Blackbelt judo -- I want you to consider what a very bad thing it could be for a 7-0" tall 260lb man to have a blackbelt. I'm just glad we didn't start a brawl with the Lakers last year.

Garcia ( A- ) -- finally a point of light. Missed his first three as even he could not help but be infected by the teamwide shooting sickness in the first half. But was the guy who finally hit a three on a Reke kickout in the mid third to get us within 3. Then hit a series of big clutch threes on kicks from Reke and Head in the 4th, carrying almost the entire shooting load right through crunchtime. Made multiple other clutch plays down the stretch as well. Strong double on Lopez resulted in a jump ball, and he then won the tip. Drew an offenisive foul. Missed the big challenged three we needed with 1:30 to go -- most important shot of all. Did come up with a clutch desperation three with 15 seconds to go to cut it down to 2, but not enough. 2-2 now on strong games for Cisco, and making shooting open jumpers look as easy as it should. Not sure what the problem is for the other guys.
Willie-Nelson.jpg

Willie Nelson -- Blackbelt Taekwondo -- that's right, after the rom com stars and pint sized former child actors finish mopping the floor with you, you can round out your humiliation with a whooping from a 77 year old country legend.

Head ( C- ) -- sigh. One game after Head's breakout performance so impressed our always impressionable coach that he said that he could now afford to start Casspi since Head would take care of our bench scoring , Luther comes back and puts up the great big 20 minute goose egg. He missed hsi only three early int eh game, forced one other jumper one on one, and that was the grand total of his offensive escapades. or at least hsi shooting escapades. Did make a nice open court play hustling to save a long rebound and then quickly spinning and throwing the ball ahead to Cisco for what should have been an assist (Cisco blew the layup), and in the early 4th made a nice Reke-esque drive and kick to Cisco for a three to put us up 5. So the floor game was better than the numbers, but 0pts is still 0pts, especially from your newly anointed 6th man/bench spark.
ElvisPresley.jpg

Elvis -- Blackbelt Chito-ryu (Karate) -- of course if you are going to get your *** kicked by an old singer, it might as well be Elvis. Of course him being dead for 30 years would make it kind of embarrassing, but still, its an honor to get pasted by The King.

Jackson ( A- ) -- in fairly early with the extreme foul trouble across our front line. Had to guard Lopez in fact after entering, and in the early going that wasn't a good thing. Did give us a distinct offensive life after entering however, showing aggressiveness and physicality that mysteriously seemed to be eluding many of our other bigs. Good play had him up ahead of JT in the rotation in the third, and as Westphal went incresingly to smallball, did a good job playing physical defense on Lopez and keeping him away from the hoop. Gave us good aggression inside in the third as we closed the gap. Nice quick dunk on the break from Beno late int he quarter, and was playing with with power and energy. Missing his Fts though. Common for our team. Some just over the top reliance on him so early though as not only was he there for the final 3:00 of crunchtime, but we actually went to him as a goto guy at the 2:30 mark out of the timeout and Lopez with 5 fouls. Did not work and...come on now. No idea what he was doing shooting a three with 6 seconds to go. Yes, we needed a three, but why was he out there while Omri was inside (not that Omri hit anything all night). Strong game by Jackson wihtout a doubt. Our best big. But two games into the season and I'm already worried about his influence over our head coaches notoriously wandering eye. One of Westphal's real weaknesses last year was a tendency to fall in love with guys he should not, from Mason to Udoka to Mays etc.
laura-schlessinger-n-word.jpg

Dr. Laura Schlessinger -- Blackbelt Karate -- or so at least she claims. Really is too bad given that many would agree that few Americans have been more desperately in need of an *** whooping for years now.

Greene ( INC ) -- so far out of favor so fast that he was completely out of the rotation (again) until foul trouble and incompetence had him show up as the 11th man late in the first half. Came up with a nice offensive rebound and follow dunk to get us back to 10 late in the half, and never played another minute so great were his crimes
vladimir_putin2.jpg

Vladimir Putin -- Blackbelt in Judo -- well maybe another not so secret badass given Putin's over the top alpha maleness practically drives him to clarify the pecking order by rubbing his crotch on people's faces by way of greeting. Well that, and the fact that he's actually written a book on Judo.

P.S. Refs = F. The first half reffing was just completely ridiculous, in all ways.

super lame... in other news... Hawes still sucks... so that may cheer some of you up seeing how he's not our problem anymore.... LOL!!!!

j/k j/k I wont keep bringing him up... its just my first time back in awhile

Until the Nets game, the Kings did not have this cast of characters all available at one time. Throw away the first quarter. Then in the 3rd we saw the Kings for what they are slowly becoming. But all night perimeter defense and the lack thereof vs. 3's was killing them. They allowed the NETS to shoot 53% for the night and get 6 of 11 3's. Missing 9 FT's didn't help either. Both are correctable. 1st Q "D", 2nd Q "C", 3rd Q "B+", first 9 min of 4th Q "A". Disappointing for sure but it is progress considering they are still training trying to get a rotation that works best. I liked the low TO's (12) and higher assists (21), a very good ratio. But their shooting for the most part was all over the grading scale. Fortunately that too is correctable with more playing time.

Your posts is getting very, very old. You say, "j/k, j/k I won't bring him up", but the first post back you do. Enough. Hawes is no longer on the team.

Darnell had a good game. Carl had an o.k. game, Tyreke's jumper still looks the same from last year, and JT...nuff' said.

I thought the kings did pretty well. Dalembert was a beast in his short time playing. Tyreke getting better at playmaking. I can only see us getting a lot better from here on out.

SERIOUSLY?!
Still cant rebound, coach still doesnt know his lineups (darnell woopin jackson with 22 minutes) sigh...

Guys don't rush to judge the team. They did a lot of good things tonight when they came back. It's going to take a bit of time until the gel a bit. We saw glimpses from a lot of guys, and remember it's on the road.. No worries.

It was fustrating, no doubt. But if Cisco's 3 doesn't go half way down and pop out, and Landry hits one of the 2 jumpers that rattled out, it's a 1 point game, without Cousins or Dally being able to contribute in the 2nd half. We had a chance to win, on the road, with big guys in foul trouble/injured, after a horrible start, against NJ in their home opener. Not worried at all. wouldn't be surprised in the least if we won tomorrow, and go home 2-1. Cle lost to Tor tonight by 20.

And I don't want to make excuses, but the refs were horrible tonight, for both teams, and pretty much help kill any momentum either team generated. Took our bigs right out of the game less than 5 minutes in. And Darnell is a freaking beast. What a steal if he can play like this consistently. I had no idea he was this versatile offensively. The energy and eating up rebounds aren't as surprising, but on offense he's hitting open jumpers, getting dunks runnig the floor, in traffic, finishing most putback opportunites, and doesn't mak any poor decisions at all. No bad shots. No offensive fouls. No turnovers. I can't believe someone who is that physical and plays with that much energy and is that active, is always playing within himself at the same time. At least so far. Impressive.

Didnt see the game, living down here in Lakerland, but over in the game thread people were saying good things about Jackson. If the dude is outplaying our better bigs, give him minutes. It's not like he's a greybeard (isnt he 26ish?), apparently he plays hard and Ds up.

Our team's rebounding tonight was pretty disappointing though. Landry is back to his no rebounding roots after a good opener, but I was most disapponted in JT and Cousins' effort on the glass. Those are supposed to be our rebounders.

Yah forgot about the refs.. Really can't blame the Kings for lack of production with a game constantly being stopped due to fouls.

Darnell had a good game and was getting Tyreke penetration by setting solid picks at the top of the key. It took awhile, but eventually NJ adjusted and the Kings did not.

If Cisco hits that corner three, this game ends differently. That and Reke's blown layup were missed shots that had been makes. On the other end, Harris hits back to back jumpers and its game.

The most frustrating thing to come out of this was the realization that Westphal is still playing mind games through his rotations. They'd played a single game up to tonight, yet he's already jerking Donte's minutes (and role) around once again because of one subpar outing. Why is he so afraid to carve out definite roles for his players and letting them settle and adapt to them?

Give Donte at least a week to settle into his starting role and Casspi time to acclimate to his role as a main scorer off the bench. Changing this team's landscape on such an erratic basis and operating on a "what have you done for me lately" approach with the rotation is the worst decision you can make when it comes developing a young team. Give these guys time to gel with their respective units (Donte with the starters, Casspi with the bench) and everyone will be in much better position to succeed.

tl;dr -- Calm the hell down, Westphal.

Did you even watch the game? He was pulling down huge rebounds, and playing D very well. Hit a nice jumper too. He was part of the reason we came back in the game so I say go with the hot hand.

just because darnell is a no-name, doesn't mean he is automatically **** when he plays

The guy played his heart out and was actually one of the few players who played well tonight. Hustled, made key plays, etc.

I wouldnt even care if he had like gazillion rebounds and was a lockdown defender against the nets (rolf) He isnt gonna be a longtime part of the team by any stretch so...

How do you know? If he helps the team then he should play...it's not like he's a 38 year old vet taking minutes from anyone. Looks like he can be a solid big off the bench especially when other bigs aren't doing it one night or another.

Problem is we really don't have minutes for a 6th big. If Jackson is suddenly going to appear in our rotation, something has got to give.

I thought I saw some positives in the comeback. But our shooting has really sucked coming out of the gate. Maybe some home cooking will make those shots go down. I know back to back games are not going to be a lot of help on the road. The officials in the first half must have been laughing at themselves when they reviewed the gametape at the half. They were really that bad. And all this New Unsportsman like rule does is keep the players from showing their disgust over bad officiating which is the REAL problem. Why doesn't Stern do something about THAT!
