Finally!

Official Boxscore

Garcia ( B- ) -- a cynic might note that Cisco's offensive contribution again consisted of nothgin but three three point shots, two of which came in the early going here. But the cynic would miss the fact that the third of the threes was a huge one at the 4:00 mark of the game, and that during the long dry spell in between Cisco's contributions were on the other side of the floor, where he spent his energy harasing and slowing RUdy Gay -- the same Rudy Gay who lit us up for 32 and 9 last time around. But even in that earlier game Cisco had shown in limited minutes he could do the best job on Gay for whatever reason, and here he was solid the whole game long. Got his early threes on drive and dishes from Reke, his last on a spectacular open court drive and dish from Beno, and just living that spot up three point shooter role right now. Really got into Gay defensively after half as well. So 9pts 2reb 2ast in 27min = pretty anemic. But this one was a good example of how/what a roleplayer's value is. Not everybody can score 15 or 20, there always have to be guys around who just spot up and create space and do the dirty work, and Cisco did a nice job of that tonight. Should be noted that during the celebration after the shot Reke went to seek him out, so maybe an acknowledgement of that veteran leadership stuff too.

Thompson ( D ) -- not a very complimentary picture, but seemed appropriate for this game. Was back...but not really. Not productive in there against Randolph, and neither able to slow him himself, nor to get anything going offensively where all we got to see were several forced one on one post turnarounds from 16 feet that had no chance. Topped the evening by being in constant foul trouble, and saw us go bgb-big with Dalembert and Cousins out there together almsot as often as he was paired with either one. While I applaud Westphal for actually remembering what an embarrassing slaughter Randolph laid on Landry back in the first game and going with more size instead, hopefully this rusty JT effort won't lose JT the starting spot just that quick to Westphal's happy footed lineup pen.

Dalembert ( C ) -- Samuel Dalembert is a very good post defender in this league. Just a few days ago we saw him get into and slow the Blake Griffin express after the rookie had pummeled us in the first half of the Clippers game. And tonight he was generaly good against Marc Gasol and blocked his normal selection of shots, including a big one on Gay in the 4th. But he wasn't able to do anything to slow Zach Randolph on one of those big night benders he sometimes goes on, and after roughing up Jason, treating Landry like a speedbump, and just ignoring DeMarcus, the little tank worked over Daly for much of the game. And when your defensive specialist isn't able to actually slow a guy much on defense, that's going to hold the grade down a bit. Got his fair share of boards, although it felt like Randolph was getting them all, and displayed the normal offense, which is to say not much, as we again (and here Beno really needs to be slapped alongside the head) seemed to confuse him with DeMarcus at times and ask him to do things he just can't do. Probably had his best minutes when paired next to Cousins in our big Daly/Boogie frontline -- between the two of them they dominated the glass.

Udrih ( A- ) -- for much of this one was our key offensive player on the floor, and won the matchup all night long against Conley, who was just terrible. Winning the matchup with Conley in the early going, both by saavy offense and because Conley was screwing up in every way possible on the other end, blowing layups etc., and resumed beating on Conley after returning. Got his hands on several passes up top defensively. Maybe not steals, but disruptions. Was our most consistent offensive player through three, and stood out by dependably hitting his FTs. Was not the player who won it for us, but came up with a really nice transition driving all the way to the hoop at full speed and finding Cisco in the corner for a three to cut the lead to 4 late and make the comeback possible. On the other hand committed the dumb dumb foul at the 31 second mark when all we needed to do was go back and play defense -- it was a 2pt Grizzlies lead, we missed, there were 31 seconds to go. All we have to do is defened, grab the rebound, and then go try to tie/win it, but Beno brainlessly mugged Conley in the backcourt puttig u in severe jeopardy. Shades of the fouling a three point shooter error a few games back. In any case, if we lose it that error maybe costs us the game and costs Beno a half grade. Since we pulled it out, water under the bridge.

Evans ( B ) -- yay! And finally some joy in Kingsland. Got off to the strong start to this one, not quite dominant, but solid and in control of the action while facing off with another top notch defender (Tony Allen). Several turnovers early, but also several draw and kicks for 3ptrs. Hit a three of his own in the early 2nd on the kick from Cousins to beat the double. Did miss a pair of FTs though. As mentioend Allen is a tough defender though, and Reke got fewer good looks as he went along. Made it unclear if he was slowing after half again, or whether the Grizzlies had slowed him. Stayed solid thoguh this time. And then of course completed what he started the other night vs. the Clippers. Came so close to heroing us to a W in that one, and this time just took over int he final two miutes and finsihed the deal. Came up with a huge steal from Conley up top at the 1:45 mark trailing by 4, and raced the other way to get to the line, where he hit both. After missing a 2 for 1 layup attempt at the 35 second mark (we were in the 2 for 1 situation and just wanted to get a shot up quickly) came up with a second huge steal, this one from behind on Mayo on the Memphis inbounds play and again raced the other way for a dunk to put us up one at the 16 second mark. And we were juat getting started with the dramatics, as Mayo hit an incredible off balance 21 footer over Reke for the apparent game winner with 1.5secs to go and Reke, with no timeouts left took the inbounds, raced up court and heaved a 50 footer for a clean swish at the buzzer and the win. Finally! Amazing finush. I don't give guys As for amazing finishes though, and overall we have seen better games from Reke. But he feels like he is back for us all of a sudden, and along with Reke's B tonight I think maybe we should give Reke's mom an A+ as a motivational speaker. Stop wallowing, quit feeling sorry for yourself, and go out there and play the way I know you can always sounds better coming from mom. As long as Reke continues to follow that advice, we are going to have a chance.

Bench

Cousins ( A- ) -- and it should defintely not be lost in all the Reke heroics that we had another important development for the franchise -- DeMarcus had his career game. This probably started a few weeks back, got interrupted by the stupidity that was Chokegate, but here the process continued with a strong solid physical effort from the big guy that continued from the opening tip to the final buzzer with barely a hint of emotional histrionics between. Was a little sloppy early, but came up with a steal near halfciurt, and led the break the other way for a Reke layup. Nifty stumbling offensive rebound and flip all in one motion to close the first. Picked up a variety of loose fouls, but not terrible ones, and was able to give us a full 36 minutes fo the good stuff. Came back to team with Dalembert, and mucked around on the offensive glass getting finishes. Used his physicality to get to the line repewatedly down the stretchof the half. Strong play got him the start at PF in the second half next to Daly, and came up wiht timely plays and a big rebounding effort as the game stayed close. Great play in the mid 4th showing those offensive instincts, getting bumped inside, losing the ball, scooping it back up, getting surrounded, and eventually coming up with a little half hook on the baseline. There wasa littel shaky late as he got fouled and missed two key FTs at the 4:30 mark, and later turned near disaster at the 1:00 mark into two points when he nearly turned it over, Beno saved it to Cisco, Cisco missed the three, but Cousins was still down inside and got fouled by Randolph going for the o-reb. Hit those two FTs, and then hit a quick layup out of the timeout at the 30 second mark ro cut the lead to 1 and give us another good shot at winning one. 21pts 16rebs on 8-16 shooting with 3 assists...by all rights I should call that a flat A for a rookie, but it felt a smidge less. Moments where he wavered, inability to help much on Randolph, a couple of near disasters late...getting closer all the time though.

Landry ( C ) -- now last time we faced this team Carl got absolutely pounded by Randolph inside, and generally made to look like a little kid playing in a grown man's league. We remembered that and did everything possibel to avoid that matchup here, not startign Carl, and bringing him in for the first time simultaneously wiht the Grizzlies taking Randolph out. But on a night when Randolph played 36 minutes and opened up a 35pt 17reb can of whoopass on our entire frontline, it was hard to completely avoid a repeat of the matchup. Even against not so fearsome Darrel Arthur Landry was quiet after entering and looking small, before finally starting to get to the line in the mid 2nd. Actually came up with more defensive plays than offensive plays after half. Got away with a goaltend near the end of the third that triggered a fast break for us. Strong o-board and finish in the early 4th, but then got called for the offensive foul trying to post up the next time down the floor. Came up with a steal in traffic and keyed a break that saw Reke get a three point play on Carl's last play og the game in the mid 4th before we wnet back to the mega Daly/Boogie frontline to close this one out.

Greene ( INC ) -- in ahead of Casspi to defend Gay, did not get much done in his 3:16 audition and next was seen displaying either incredible enthusiasm/confidence, or psychic abilities, on Tyreke's buzzer beater as Donte was hopping on court in excitement almsot as soon as it left Reke's hand.

Jeter ( B- ) -- minor bounceback game for Pooh. Came in and missed his first shot again making it 7 of his last 29, but then hit a contested jumper to break a big Memphis run in the mid 2nd, and followed with a layup on the break. Took the end of the third quarter shot too quickly (allowing Memphis plenty of time to get a shot up at the other end), but still drained it to cut the lead to 4.

Casspi ( B- ) -- came in and tried to post up Mayo, but tried too hard and turned it over. Energy picked up and got a dunk on a leakout, and grabbed a good offensive board. Got scrappy on the glass and defense down the stretch of the half. Back in near the end of the third and knocked down several bigt shots, including a three, in the final quarter. Didn't feel like this was a brilliant game, but it was a solid one giving us a little push, and a little timely push at that, off the bench. Definitely contributed to the win.

Jackson ( INC ) -- just in for 1 minute of foul saving work

Nice game by Tyreke and Cousins. Cousins looked very composed all night long. Good game by Beno as well. although Casspi didn't score that much, he did a lot of little things and he and Cisco did a good job of containing Rudy Gay. The Kings have been beaten by last minute miracles by the other team this year, so its only fair that they get the final miracle of the year.

Hopefully they've just primed the pump. Happy New Year!

Man Reke is coming back around and we finally trusted DMC late in game to go to work. Hopefully this is the one that these dudes can finally buid upon with a couple more of these games they can try to build some chemistry and some good spirits going for everyone fans and players alike going into the 2nd half. Def keeping my fingers crossed....

This was just an awesome game. I mean, when we trapped OJ and Tyreke stole it for the break away dunk I was pretty sure it was over. Then, Mayo made the heartbreaking off-balance J and I was sure it was over. Finally, Tyreke swished the 60 foot jumper and it was unquestionably over. Gotta love the NBA.

A+ to Donte for knowing the shot was going in before Tyreke or anyone else did.

This was just a good game all around. It took a monster game from Z-Bo and some monster turnover rates on our part for Memphis to get the lead over us in this one. Otherwise, the Kings played with much more unity than we've seen all year and they deserved this win, miracle shot or not.

Consolation A+ to OJ Mayo for his incredible shot too, since it will go overlooked. I doubt that we care that it will be, though. :p

So effin pissed that dish hasn't renewed the contract with CSNCA... i missed the the best game of the year because of some elitists greed.....
Best game? Nah. Best shot? probably. Im sure a lot of people wont agree with me when i say this but the way weve been playing for the past month or so has me optimistic for the future. mabe the kings can finally get something going for them. :)

That was awesome. Watching Arco Arena erupt like that was soooooo neat. WOW! Which Grizzlie player was that closest to the basket when Tyreke's shot was going through the net? Gasol? He just stood there watching the ball in mid-air and then through the net. He was totally stunned.

A little luck always helps.. Still credit goes out to the team for staying in it and putting themselves in a position to win the game.

Also, I saw some improvement in more than just Cousins game... He was making a real conscious effort to not argue every bad call and just play through them. It wasn't perfect, but Cuz made progress.

Had to go with Tyreke on the poll. DeMarcus had a great game, and Beno had a very good one too, but I can't vote against steal-and-dunk followed by beyond-half-court-buzzer-beater for the win. If Tyreke had 5 points, 2 of 25 shooting, 0-16 from the free throw line and 12 turnovers, he's still player of the game for those 5 points.

Was lucky enough to be at the game tonight. Felt like the old Arco crowds for the final 39 seconds, even though the arena was only 1/2 full. The energy in the crowd chanting "defense, defense" when the Grizzlies had their last possession was truly a crowd trying to will the home team to victory. The electricity when Reke hit the halfcourt shot was amazing.

Also, kudos to Casspi who's D has improved a lot this season. He did a really good job, not only playing man D on Gay, but also playing team D. He's earning more playing time.

Fully agree. Laughed when I saw the poll. There was only one answer I could give.

On another note. Thabeet looks like a lost cause. He was clueless when he was on the court. He picked up fouls at a rate that would make rookie JT blush. Then watching the replay of the game tonight, while Hollins is diagraming the last play and the entire Grizzlies roster is hunched over the huddle, Thabeet is grabbing his elbow behind his back turning back and forth like a little kid and looking away from the huddle.

I know more people will talk about Oden over Durant as a bad pick. But at least Oden was a concensus #1 and has had injury issues. Thabeet was a terrible pick at the times that many of us fans thought was a waste of the #2 pick and taking him over Evans, Curry and Jennings could go down as one of the worst picks of all time. Especially conidering how much more sophisticated evaluations and drafting is now than the 80s when it was much more common to draft stiffs early.

Umm Milicic over Wade, Carmelo, Chris Bosh ring a bell? Thabeet still has a long way to go before he's considered a worse pick than Milicic was.

I voted DMC. He played an excellent game the whole way, and his basket gave us a chance to begin with. No basket = No Evans steal, no half court heave. I was jumping around watching this game, and Evans definitely came up HUGE. This may not make sense but to me, Evans won the game while DMC was the player of the game. Don't really care though, it was an amazing finish

I can't stop watching the last play! It actually brought a tear to my eye. In a season of total misery for the fans and players alike, it was a New Year's miracle. After so many heart breaking losses recently those kids deserved it.
