Buyout? He's 27. He wants another $25M-$40M contract, and the end of this year is his chance to prove that he's still got game. Petrie's said to be very fond of him, so I'm nervous. I don't want a Jerome James style contract given to yet another declining PF. And not MLE, either. Nor do I want him to kill our draft chances with an extra 2 wins before bolting for a contract elsewhere. I want him to quietly take the rest of the year off.

Gooden is a very solid rebounder, which is something the Kings are lacking. We need to see him out on the floor and evaluate how it goes.
Gooden will certainy help. He will certainly help slow down Thompson's development.
And what will Gooden teach Hawes and Thompson?
To become a mediocre player like Abdur-Rahim?
And I don't think we even need Gooden for rebounding. We already have a double-double rebounders in Hawes and Thompson. That is no longer a problem with or without Gooden.

Damn. Was hoping he would take the year off, although given he is going to become a free agent that was probably too much to hope for.
And no, he's a mediocre 12 and 8 guy with a decided lack of saavy -- there is little he can teach the young bigs, both of whom are probably about 12 and 8 guys themselves already. All he can do is suck up JT's minutes and maybe help us hang on for a "victory" against the Clippers or something to threaten a draft spot. Also eliminate any chance at all for either Simmons of Diogu, and finish off those Greene minutes at PF.

Wouldn't that be considered cruel and unusual? To follow up the Kenny Thomas years then Mikki Moore years with Drew Gooden? Plus is Petrie's plan to acquire an entire team made up of only PFs?
I was so hoping they would just buy him out and cut him lose, hopefully this is only a tryout to get back on the Cavs.

Exactly! I'm not against the guy playing hard to get a new contract, but that's all it is, he's never been that passionate of a player, and I don't see that happening for now for any other reason than a new, big contract that he can retire with. I'll take Boozer in the off season over Gooden ANY day.

Yeah, I have to say nothing good really comes from this. My fear is that he will actually, like others pointed out, help us win a few more games. He has no future here and he's going to be stealing our kids' futures in the process.

Idk if he was actually "dissing" Shareef... I happen to agree with him. As much as he was a good guy, he was never a winner. Drew Gooden, besides at Kansas, has never been a winner either.
Neither is the type you pay big money to.

I don't think that he sucks, and I actually think that he could contribute for a playoff team that needs some help. I'm not a fan of his game, but he's not Mikki Moore (even Moore got signed by the C's).
I do think that he would be detrimental to our quest for the worst record in the league, seeing as how he's playing for a contract and all. I just don't want him playing for a contract here.

March 1st is the deadline for teams to add players for their playoff roster. And, if Gooden is claimed off waivers the rest of this years salary is picked up by the team that takes him. So, maybe he'll play today & Fri, to show that he's not injured, and get waived Fri.
Drew Gooden is a decent player. If we were still trying to plug our holes with mediocre to pretty good players than by all means, stick him into the starting rotation. But now, when there's no hope of making the playoffs, when he's not coming back next year anyway unless we pay to keep him (which we shouldn't, but probably will...) the best thing would be to just buy him out and let him go back to Cleveland. Further proof that the Kings front office just doesn't get it. We don't want 25 wins. That's not going to bring back the fans. We don't want 35 wins either. We want 50 wins and a real shot at a championship. Drew Gooden isn't bringing that to anyone. You'd think after Kenny Thomas, Shareef Abdur Rahim, and Mikki Moore they would have learned their lesson. You're simply not a serious contender with those guys in your starting lineup.
Cleveland would snatch him up in a heartbeat, wouldn't they?

Don't know why some people are so down on this guy. He is a decent player. He can rebound and before injuries, he was a double double guy. If we can resign him on the cheap ($4mil/yr), he would be a very solid player.
At some point we will need to put together a decent bench that will need to have some veterans. We can't alway be in rebuilding mood with all young guys.

The thing is, I smell an MLE with Drew, and I dont want us to keep pissing millions away on average players like him. There's no way he'll want less...and I'll pass thank you.
You know, this hoping and wishing that Gooden will be waived is getting silly. I don't care what some underthinking Yahoo columnist wrote, it's not going to happen. Gooden is with the team for the remainder of the year, he'll be playing hard because he's playing for a contract, and as long as he is healthy enough we will play him big minutes not only because he's playing for that contract, but because we're woefully thin at the big man spots.

I hear you. But that can happen within 2 yrs, depending on who we draft and if we can land a star though trades. We still have Kenny Thomas' contract as bait for next yr.
Again, only if we can sign him for cheap. If he wants $6mil+ then we let him walk. Only problem is GP might end up using the MLE to sign someone even worse to replace Gooden.

We theoretically won't have a MLE because we'll be under Cap, you only get MLE's if you're over CAP. Gooden will probably weasle his way onto the roster if you listen to all the media on his jock. He's a good player, but not 6mil + a year good as far as im concerned!

Everyone on this board was harping on the idea that we should trade Nocioni. if any team had remote interest (i.e. to Boston). Then in Game #2 as a King he displays talent, hustle and intensity like no one else on the Kings has shown in the first 50 games of the year.
We are so bad that a marginal talent like Nochi, wallowing on a sub 500 team shooting 40%, all of the sudden looks like our 2nd best player.
So with that in mind let's give an injured Drew Gooden a chance! He may very well display skills and post moves Hawes and JT can only dream about one day possessing.
He lost the ridiculous goatee, so he's off to a good start.
