Don't Make Me Use The Bat
That was just silly.
Had a Girls theme all queued up, and look what happens -- a game breaks out with all kinds of big numbers. Since I utterly defy anybody on here to claim they predicted that Beno Udrih, who had never once in over 400 games in the NBA even grabbed 10 rebounds, was going to have a triple double tonight, I think the theme shall be: Beno in Pictures: Didya Know? (Everything Else You Didn't Know About Beno)

McGuire ( INC ) -- ah, life as a defensive specialist. You are sitting there on the practice squad, finally get bumped up all the way into the starting lineup...just so you can go try to stop the best player in the world. Wasn't going well early as he wasn't stopping LeBron, and he notched two turnovers the other way -- one a bad pass, and the other butterfingers -- int he first 5 minutes. Then as the cherry, he went down with a foot injury and had to leave the game and never return. Am thnking he wishes he never woke up this morning.
Didya Know? Beno has not only walked on the moon...
Landry ( B- ) -- and adding to the silliness of this game was the fact that the guy who you would have said absolutely HAD to have a monster game for us to even come close in this one, really didn't. Was a contributor. Kept on peppering in shots until a late collapse (and has anybody else noticed that Carl Landry, superclutch 4th quarter dominator as a Houston reserve, really hasn't been anything special for us down the stretch as a Sacramento starter? I would imagine its simply legs aren't as fresh, and has used up most of his juice earlier rather than saving it for a big 4th quarter change of pace rush). Opened things up with a couple of jumpers sandwiched around a dunk on the baseline off a scramble play. Then got a side jumper partially blocked. Missed the half hook. Good strong rebound in traffic, but then swarmed by the Cavs who blocked his follow attempt then ripped the ball away. Mistake on the inside under our hoop trying to feed it out and start the break, but handing it to the Cavs instead. Started the third wiht a little jumper, but then begna to get smothered inside and responded wiht back to back turnovers. Came bakc with both inside and outside scored over Hickson and got foueld for his only FTs of the gmae (which he split) near the end of the quarter. The 4th didn't go so well as he missed the side jumper out of the timeout at the 6:00 mark, tried again next time down the floor and airballed it. Then missed the turnaround in the post. Went after the ball on the late scramble play and got it, but slid out of bounds. Finished up right on his season averages for us -- 17pts 6reb on 8-17 shooting. But also had 5 TOs and was not his best down the stretch of a game which you would almost have called winnable if you didn't know anything about the two teams playing.
...he also discovered it.
Thompson ( A- ) -- nearly as surprising as Beno's triple double was this performance by JT. Forced not only into a starting role, but into a complete game 48 minutes (this a bit odd as for some reason apparently Dorsey has lost all of Wetphal's confidence), disaster would be easy to predict. This IS Jaosn we are talking about. And yet in many ways Jason never showed up -- the pod person who took his place apparently did. To which I just have to say "go podperson!" Not only did he survive 48 minutes, he did it being rock solid thorughout, never really having one of those JT moments when you wonder just how firmly the stem is attacked to the brain, amnd never remotely sniffing foul trouble. Started the game galloping right to the hoop when the Cavs completely ignored him, and maybe that was the key -- a surprise starter, and guy who has lost his position as somebody you gameplan against, and he made them pay. Had a bad pass turnover trying to feed it inside into traffic but closed the quarter knocking down back to back jumpers. Started the 2nd missing his jumpers, but got a little layup to go over the front of the rim and had a good take going right at and through Big Z. Nice job on a double on LeBron along the baseline playing it halfway and deflecting LeBron's kickout pass to creat a turnover. Strong first half playing both ends and on the glass. Began the third with an aggressive take but wild finish attempt that had no chance -- mayeb the closest thing to a calssic brain off JT play we saw on the night. Missed the spinning post move. Came up wth a nice blcok on West on the drive, but the Cavs got it back and he fouled on the second attempt. Nice little post hook. Able to draw several fouls down the stretch and hit all the FTs. Good block in the last minute on Jamison, but too little too late. I'm going to stick a "-" on here as it took him 48 minutes to put up these numbers, and in amore normal game they are closer to maybe 12 and 10 then 16 and 14. But regardless of what the exact numbers were, this was one of the most mature games we've seen out of Jason. Little dumbness. Played within himself. This podperson Jason could be useful. Whatever you've done wiht the real JT...just leave him there.
Beno's been known to walk on other things as well...
Greene ( D ) -- and as much as some of the big games we had in this one were just off the wall, so was Donte's game, only in a largely opposite way. He played 27+ minutes and the first half of it was just completely, and I do mena COMPELTELY, invisible. And even after breifely emerging into the light in the second half there were only a handful of things to talk about here. His grand total contribution before half was an early miss off the drive. In the 3rd got an offensive rebound and was fouled, and while he hit only 1 of 2, it tied the game up, and I sincerely doubt we thought we wouol be in that position that late in the game. Blocked a shot by Hickson, but traveled ont he drive the other way. In the 4th got fouled along the baseline and hit both. Finished his night 0-4 with a missed jumper and a wild drive to close things.
