Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Peja ( A+ ) -- Could be absolutely no question at all about this one -- tonight Peja put aside the weenie shooter routine and gave a true superstar performance. Exploded out of the gate with what may have been one of the finer first quarters of his entire NBA career. Not just scoring, but *gasp* grabbing loose rebounds. Was slowed in the early second by foul trouble and fatigue, but returned after a spell on the bench to again dominate offensive action for us. Best half of the season that eventually turned into his best game of the season. Huge key for Peja was that not only was his shot ridiculously on tonight, but he got to the foul line in true superstar fashion -- 14-14. Career high? In the first half the Mavs did at least find a player -- Keith Van Horn -- who could score on Peja as often as Peja was scoring on the other end, but in the second half Peja kept on scoring while the Mavs kept on playing traditional Mavericks defense on him. And nether Van Horn nor any other Mav not named Dirk had any impact at all. Did not disappear in the 4th quarter (although he did make a dubious decision to chuck up a 30 footer with about a minute to go that was effectively a turnover). While he didn't grab many boards after the initial burst, came up with a big one to help seal it in the final seconds.
Thomas ( B ) -- got off to a rough start against Dirk, who wasn't scoring much but was drawing fouls on the Kings frontcourt. And on defense struggled against Dirk badly enough that we actually had to hide him away in the second half. Woke up in the second quarter and hit 3 straight jumpers, but then got HAMMERED by Dirk Nowitzki of all people on a breakaway. Went away for a long time after that, and basically took himself out of the game on a couple of not-smart fouls on Dirk in the mid-third (the first of which was called a flagrant, although really it wasn't). But stepped up and played well down the stretch -- again the key to his contribution was the 18ft standstill jumper, which he can hit all night. Tonight if he moved, he missed. But when given a little room and an opportunity to set his feet, he hit 5 or 6 of those little jumpers in a row. By the end, had worked himself into a solid game despite the defensive struggles, and may have matched Dirk offensively in the final quarter.
Skinner ( B- ) -- not as effective early as he has been in the past, but did contribute a big early block on the 7'6" Shawn Bradley. Went on to get his numbers in the game, but got them in pretty quiet fashion and was never a significant factor in this one.
Mobley ( B- ) -- played wingman to Peja in the first quarter, as two of our softer players not only scored but contributed in the hustle departments -- both on the glass, and in Mobley's case with steals and a block as well. Was quiet after he returned in the second, and never really did get his offense going. But thought he did a nice job in the other areas with hustle, some boardwork, blocks and steals, and in general a pretty complete floorgame.
Bibby ( C+ ) -- Hard game to grade simply because I didn't think he played very well, but he did direct an offense that scored 109pts (albeit largely due to Peja's hot shooting). Very quiet first half -- barely knew he was out there. Began to sputter to life in the third with a couple of three point hits mixed in with a variety of bricks, and gave us a few more points in the 4th. But in general it was a struggling 17pts tonight. On the other end of the court Jason Terry was just terrible. Would like to attribute that to Mike, but no, think he just stunk it up and Devin Harris proved to be a pain again off the bench.
Songaila ( B ) -- started out looking very much like a sore basketball player out there. Had an ineffective first half, and wasn't moving very smoothly. But came back in the second half to play an important role for us. Never much offensively, but grabbed some boards, and critically provided by far the best defense on Dirk tonight down the stretch of the game.
Williamson ( C- ) -- struggled on offense during the first half. Competed with Dirk on the other end of the floor, with decidedly mixed results. Enough of a struggle that Rick went away from him in the second half.
Evans ( C+ ) -- not terribly effective in his stints and not able to dominate action with his athleticism and energy. Really kind of placeholder minutes until Cat could return.
House ( B+ ) -- another very nice backup stint for Eddie in the first half...that somehow again failed to translate into any minutes in the second half.

Adelman ( B+ ) -- very encouraging game against a possible first round opponent, and actually the reason that the Mavs remain the team I would most like to see in the first round. The enemy we know and have always been able to beat. Important game as well, since every single one of our playoff positioning rivals also won tonight (Seattle, Houston, Memphis, Denver) -- well, every one except the Mavs of course. :p The Mavs were really a one man team tonight (and so were we actually) -- Van Horn and Harris had stretches of effectiveness, but it was Dirk, Dirk, and more Dirk. And really the crux of the issue tonight for Rick was simply finding someone, anyone who could slow him down. It took 3 quarters, and about 4 different players, but Rick finally found an adequate solution with Darius in the 4th. Didn't lock him up, but made it hard on the big German, which was all that was needed with us scoring at will against the Mavs "defense". The bench was not used extensively again, but Darius was a key contributor late, and it was enough. And so a good win over a good opponent (still not going with the sudden elevation of the Mavs to "elite" status -- they are what they have always been). Now if we can just convince Peja to play like a superstar on a nightly basis, we're in good shape.

P.S. I do have to ask one question -- exactly how many layups did the Mavs blow tonight? Goodness. Looked like us out there.

That was a pretty good win considering Bibby was a bit subdued. PEja with six rebounds in the first quarter. Wow!

I was amazed that there was no retribution against Dirk. We have a very mature bunch of guys.

Great game by the Kings and grades were fair once again.

Peja was a STUD tonight!! Too bad he didn't get a double double....yeah asking too much there. LOL

As for Dirt, someone should punch his mouth so we could get his second denture. Didn't realize how aggressive and somewhat dirty he could be at times. Great play by KT and the Kings for holding their composure.

Team grade: A-

That was KINGS basketball, with a few lapses. As long as they moved the ball and spread the offense, we did great. I think my favorite play was towards the end of the first quarter. Darius got a rebound and got the pass to Bibby. Cat and Peja sprinted for the corners as Bibby brought the ball upcourt. The Mavs were clearly up a creek - they covered the two corners, leaving Bibby with a nice open path right down the middle for the easy lay-up.

I think we'll see that more and more often, and I think it will pay HUGE dividends as both Cat and Peja seem to love those corner shots!

If Dirk is trying to shed the "soft" label: Try Again.

There's a difference of you being "Punk'd"(check MTV this Sunday for that) and you acting like a punk. It's not just this game with the hard foul, it really has been all this month. Just the game this before him and Jason Richardson almost went into it.

Just because you got a haircut, it's not gonna make you any tougher.

I am hoping that for kenny thomas' sake that the nba reviews his flagrant foul and does not fine him.

Dirks flagrant could end up costing him a 1 game suspension.

I give the Kings an A+ for fighting through the horrible strecth of calls and playing hardnosed defense in the 2nd half!

The offense was not on tonight like it could be and the D in the 2nd quarter was lacking, but they really did a nice job swarming to the ball in the 2nd half!

I would give Bibby a B. shot reasonably well, good assists, and had only 1 turnover which was late in the game.

Great Win, Great Grades. I know it's typical to complain about refs only during a loss, but...

Referees: F

lousy job tonight. A lot of "anticipation" calls, like that Bibby steal that was called a kick ball, or the Thomas foul that was called a flagrant.

Agree with everything you said.

One more thing, luckily he didn't hit any child on the face when he smacked the ball to the crowd.

Oh yeah, when he committed that hard foul on KT, knowing he was on the floor. Yet he didn't even bother to see if he was okay, if his intention was to not hurt him in any way.

Yeah, thank God no one was hurt when Dirk volleyball that ball to the crowd. Good point of Dirk not checking Thomas. I don't know what's up with Dirk. He needs to relax more.

Great game by our guys!!! I'm so proud of them. Team Grade: A+!

43 points in the 2nd half. They started to play D. Refs called a horrible game. But tried to save themselves in the 4th Qtr. I'm glad our guys didn't overreact with all that was happening.

Player of the Game: Pedja...he deserve the A+!!! Great game, Pedja!! :)

GO KINGS!!!!

From espn.com recap:

"That was a joke," Nowitzki said. "Obviously I fouled him, but just because he falls into the stands doesn't make it a flagrant. It was a tough night for the officials, but we still should have won the game."

about darius defending dirk- i think ra wanted to go that route earlier, but the first time he came in dirk came out a second later- didnt have a chance to defend him. darius got pulled before dirk came back, and the same thing happened the second time darius came back. maybe he should have been played earlier, but sometimes thats just the way it goes. also, the mavs may have realized darius matches up best with dirk and decided to rest him while d was on the floor

You keep thinkin' that, FNB, if it makes you feel better. Kings still got the W.

What a tool...

Any respect I once had for Dirk Nowitzki has gone out the window with his recent personality transformation into a Cuban clone.

I would absolutely loved to have seen him get his clock cleaned, although I have to grudgingly admit that Adelman did the right thing. I would have sent Tag in just long enough to ...

Well, I'll just remind you that Tag played for years under Jerry Sloan and let your imagination fill in the gap.

You were outplayed, Dirk. Suck it up and face it. Your team is all flash and still no substance. Dallas is the ultimate dog and pony show and will be as long as you have Mark Cuban calling all the shots.

yeah thank god it didn't hurt anyone...i was absolutely flabberghasted that it took the officials as long as they did to call a Tech...ive seen Techs called for a lot less quicker...plus Mike got a Tech on Sunday against the Warriors where he flipped the ball in the general direction of the basket and they were super quick in T'ing him up...I thought it was funny tonight cuz when Dirk hit that ball into the stands Mike had this look on his face like "oh that better be a technical foul"

As for the flagarant foul...i did notice that too...he didn't even once look in the direction of where K9 was laying on the floor...he didn't see if he was okay...say sorry anything...that to me was disgusting...we seen DSong take a nasty fall the other night and actually when he hit the ground Joel almost stopped completely to see if he was alright...and when Darius got up Joel was right there to see if he was okay and say sorry (though i don't think Darius noticed) and some Mavs fans actually had the nerve to say that was "payback" for Brads hit on Devin Harris last game bahahhahaha...whata joke...plus everyone knows after the game Brad went to see if Devin was okay...Brad didn't intentionally try to hurt the kid...and whats worse with Dirk is that he thought the flagarant was joke...and obviously he didn't appologize even after the game was over...ugh! I have never over the years hated Dirk...i always thought he was a nice guy on and off the court (even when he was killing us) but i don't know as of late he's been a real punk lately...and i still think he's prolly a nice guy off the court but on the court its not cool at all...obviously he's trying his best to shed is "soft" label...but really he's over stepping a bit IMO...quite frankly right now Dirk is acting like the kinda of player that Ray Allen would be complaining about these days...LOL

any you who I digress...

Brick great grades...i thought they were right on and came with great assessments

It was a big win for us...Peja was marvelous(<--i don't think ive ever used marvelous in a sentence before)...hopefully he can stay consistent...c'mon Peja! If he can and Mike can get out of his current shooting slump...we're cooking...IMO anyway...lets keep it going guys another tough game against Denver at their place...

GO KINGS!!

I would up Kenny to at least a B+ for the hard (NOT a Flagrant) foul in retaliation to Dirks punk play... good to see a King not afarid to give paybacks!

one thing has not not been talked been talked about is the poor performance of avery johnson...is it just me or did the new head coach of the mavericks not call timeouts at crucial moments when the kings made a strong run in the 4th quarter...also did not take advantage of key matchups in the game...so overall i give the new coach, avery johnson, a D in this game

also, altho i love mike bibby with a ****in passion, i thought he deserved a worse grade. he did just lil enough to deserve a good stat line, but he was honestly lit up by devon harris, if avery had given devon more minutes and gave him the ball the kings fans would be a lot less happy

bad game by the refs, poor calls all game long, first half against the kings and second half for them.

Fair grades I'd say....but I'm a sucker I would've given them all A's simply because that was a GREAT game of basketball...I was only listening to it and I felt the intensity of it...GREAT GAME GUYS! Keep up that toughness. PEJA!!! Where have you been, man...we missed you! Welcome Back!!!!
I think also that the Arco crowd deserves an A+ they were just playoff style electric tonight and I LOVE IT!! Wished I coulda been there!
I LOVE THIS TEAM!!! :D

i dont think there was much avery could have done to save this game, and i also think he did a pretty good job with matchups- like that 7-0 (8?9?dont remember exactly) that they went on after ra put in a smaller lineup- the mavs responded and we got killed.

as for mike, i agree. watching that game and looking at his stat line now, im kinda suprised, not expecting him to have stats close to that good. (the 33% from the field attributes to my lowly opinion of his performance) he contributed decently, but a lot of misses that he should have hit, leading to a mavs possession and points the other way should diminish his grade. im thinking particularly of a play where he broke away after a mavs turnover, got to the hoop, went for a layup and the ball barely hit the rim. this is a game mike should have dominated in.

hopefully one day all the kings will play at their fullest potential in one game. or seven.

I love Mike with a passion...he is my FAVORITE kings player! Seeing (or hearing) him play recently I see him trying to facilitate plays for other people, and I see him trying to create an offense that can cope without being completely dependant on him. I'm VERY proud of Mike's leadership after Webb's departure and I'm willing to let some poorly shot games slide because he plays his a** off out there and would never give us anything less than his best. :D Considering he did have 8 assists I think he played more of a playmaker role than that of a shooter. But you know Bibby, he'll always turn around and surprise you with some amazing shooting when he gets hot!

Don't even get me started on Dirks behavior last night. That is NOT how anyone should be playing basketball...he was just DIRTY last night...and if he thinks that's how he'll get more respect he's got a BIG surprise coming. He has got to know how wrong he was and how unacceptable his actions were...if he'd have hit me in the crowd you better believe I'd be on the phone to my lawyer the same night with dollar signs in my eyes! :D

i still love mike, im just dissapointed that not all the kings could play together at the highest level of play. of course, most of the time that's not true of mike. he just had an off night tonight, that's all. just imagine how much trouble the mavs would be in if he was on tonight. seeing peja, mike, cat, brad and bobby all playing their a-game in a series would be a thing of beauty...im keeping my fingers crossed for that one.

im ranting off topic. bottom line is, mike had an off night. i can forgive him though, he's still one of my fav players and i fully expect he'll be back to form in no time.

Good grades Brick. It was great to see Peja Have an A+ game finally. When he grabbed that rebound in the final minute I couldn't believe it. Maybe this will help his confidence. He almost had 10 rebounds, but on one Dirk pushed him and Cat leaped up and got it. As for Bibby, just an off game, but he has one annoying tendency. When he brings the ball up the court he sometimes uses too much clock. With Brad and Webb at the high post it didn't matter because we had more options for making plays, but now it often forces players to make bad shots.

Good grades Brick from what I saw. I only saw the second half do to a cable outage.

Peja was the player weve been searching fr! About time!!
