the moves you're talking about are absolutely drastic.
No they aren’t. Drastic is trading Evans or Cousins for an established vet.
You don't trade for a former All Star and give up two of your major rotation players without significantly changing the complexion of the team
I think Billups could significantly change the team for the better.
some of them are completely unrealistic and others would not make the team better. Up or down
What’s unrealistic about them? Can you give some specifics?
And that being the case, those deals don't happen very often. None of the players you're talking about were available in free agency any time in the recent past. We're talking about players that we would have to trade for, and bottom line on trades is that it's impossible for us to know what goes on in Geoff Petrie's office.
Right. Like I said, I was throwing out ideas. People were acting as if I wanted The Kings to sign or trade for just any average player so I offered a few examples to show the type of moves I was really talking about.
I disagree that those deals don’t happen very often. None of the trades I suggested were anything too out of the ordinary.
We don't know what offers are made, rejected, etc. The mechanics of the process seem to have taken a back seat to your perspective, and I don't think that's a fair way to evaluate the situation.
Sigh. I specifically state that I was simply throwing ideas out there of what
I think would help the team and that it wasn’t meant to be taken literally, and still folks take it literally. Obviously none of us know the mechanics involved, the behind the scenes issues, what they may have already tried to do, etc.
I was just listing some moves that I think would help the team and that would be the type of moves I would try and make were I in the position to do so.
I happen to think that if we offered the Sixers Casspi and a first that they'd turn it down on talent, and maybe accept it on the basis of "hell, we've got to get out from under this awful contract, so let's just do it and hope the Kings don't play themselves out of the lottery." Which brings up the fact that we'd be foolish to trade Casspi for Iguodala because he's overpaid and isn't going to make your team a contender.
That he isn’t going to make them a contender is a pretty poor reason for not doing the trade. If you eliminate all trade possibilities on that basis, you pretty much eliminate all trades period. Unless you get lucky and land Carmelo, Wade, Lebron, etc., you don’t just make one trade and presto, you’re a contender. Baby steps. You have to crawl before you walk. It’s about getting better one step at a time, not being an instant contender, and Iguodala would in theory at least, make the Kings a better team.
It seems as if some of you only want the Kings to make a move if they’re getting a top 5 player in return. I just don’t understand where some of you guys are coming from.
Lastly, with regard to the veteran addition helping the team, perhaps there's an intangible benefit to adding a veteran guard, but we're not talking about an appreciable increase in wins, I don't think. A guy like Billups would help, particularly at the end of games, and Prince would give us a solid but limited swing player with experience, as opposed to our young guys who are struggling to find consistency, but neither turns this team into a contender.
There’s that “if it doesn’t turn the team into a contender it isn’t worth doing” logic again. You do realize that The Kings are starting from the bottom, right? They aren’t the Bulls, Jazz, Nuggets, etc. that are one player away from being a serious contender and can attract a player that will get them over the top. The Kings have to start from the bottom and first build themselves into a good team before they even start thinking about being a contender. Barring some good quality roster additions, the Kings won't be anywhere close to a contender unless Casspi, Greene, and Thompson suddenly blossom into excellent players.
If we're talking about adding a guy of that ilk in two years when we're a 45-55 win team and need help to get over the hump, that's a different story
This team, as it exists today, won’t be a 45-55 win team in two years, or even three years. They just don’t have that type of talent. People have overestimated their overall talent level. Everything is riding on Evans and Cousins developing into perennial all stars. That may happen, but it probably will take more than 2 years. Unless you want to continue to suck in the meantime, and risk losing Evans and Cousins when their rookie contacts are up, they need some quality help.
