Life's easy when you score 115 every night.

On this homestand now we have had these 5 games:

vs. Dallas 25assists 14TO 110pts
vs. Detroit 25assists 13TO 112pts
vs. Boston 29assists 14TO 120pts
vs. Minnesota 21assists 11TO 115pts
vs. Memphis 28assits 13TO 119pts

Which is kind of getting it done offensively. Too bad the defense remains so porous or The Prophecy might really have come true.

Boxscore

Salmons ( C ) -- responded to Reke's gesture offering to let him keep starting by really not giving us a very good one, and a 7pts in 30min start by John Salmons sounds all too familiar from the first half of the season. Not big enough to stop Gay inside on defense, same problem he had with him back early in the year. Split a pair of threes early, but generally not a factor while Cousins/Thornton/IT went off. Got a little more involved in the third but never got anything going as he did his dribble around looking for open spots to take a jumper thing. Bizarre foul taken in the final minute of the third -- must have been called by our bench? I had the Memphis feed, and they were completely mystified. DeMarcus had a bloody nose and that was apparently why the foul was taken. Except that we were over the foul limit so that foul actually gave the Grizzlies 2 FTs. Why would we do that? Let the refs stop play if they think DeMarcus is bleeding too much. Why give up 2 points in a fairly close game? Night ended early in the 4th after a short bad stint next to Reke when he seemed to revert to his ball pounding and sticky fingered ways. This wasn't John Salmons the stinky fish, but neither was it the Salmons playing in a different gear we've seen this month.

Thompson ( B+ ) -- not as sparkly as the last few efforts, but playing solidly in the first quarter again even without scoring. Zbo isn't fully himself yet, and Jason never had major problems with him, but some trouble with the bigger Gasol on defense though. Racked up 14 rebs grabbing the boards Cousins did not, but again there were some stretches where he wasn't getting it done on the glass and the Grizz were consistently scoring right at the rim. Dunk on the breakout to close the half and restore our 10pt lead that we bounced around for most of the night -- never able to fully shake the Grizz, but never really lost control of the game. Not as efficient as he has been the last few games, but again was really maing an impact as an addiitionl passer. Started getting into it with Randolph in the mid-4th and picking up fouls.

Cousins ( A- ) -- a colorful evening for DeMarcus. I can toss out what he did not do right at the beginning -- he did not rebound again as his rebounding, which stood at 11.8 per game entering the month, has slumped all the way down to 8.3/gm this month. But that was about the only thing he did not do on a night when he scored inside and out, took charges, blocked shots, passed the ball, and even briefly stole Smart's jacket and coached the team on the sidelines. A couple of nice power moves in the early going, but then picked up a foul trying to take a charge, soon got a second one on Gasol, and there he was in trouble before 6 minutes were gone. But we actually left him in for several minutes as I guess we were daring the refs or having Cousins working on not picking up another one or something. And while risky -- he even led the fastbreak again, a place where he has picked up charges in the past -- maybe it paid off in keeping him involved and getting him focused. Did not rebound in the first, but returned in the second with a couple of tough ones. Aggressive offensively after returning -- much better job going right at Gasol physically this game -- and Reke was giving him the ball and just clearing out of the way. That was both a good thing and a not so good thing as the aggressiveness turned ragged and a little sloppy, and DeMarcus missed a bunch of FTs while the lead shrunk down. Recovered with a huge dunk from Reke in the final minutes of the half to break a Grizzlies run, took a big risk on picking up that third foul trying to take a charge on Gay in the final minutes, and added a strong take in the final minute to psuh us back to the double digit lead before half. Was playing extremeley well in the third, making plays on both ends and coming up with a nice offensive hustle rebound and pass to a cutting Thornton. But out of frustration took a really bad and cheap foul for his 4th, and while we again left him in for a few mins, the foul trouble would be his big limiting factor again. Back in in he early fourth after the lead shrunk again, and immediately hit Reke with a nice pass on the cut and helped restore order. But made a huge mistake in the mid 4th fouling out on a silly open court play trying to slow Conley and with so much time left you thought uh oh. But we hung on, Reke immediately hit a jumper, JT took care of the middle, and IT closed up with the FTs. In the end DeMarcus plays 25 min. And during those 25min he scores 23pts and added 5rebs 3ast 4stl and 2blk. Imagine what he could do with 36min/night.

Thornton ( A ) -- managed to make Tony Allen into an offensive machine in the early going, but on the other hand completely ignored Allen -- an All leage defender if you recall -- on his way to an explosive 16pt first quarter in which at one point he hit 7 shots in a row. Finally heat checked a 1 on 1 three off his dribble at the end of the 1st to break the run. Returned in the second with a n immediate selfish force, but there weren't too many of those tongiht -- one of the more remarkable things of this little mini run we've gotnen on at home is that Thornton has notched 20 assists in the last 4 qames, and has 4 of his 5 highest assist games of the season over that span. Suddenly he's giving it up. Stepped back up in the final minute of the half canning a three, and then on the final play of the half stealing the ball up top and leading a break that resulted in a Thompson dunk and the return of our 10pt lead going into half. A few garbage type hoops in the early 3rd and very aggressive in the late 3rd after Cousins went out. And the thing that has always separated Thiornton from your typical shoting weenie of sa scoring guard, si that when he gets aggressive it doesn't mean he just starts chucking jumpers, it means he gets AGGRESSIVE, as in charging the hoop, using his athleticsm to bang around amongst the big boys and come up with offensive rebounds and follows etc. May have finally run out of steam however, as after 30 pts through three quarters, he would only nothc one ore in the 4th. But the damge as they say was done, and it was another huge stat stuffing 31pts 7reb 6ast 3stl night to make all of his fantasy owners *ahem* happy.

Thomas ( A- ) -- played one of his strongest gamss since the initial burst around the All Star break, and it was about what he did not do as much as what he did. Off to a fast start again with a jumper, a nice pass to a backcutting Thornton, and a runout with the +1 against Gasol. Made one mistake with a soft pass up top leadng to a Grizzlies runout and dunk. But collected a Thornton airball to close the first and laid it in for his 9th point. Thing is, it wasn't about his points -- that's where this was a nice outing. He did force a few threes in the early third, but when they didn't fall he knocked it off and did not score again until the mid 4th when he got a bunch of points when the Grizz started fouling him (their idea more than him forcing it) -- the 18 pts were thus kind of an illusion. This was 9pts until the end of the game, or 12 pts or just some game like that, where he concentrated on keeping the offense perking and giving us energy. And because of that you could feel it all night long when he wasn't on the floor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bench

Hayes ( C ) -- in for Cousins in the late 1st, did nothing until the beginning of the second when he threw a nice alley oop pass to Outlaw, and then finsihed (barely) a dropoff from Reke. Return to non-boarding ways though hurt us in the seond (never a good sign for a big to have nearly twice as fouls as boards), and the Grizz began to get all over the glass. Lot of minutes with Cousins in foul trouble again but too small to stop Gasol inside in late third, although the Grizz didn't use him much. When we lost momentum int eh early 4th was quickly subbed back out for Cousins until we lsot him for the last time. One of those games where Chuck was at best a placeholder.

Greene ( INC ) -- brief punchy first half stint that was atypical in some ways. Got fooled by Gay and blown right by for big dunk. Also got called for stepping out of bounds, and picked up a technical arguing it. Donte Greene. Technical. But came back with a tough 1 on 1 move the other way. Added a leaner, and just kept on scoring as everybody was joingin the party. Nice pass setting up Hayes as well, as everybofy as passing as well. Not a long enoguh stint to fairly grade from. B-ish though.

Outlaw ( INC ) -- an alley oop dunk from Hayes to start the second and saving hoop with a block were his two highlights from 5 min of play. And given that Travis Outlaw just had a highlight, I just had to post it. Kind of a Chuck Hayes highlight too, so two birds with one stone and all that.

Evans ( B- ) -- was kind of a surprise entry to begin the second quarter, at least to the Memphis announcers who did not expect him to play at all. Played a solid 2nd quarter working mostly as a setup man. Started with a dropoff to Hayes and scored on a full court rush. Got a half grade push here because he was one fo the few Kings playing consistently competitive defense. May have actualy fed Cousins too much as the big guy went through a rough patch and the lead began to erode. Got off to a shaky start to the 4th with a patchwork lineup, including a tough turnaround that felt I-haven't-shot-in-a-whilish and a turnover, leading to the starters being summoned back around him. Recovered with a series of strong takes and off ball cuts to punch the led back out on the wya to 9 4th quarter points. Not a banner nigth by Reke standards, but not bad either, and he kind of WAS the bench.

Fredette ( INC ) -- ineffective first half stint. Could not keep up with Pargo on defense, and offensively was completely invisible. No numbers of any kind in 5+min and did not return after half. fell behind Pargo after entering.

Whiteside ( INC ) -- got in at the very end of the 3rd in place of Cousins and in a few minutes of time did block several shots. Everything else, not so much.

4th.

I think some cred needs to go to coach Smart. Team seems to be having fun and playing more like a cohesive unit. That can only come from the top down.

It's always going to happen.. You score more points you will give up more points.. The Kings were getting into their offense and taking shots MUCH quicker tonight than at the start of the season, but I wouldn't say the defense recently has been any worse than it has been in the past. More possessions for both teams = more points for both teams. Not to mention in these last 3 games I have had more fun at PBP than I have had in the last five years going to games. It definitely beats standing around and only scoring 90 and allowing 92-100.

Bad flashbacks to the days of Kenny Natt

If the Kings ever get into a funk where they hold the ball he needs to save the tape on these three games and remind them what they are capable of.

No actually, that just means you are a bad team under a different name. Scoring 103 and giving up 108 is no different than scoring 94 and giving up 97. Either way you're going to lose most nights (compare that to when we were good, in 01-02 we averaged 104.6pts, and only gave up 97.6). We aren't just the worst at scoring defense. We're at or near the bottom in basically EVERYTHING. Which isn't about pace. Its about incompetence.

Now on the other hand, as I said above, life sure gets easy if you score 115 every night. Unfortunately that will not happen over an extended span and in the end, as always, the defense, or lakck thereof, will be the thing you end up counting on.

Kings starting to play good now when they have nothing to fight for.. Same as last year. Also Donte Greene has been looking good. Really really hope we give him at least one more year on the team.

I think the reason why the Kings are scoring much more now is because of the ball movement and the fast breaks. So I think that they can keep scoring that much as long as they stick to what theyve been doing.

I dunno. If we win 20 in a row, we may be able to snag the 8th seed.

This team functions so much better when Isaiah is given full control of the offense. Tyreke had a solid game of the bench, but you can see the difference when he has the ball in his hands. He tends to slowly dribble up the floor crossing the half court line at the 17 second mark, dribbles for a little and finally the offensive starts at around the 13 second mark of the shot clock. On the other hand when Isaiah is bring the ball up the offense gets started much earlier, and he is barking out orders to teammates.

Thornton had another great game, he is so tenacious out there, while he isn't the greatest man defender, he is extremely good at reading passing lanes and getting his hands on loose balls. Only bad stint was late in the 3rd where we isolated him a few times and he took some bad fadeaway jumpers.

Cousins was dominating the Memphis front line, too bad he can't get it through his head to reach in the backourt. JT with another great utility PF game, his motor is off the charts, and he usually just keeps getting better as the game goes on as the opponent tires.

It's fun seeing tweets like this on ESPN after a game.

NBAonESPN The NBA on ESPN
RT @DimeAlert: FINAL: Kings 119, Grizzlies 110. Thornton and Cousins terrorized Memphis, leading the way for Sacramento.

Thought this was the most impressive of the last three. Mem is a pretty good team, although I think throwing Randolph is there threw them off a little. Movement keeps getting better, and guys are really learning where the gaps will be, and hitting them with good timing.

Cuz is a monster.

babysteps, finally having an offense that doesn't turn the ball over by the time they cross the half court is a good sign. Next up defensive rotations and assignments.

So what do we do? I always thought that if you out score the other team you win the game. We won tonight. We are the best in the world. No one could have done more. I know your point. We need to play better defense. But I thohght our situational defense was quite good when it counted tonight.

Incedently, I was at the game tonight and it's the first win my son and I haved seen since the first week of the season. Go Kings!!!!!

Lighten up. Enjoy the win. Jeez. The fact of the matter is the Kings are clicking on all cylinders on offense. They have blown out 3 quality opponents in a row. Do you remember how unwatchable this team was at the beginning of the year? Zero ball movement, 11 assists/17 TO's type stats, etc. Smart is developing the young players and getting his team to play team basketball. They are playing with heart and know their roles now. They have shown at times they can be a decent defensive team. Give the coaching staff more time to work on the defense. In the meantime, have a beer, relax, and enjoy these victories.

This. Some improvement is better than no improvement at all. And after having to trudge my way through five plus years of absolutely moronic coaching, I'm just happy to see our team not completely embarrass itself.

The point of my post is that the defense isn't any worse than it was at the start of the season. If there are more possessions then there will be more points scored if our defense is the same as it was at the start of the year.

I agree.

A lot of u are talking about trading thorton in the off season I dont think they will hes our main scorer and his d certinly geting better hes all over the place

The team looks more comfortable out there and they are having fun. They look quicker. I've been impressed with JT. He's been working hard and putting up very good numbers. Great to see. A little work on D and watch out. These have been good days for Kings fans.

Go Kings!

Thornton is finally starting to play like the player we thought he would be this year. He's doing it all -- scoring, rebounding, even making some nice passes. Again, you have to give Smart some credit. He's totally turned around DMC, MT, JT, and even Salmons and Outlaw.

I'm going to list all the league leaders in fouls per game for the last bunch of years...

11-12 Demarcus Cousins Sac
10-11 Demarcus Cousins Sac
09-10 Jason Thompson Sac
08-09 Greg Oden Por Jason got 2nd and Oden only played 60 games.
07-08 Mikke Moore Sac

Anyone noticing a trend?...lol

Did anyone notice that Fredette played about 5 minutes? I am not saying that led to anything good or bad but we DO have an overload of decent guards, all of whom deserve time on the court. One has to go.

I think the tighter rotation helped. Jimmer didn't look good when he was in in the 2nd.

Agreed. Right now Coach Smart is making Jimmer earn his minutes. He's gotten more minutes when he plays better, but he didn't look that good tonight. He was also completely lit up by Conley in the 2 previous games back when he was getting more minutes (which he didn't earn).
