Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Life isn't always fair -- sometimes you try so so hard to give one away, and the other team just refuses to take it. Sigh.

In honor of Hedo and Mo Evans, the theme this time: Former Kings Who Aren't Lookng Back

Cisco ( C ) -- gave us a consistent extra offensive option in the first quarter (8pts) and then ended up losing most of his second quarter minutes anyway with virtually everyone in our backcourt rotation playing well and encountering minimal resistance. But went away after the early burst, and contributed a whole bunch of empty minutes until the stretch run, when he first tried to help us blow it with some wild one on one play, and then made a late smart play to help seal the deal, swatting a loose ball the full length of the court to run precious seconds off the clock for the Magic.

Bobby/Peja (New Orleans) -- current status: stealing money. Both guys are old and worn out, but damn if they aren't hooked up with another winner, and for the moment at least in their long time roles as starting SF/6th man. And the $$ are a lot better too.

Moore ( B+ ) -- in the early going was doing a solid job cleaning up all the bricks the Magic were throwing up, and while he was quiet in the second quarter, in the third provided us with a burst of energy after the Magic had climbed back into it. Obviously has about as much chance to guard Dwight Howard as I do (Mikki is taller, I am stronger), but was solid against everybody else, and did not get burned by the Hedo smallball PF stuff (of course it helped that Hedo was awful for much fo the night). Scrapped around on the glass with Howard at times as well (althought the end total was a bit inflated by one of those 3 offensive rebounds on play things where you get it, miss, get it, miss, get it etc.), and came wihtin 1 of his career high of 13. Did not feel like an A type game, even for Mikki. But he helped.

Hedo/Mo Evans (Orlando) current status: putting up career numbers/ same ole same ole. Of course tonight's duo of former Kings, and the inspiration for this theme. Hedo is starting for an EC playoff team, and the dreadful eprformance this time out aside, is threatenign to put up his career numbers doing it. Mo is still high flying off somebody's bench, but at least its no longer the Lakers. Oh, and yes, I'm pretty sure that is Hedo behind Richard Jefferson in the above picture -- could not find one that clearly had both Hedo and Mo together, so best I could do.

Miller ( B- ) -- well tonight we got to witness the contrast between one of the sport's great athletes and interior players, and a guy with the lumbering drive/flat footed jumper game of a 45yr old weekend warrior. But while that went kind of now you would expect it to, the weekend warrior drew some blood of his own before it was over. Brad was missing his early jumpers, which are the necessary counter to Howard's power game. Eventually got a couple of hoops off of nice setups from Salmons, and was helping orchestrate the offense with his passing (and the Magic's clueless first half D). In the third started to get that fugly offensive game going, and put up a bunch of points, although never efficiently. Got creamed on the glass as expected, and Howard just ignored him on defense, shooting over him at will (to the tune of 11-13 shooting). On the other hand Brad repeatedly hit cutters in the first half with the Magic playing lazy defense, and then stepped outside in the second half for not only jumpers, but those oh so graceful gallops toward the paint as well. We lost the battle at center tonight, but we knew that coming in -- that battle was lost sometime last summer when the schedule was released. But it could have been worse. Brad wasn't going to remotely stop Howard, but in the end he made his own contributions to the victory.

Brian Skinner (Phoenix) -- current status: chasing a ring. After years in the wilderness King Tut (now with funky multi-colored Tut-beard) is all of a sudden a rotation player for a title contender. Sure, the money isn't what it once was, but that will follow too if he's a contributor to a title winner.

Salmons ( B ) -- in the first half my only notes on John were "solid first half for John doing a little bit of everything, and operating smoothly out there." And after the game I doubt I would change that much. Could mention a big hoop he had in the final minutes to help us stave off yet another defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. Could mention the success he had guarding the much larger Hedo. Could mention that he didn't do much else as far as making guys better or hitting the glass. But in the end "solid game for John doing a little bit of everything, and operating smoothly out there," wouldn't be too far off. Helped that Magic could not find a single player shorter than 6'10" to give them a game. Mo Evans might have been their best "little", and the only guy that John struggled with at all might have JJ Reddick in the desperation time at the end of the game.

Scot Pollard/Eddie House (Boston) current status: 29-3. Of course there was no way in hell that I was going to find a picture of Scot and Eddie out there together, unless it be garbagetime. So I took this one since its one big party up in Beantown, and Scot is probably somewhere there off to the right (i.e. the bench). Lot of ex-Kings having fun this year.

Udrih ( B ) -- perhaps making a last desperate "I got this -- trade Mike" statement before his imminent return to 6pt 2ast reservedom, and came out firing on all cylinders. Not so much firing, as in just chucking up jumpers, as in just working over the Magic's completely inept PGs in the first quarter. Going right, going left, cutting to the hoop, and neither Arroyo nor Nelson showed any ability to stay in front of Beno. Kept the heat turned on all half, and was our leading scorer with 16 at the break. Which does present a bit of a problem of course when you finish with 17. Part of the slowdown was no doubt the result of what must have been a very colorful halftime speech form Stan Van Gundy to his PGs. But part of it too looked to jsut be that odd streakiness of play that has defined Beno with us. He doesn't necessarily get hot as a shooter so much as he jsut gets hot as a player in all facets, and then quiets back down to settle into the background. And unfortunately when he reemerged for us this time, it wasn't really for the good -- got needlessly aggressive and sloppy down the stretch and was threatening to help turn the stretch run ito another debacle for us with turnovers. Can't decide whether he wants to be a late game hero type, or a late game undependable goat.

Ronnie Price/Jason Hart (Utah) -- current status: nothing has changed. Why oh why a 50 win Jazz team should look at our muddled backup PG mess last year and decided to import it wholesale I will never know, but they did just that. For Ronnie and Jason nothing has changed since their days in Sacto except that they play for a better team (presumably they will start playing as such sooner or later). As once again more or less direct competitors for minutes there were of course not goingt o be pictures of both scrubbies on the court at the same time, so jsut went with Ronnie.

Douby ( B+ ) -- hit a big contested three at the end of the first quarter, which combined with Dahntay's buzzer beating heave a few seconds later gave us an instant 6 point bulge to change the flavor of the game going into the second quarter. And maintained the momentum form the Chicago game with 12 pts in the first half. Several of them this time off the drive as well, rather than just the chucks. And why the Magic, who were clearly on some sort of sedative in that first half, would repeatedly leave a hot shooter open at the three point line is beyond me. In the 4th though Quincy fell back into his selfish and forcing thing, and got pulled before he accelerated our attempted collapse. So two good scoring games in a row. Quincy too making acase for minutes that just aren't going to be there in a few days. He might be the 8th PG/SG/SF in the rotation. Yo Geeooooffff...anybody hooooommee?

Bonzi Wells/Rick Adelman (Houston) -- current status: coming back. And on this one I have my doubts about the central premise of not looking back, but both men have a fresh start now, Bonzi is back to being Bonzi, and the Rockets seem to finally be settling into Rick's system with TMac out. If they make it in I'll be rooting for these guys in the West for as long as they last.

Williams ( C+ ) -- brought in as perhaps our best shot at matching Howard physically, which was of course just, no. Got involved in a lot of hustle plays around the hoop, but only rarely got the numbers himself.

Matt Barnes (Golden State) -- current status: grieving. Denied his payday/security over the summer, and then having his mom die on him only last month, it hasn't been an easy year for Matt. But he is back someplace where he is wanted, in the rotation, and wiht another shot at longer term security in the future. Best yet it is close to home, so the snub by his hometown team may not hurt as much as it once did.

Jones ( B+ ) -- his 35ft heave to close the first quarter went in, but later got an offensive foul over aggrressively flying around and headed ot the bench soon therafter. In the second half came up with another huge follow jam to help us stay up, and followed it by drawing a charge on defense to give us the ball right back. Sharing Quincy's shoes as a guy playing well soon to not be playing at all.

Anthony Johnson (Atlanta) current status: starting again. For those old timers who predate the Holy Year '99, Anthony Johnson was the last starting PG for the Kings of the pre-Adelman era. Of course he should never have been starting -- he was a rookie, I think a second round pick, and at no point in his career has he been anything more than a spot starter. But he was all we had, and frankly we played it smarter back then and weren't really all that adverse to losing some extra games that season. Well, a decade later and it has come full circle for Anthony, and he is back starting again. But this time he is starting for the emerging young playoff team (just ask either of the Hawks' fnas) rather than the dying shell as he was in Sacto.

Hawes ( INC ) -- nothing in a short first half stint, replaced as soon as Howard came back on the floor. Five points in a short 3rd quarter stint, all off jumpers unfortunately, and the second a bounced in three pointer from the corner. Raef LaHawes.
chris_webber_shopping_trip_3.jpg

CWebb (free agent) -- current status: sipping mai tais on a beach somewhere. With a $20 milion paycheck coming his way this year regardless, Webb has chosen to take that whole silly grinding traigin camp/regular season thing off before jumping in wiht a contender late. And maybe in the end, the rest of his career. Either way, its a good life.

Theus ( ) -- quick note in case I do no more here: used a good timeout in the early 3rd after the Magic opened with a big run, broke it up, and it was the only one they would make until we attempted to forfeit the game with late incompetence again.

glad i went to this game....first time ive seen the kings win a home game in almost 2 years!!! ok thats not fair....although its true I no longer live in town and am home between semesters for the long holiday break! great win go kings!!!!!

Can players from the other team be graded?

On their looks?

smieyebrowty4.gif

Ut oh.

Is another of the Kings faithful ready to take performance enhancing drugs if they could look like Dwight Howard?

Poor John Salmons. A few short weeks ago he was hella sexy, but now he's chopped liver.

Theus outcoached SVG this time around. SVG got a technical when his team needed poise to continue their run. Then he burned a crucial timeout for no apparent reason other than to give the Kings another chance to steal an inbound play.

I'm very proud of our Kings last night. You could tell the huge minutes were weighing down on the Kings reserves (now starters) and the 4th quarter really proved that. However, they found just a little bit of energy late in the game (symbolized best by Garcia's desperate poke of the ball back across the court). There were no flukes or tricks or stars that won the game tonight. It was just a bunch of guys trying their hardest.

The one constant this season has been the Kings' effort. An A+ for effort. This team plays harder than any of the good Kings' squads of the past. They just lack in the superior talent dept. But win or lose, giving 100 percent makes them worth watching. I love this team!

One thing I really like about Theus is his willingness to burn a timeout when the wheels are starting to wobble.

i bet slim is upset about that omission even though i would argue that hedo is having a better year so far. but in terms of relative improvement, wallace wins it hands down.

by the way, i can't do anything but admire the vertical leap of peja in that first picture. with all the injuries he had to suffer throughout his career which had started really at a young age, it is completely understandable. still, it makes worms proud of their own athleticism.

Speaking of vertical leap, while compiling those pics I stumbled across this fun little photo:

As for the Gerald thing..yeah, how could I have forgotten about him? But I was aiming for guys on teams doing well more than anything else, and wiht the Cats struggling, never even really considered them/him even though he has openly said he's glad to have moved on.

The thing I love most about these pictures is not the person doing the jumping, but the background. The faces of the other players/fans are priceless.
