Don't Make Me Use The Bat
And our theme tonight should please more than a few: Really Really BIG Bugs

Artest ( B ) -- good scoring first half, and had some moments on defense. Only took one or two forced shots, and set people up pretty well. Continued in a similar vein after half. A few tough makes aorund the hoop, just enough harassment on Kobe to slow him down, and one or two forced shots in our shaky 4th. A key little note here: gave us nothing on the glass on a night when we got pounded once again there. Not grade A Ron, but good enough Ron with Mike doing his usual flashback bit against the Lakers.

GIANT WATER BUG (TOE BITER)

Thomas ( C ) -- converted on several nice inside passes in the ball moving first quarter, not much else, although was not overwhelmed by the Lakers bigs this time. Did little after half and as usual of late watched the last 15 minutes of the game from the bench. For those few solid takes in the first half felt like givng him a "+" here, but Kenny is really out there to do one thing, rebound, and he did not again tonight as we got creamed on the glass.

RHINOCEROUS BEETLE

Miller ( C+ ) -- adequate first half, although missed several rebounds he should have had. Finally hit his first shot to give us our biggest lead of the half at 18 a minute before the break. Threw a couple of bad passes late, but also had a good board or two, and may have provided just enough interior resistance to keep the Lakers bigs from finishing cleanly around the hoop. Maybe. Also found Kevin for a couple of good passes as usual. In any case, not a good game, but not a terrible one.

GIANT WETA

Martin ( B ) -- strong first quarter playing a part in our passing/shooting display before halftime, and was using his quickness to create for others as much as himself. Only scored 5pts in the third, but they came all at once in a key little burst as after the Lakers had cut the lead to 11. Largely quiet after half though. Some points heer and there, but nothing major. Was able to pretty much have his average game against Kobe, and Kobe had his average one the other way (albeit more against Ron and Salmons). That's still big edge Kobe, but it was enough and mostly all you can ask for in that matchup.

Bibby ( A+ ) -- played a nearly flawless first half aside from a couple of forced floppy drives. Scored himself, knocked down open shots, and ran the offense very well. Largely controlled teh action before the break. Was ok in the third, but not dominant. And then was left on the bench for a long stretch in the 4th quarter, and seemingly almost frozen out of the offense until a timeout at the 4:00 mark. Was a key timeout, because we were carefuly lining up uberchoke #1318 of the season until Mike came out, uh..."roaring" from the timeout, and immediately started flopping like a fish on every hint of contact. He got to the line, knocked down most of the FTs in the next couple of minutes, and then followed that with big hit after big hit to squelch any hope the Lakers had of sneaking up on us. Amusing how Mike still plays this way against the Lakers after all these years -- no wonder they wanted him. Gets the "+" tonight for clearly being "the man" for us, setting the tone early, and finishing the opponent off late. About as good as he is going to play.

TITANUS BEETLE (left)

oh and speaking of which, those things on the right are:
800px-Macrodontia.cervicornis.jpg

which roughly translates to BIG TOOTH BEETLE

Reef ( B ) -- shot 4-4 off the bench in the first half and helped build our second quarter lead. Gave us no rebounds, but played a role (scoring) well, and di it as much outside as inside. Played a better rounded game after half, but missed any chance at getting the "+" here by whining his way into a stupid technical foul to close the third quarter with us up 21. 21! I mean completely duh and selfish. This guy would stop the ceremony to throw a tantrum if the caterer served the wrong brand of caviar at his daughter's wedding.

GIANT WALKING STICK

Corliss ( B- ) -- scrappy effort off the bench in the first half -- missed outside shots, drew fouls, missed FTs, but was effective banging inside against a long Lakers team curiously unable to defend the rim. Started the 4th off throwing a terrible inbounds pass for a turnover and we got another 2rebs out of him as a PF in 21 min. Also made some shaky fouls. did wwhat he does well (score inside). Not wiling to vouch for the rest of the game tonight.

Salmons ( C+ ) -- quiet first half -- did not have much luck trying to slow Kobe. And while he was modestly effective thereafter, he probably got too many second half minutes as they helped keep Mike pinned to our bench while the Lakers slowly chipped away at our 4th quarter lead.

ATLAS MOTH

Cisco ( C- ) -- the evil dumb Cisco made a first half appearance with some unforced errors and unsmart shot selection, and maybe it was a good thing that we didn't hear much from him thereafter.
giant-camel-spider.jpg

GIANT CAMEL SPIDER (our own Quickdog has a story about these puppies)

Price ( INC ) -- came in to start the second quarter and immediately stole the ball, but little else and no second half minutes.

Muss ( ) -- ooh, and look at the team rally to ensure Muss will remain your Sacramento Kings coach for a very VERY long time. ;) We came out with a very strong offensive first quarter, seemingly keeping the momentum from the Charlotte game right on rolling. The ball moved very well, and while many of these teams seem to be floundering in the long season doldrums, we on the other hand our just hitting our 37 win 14th pick in the draft no hope stride. But hey, at least if we're going to be stuck in our slow sad slide to oblivion, we still beat the Lakers, right? Muss made a good timeout call in the early third to break Lakers momentum out of halftime (we took back our KoolAid after recent aberrations where other teams had obviously pilfered it), and called a set play to get Kevin a score and stop the bleeding. Also made a good sub to match Artest's 4th quarter substitution with Kobe's. But on the other hand he again displayed too much confidence in a bench not worthy of it, and late in the game nearly got us in trouble pinning our best player ot the bench until it was almost too late, and he was nicely iced.

i was at the game and it was nice to see them actually play some team ball... bibbys defense looks even worse in person... but his shot is just so damn nice...

corliss should have gotten an A... for almost starting a fight with turiaf... i cant stand him...

An "A" for Muss in Laker's Win

Muss deserves an A. No doubt about it. First, because of the press that he has taught (that is a coach thing, right?). Second, for using it in the first half to perfection (another coach thing). Third, in the 3rd quarter, with the score 67-56 in favor of the Kings, and Artest and Bibby reverting to the, "I've gotta get mine" dribbling show, Muss takes a needed timeout. And it wasn't just the timing of the timeout, it was what he did afterward that was impressive. He started calling the plays. If the vets don't know how to run an offense, then he will. So he starts running double screens for Martin, not only getting Martin back into the offense, but also working Kobe's butt off on defense. That's a double win. These are the plays:

1) Double screen for Martin - 2 pts

2) Artest goes 1 on 2 -- turnover; Kobe dunk. I have to believe that this was Artest "improvising" on his own.

3) Another double screen for Martin - 3 pts.

4) A fake of a double screen to Martin (He was wide open), and a pass by Miller underneath to Thomas for a 2-footer.

5) Another double screen for Martin -- Kobe fouls him, trying to prevent the cut. Martin gets 2 free throws. Kobe is now yakking at the officials; he's obviously ticked because he's getting his A$$ kicked by those screens and by Martin.

That changed the tide. And although Bibby and Artest reverted for short periods of time back to their, "I've gotta get mine" mentality, it wasn't enough to cause the Kings to lose.

But Muss did do a terrible job of rebounding.:D They got DEMOLISHED on the boards, 44-25. But despite Muss's terrible rebounding, they won the game because of the turnover differential. Or, you could say, that Muss, with his excellent coaching overcame his rebounding deficiencies.:)

Let's not crown him yet, but if he "now knows his team", we should see a steady progression + consistency from the little guy.

Those are some dang nifty lookin' bugs!!!

And the grades are pretty good, too!!!

Is this some kind of psychotherapy where you are trying to associate Kings wins this season with gross, icky, SCARY things?

It couldn't be, he included Ultraman, a kick-*** superhero, a couple of threads back!

Oh, wait... that would have been after a loss, wouldn't it?

Yuck!! But I love the themes -- the perfect diversion to this wasted season. Why do they keep winning?!?? They are as bad as the 76ers, just good enough to screw themselves. Ugh.

Anyway I resisted after the rainbow theme but can no longer --- MASCOTS, MASCOTS, MASCOTS (with the Montreal Expos Youppi! included pretty please).

creepy, those giant camel spiders look like those things from the Aliens films...you know those things that turn into chestbursters.
