Going To Baltimore Alone This Thanksgiving, What About You?

#1
I ordered my ticket this past Saturday night, total came out to be $333.90, which is a really good price considering I'm leaving this Tuesday until next Tuesday. I'll miss 3 days of school, which will suck since I'm still making up work from past absences.

It'll be interesting to be flying alone at the age of 16 to a far distance. I'm going to be flying with American Airlines. I live in Southern California. I have to stop in Dallas, Texas before I go get on a plane to go to Baltimore, MD. I'll be leaving Tuesday morning from LAX to DFW (Dallas, Texas). Then from DFW, I'll go to BWI (Baltimore, MD). I have to go through the same thing when I return.

I'm going to visit my cousin, he goes to medical school in Baltimore, and so he has a few days off during Thanksgiving. We'll probably just go sightseeing, and we'll most likely go to Washington, D.C. to see the White House and whatnot. Of course, we'll also play video games like we always do.

This should be a very fun experience. All of my family and relatives are going to San Diego cause we have family their, so it was a touhg choice for me to go or not.

When I return, I'll post what happened with many pictures.

What are you guys doing, or in my case, going for Thanksgiving?

Have a great trip!

I am flying from St Louis (after driving 2 hrs from my home) to Dallas and then on to Sacramento on Thanksgiving Day. My flight leaves early and, with the 2 hr time difference, I arrive about 1:30 (in plenty of time for dinner ;) ).

I will visit friends and am attending the Kings/T-wolves game at ARCO on Sunday. Return trip on Tuesday, and with the 2 hr drive, it may be midnight before I get home.

Take Pics Sixth!! ;)

xrzn: have a safe flight =) I went to NY alone and it was one LONG Flight! well not really.. but it was about 6+ hours.

Me? Our family has tons people coming over to celebrate with us. The padre is cooking the turkey (once again) and I get to set the table and play video games with my cousins haha..

I hope everyone has a good week and a Happy Thanksgiving!

=)

John's Hpokins, I presume?

Just go to Inner Harbor and eat lots of seafood. There's an awesome Indian resturaunt within walking distance of the harbor too, but you should find enough to eat right there.

First, have fun and travel safely everyone!

Me? Dinner with family, then home to sleep early to wake up before the roosters start roster-a-doodle-doing. Yes, you guessed it. I am, proudly one of those sit-in-a-line-in-the-cold-for-hours-waiting-in-line-for-the-stores-to-open-and-the-first-day-of-christmas-shopping-starts-people. :D

My parents from SoCal are coming up here on Wednesday. Then I'm leaving and going down to OC on Saturday for the Laker game on Sunday...then back home on Monday.

Everyone have a safe holiday.

The last time I was at the Inner Harbor, the first restaurant we saw was....
California Pizza Kitchen! :D

There's also a cool aquarium at the Inner Harbor, it's not big, but I never get tired of sharks swimming in circles around me!

There's Camden Yards (I think there are stores and arcades attached to the ball park but I'm not sure) and it's not far from the Inner Harbor.

You could spend all your time in D.C. for sure, there's so much to see!
Smithsonian Museums and others, the White House, the Congress buildings, the National Cemetery, Lincoln Memorial, Viet Nam Memorial Wall, Washington Memorial, just tons.....

If your cousin has a car, there's the Cheseapeake Bay and especially the Eastern Shore, really really cool! If the weather is good, you can go out on the bay in a boat it's so huge it makes the SF bay look like a puddle! LOL!

Ummm, what else? The Naval Academy in Annapolis is awesome, watch for it because you'll probably fly right over it on your way into BWI.

If you love seafood, you'll be very happy! Maryland blue crab is nothing like Dungeness that we have here in California, it's addicting after you get used to the difference in taste!

You're going to have a great time! Dallas is a big airport but you won't get lost, you will have plenty to see and do while you kill time waiting for your next flight and it's kind of nice to break up the sitting on the planes by being able to walk around for awhile. BWI is busy but not too big so your cousin will be able to find you easy!! If you can sleep on a plane, you'll be there in no time! I've flown that many times (but start from Sac.). You really did get a good deal for a holiday flight cross country! Enjoy your visit, I wish I was going too!! If the weather is bad, you might end up getting delayed out of BWI coming back so make sure you have a cell phone and a video game to ride it out!

For me, I either drive to spend time with family, or if I can get out of it, I'll be staying right here having Thanksgiving with great friends which would be a LOT more fun! :D But I'd rather be going to Maryland! I just procrastinated on the planning!

The Dallas airport sucks. If I here another beep beep, "excuse the cart please" I'm going to turn around and smack 'em. Anyone who's been to the Dallas airport knows what I'm talking about.

Been there. I know what you mean, although I think Chicago is worse.

Why? What did Thanksgiving ever do to you?? :D

So, anyway...what are you going to do Thursday? Enquiring minds want to know! :)

I hope you at least enjoy the time off work!
Well, I'm over the negativity now that I have plans. Now I am going to spend it with a longtime family friend and her 9 year-old son. I wasn't even going to ask her at first as I assumed she was driving off to see family as usual, but I did anyway, and it turns out they were just going to stay here this year. We'll just go out to a restaurant, probably Black Angus. Then last night another friend offered her home for Thanksgiving to all us 'strays' so I actually had two offers!

O'Hare is an interesting place. If you aren't in a hurry it's kind of funny to grab a beer and sit down and watch people. Everyone is running around to get their connecting flight and it's pretty much havoc. Now, if you are in a hurry it's miserable because more than likely your connecting flight is on the other side of the airport and it takes about 45 minutes to get there!!!!

Hallelujah, indeed!!

I am sorry, I didn't realize you didn't have plans and that's why you hated Thanksgiving.

FWIW, those of us who have obligations sometimes wish we DIDN'T have plans! :)

Maybe next year you could start planning early and take a survey of all your friends and co-workers who don't have family in town and offer to host a potluck get together, it could be really fun! And there's nothing easier to cook than a turkey for a main dish and let everyone else do the time-consuming side dishes and dessert. Or, you could volunteer at a homeless shelter serving meals or something (don't the Kings sponsor one of those too?)...or shoot, just indulge yourself and jet off to the Caribbean, or Italy or something if you really hate being in foggy Sacramento!

I'd offer to invite you to my West Coast family (you'd fit in better being a Bush fan) but then you'd REALLY wish you had no plans! :D

Enjoy your wonderful, nearly spontaneous, Thanksgiving (and be sure to give thanks for your wonderful friends!). Enjoy, enjoy!

KK!

I'm drooling over the thought of crab cakes. There's this place up in the 410 area code in northeastern Maryland right on the bay that has an outside terrace and they have a steel kettle band that plays every Saturday and Sunday. Do you know the name of the place I'm talking about? It's kind of famous. They have some of the best crab cakes ever. I wish I lived back east.

PS: Every time I've laid over in Dallas, I barely had enough time to make my connecting flight. There was one time in my whole life where I felt capable, if not eager, to kill someone with my bare hands. It was at the Dallas airport. Thre years later and my wife still brings it up every time the Dallas airport comes up in conversation.

Dang! I feel like I should know but I don't!! The best place in Maryland I've ever had crab cakes is a place called Kelsey's in Ellicott City...it's almost a ritual to get off the plane, collect the luggage and get me to Kelsey's ASAP for my fix!

I have one cousin who lives in Baltimore proper, the rest are a bit west of the city...spread through Howard County and Carroll County. One word of warning on the crab cakes though...never order Maryland crab cakes outside of Maryland! LOL! I have other family that lives in Pennsylvania and once when we went to a seafood restaurant in Pa. I ordered the crab cakes (even though I was warned not to order them outside the state of Md) and it was a big mistake! I don't know about D.C. because I heeded the first warning and I never order them anywhere but Maryland now!

God, it's bugging me about the restaurant you are referring too, I know I've never eaten there but it sounds familiar....410 area code covers the parts of Maryland where I have family but I suspect you're referring to someplace in Baltimore.

FWIW, I actually like Dallas (as far as airports go), if your flight's on time and you have an hour between connections it's cool...now Houston...that will make me scream and I do everything I can to avoid that connection...LOL! I think the last time I flew that trip my connection was through Phoenix (whew!) but because of bad weather we were re-routed in mid-flight to...you guessed it...Houston...I thought there was going to be an incident on the plane. I was like "Oh noooooooooooooooo".

So, what makes your wife bring up your Dallas incident 3 years later? And tell me the name of the restaurant you're talking about so I can go there next time I visit! I love Maryland blue crab and I love steel drums!

P.S. I'm not actually sure I'd want to live back East..it IS extremely beautiful and different but I was California born and raised. The weather is a little bit extreme for my tastes and have you heard about CICADAS? Yuck! I think about moving back East but I don't know that I have the survival skills for it! Rain in the summer, snow in the winter, lightning every 12 hours in the summer, humidity!!! It's nice to visit but I don't know about living there! :D

The resturaunt I'm thinking of is not in Baltimore proper. I believe it's in Cecil County or Kent County.

I actually lived in northern Delaware and I always had really good luck with the crab cakes there. There was a butcher shop just about a mile away from my home who hand-cracked the crabs daily and pressed his own cakes. I'd pick them up on my way home from work a few times a week. I guess you can ammend your rule to say don't buy them anywhere outside Maryland or Delaware!

Wife brings up the Dallas incident because I am normally a very laid back guy. It takes a LOT to anger me. Once I do anger, though, it's best to stay out of my way for a few days.

Keeping that in mind, there was a guy I spotted from across the terminal we were in pushing his way through the crowd. He was bumping people and not even saying "excuse me" to them. I thought to myself "He had better not do that to me or my family."

Sure enough, as we were getting on the escalator, my wife was holding my daughter in front of me and I was carrying my son behind her. This guy squeezes past me so he's in between my son and me and my daughter and wife. As he squeezed by me, he shoved my son a bit and again failed to acknowldege his rudeness.

Just as he was about to bump my wife and daughter, I grabbed his shoulder and calmly spoke into his ear "If you knock into my wife or daughter in front of you, I'll tear your throat out." Fortunatley he decided that he wasn't in such a rush after all and waited for my wife to step off the escalator. I'm glad he did, because I was fully prepared to follow through on my threat. I don't know what came over me - I've never felt quite like that any other time in my whole life.

I don't remember the sharks at the Baltimore aquarium, but the vision of the stingrays swimming 360 degrees around the place is still with me. I thought that was very impressive.

The New Orleans aquarium has a really cool shark display and I my I was lucky enough to have a front-row seat at feeding time. My kids went wild.

I've been to both DFW and O'Hare I have to say that the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport is the worst designed airport ever. Why, oh why, they thought that each terminal should be a 75 mile long half-circle is beyond me. Combine that with those damn carts and it is hell on earth.

I think when I was there last (2002?) the featured exhibit was "Planet of the Jellies" when they featured all the various types of jellyfish.

Probably, I remember the sharks because of a "'Three Stooges" kind of moment. :D

My cousin has four little boys age 5 and younger. I had one of her 8 mo. old twins on my back in a backpack, and her 3 y.o. in my arms (she had the other twin on her back and her 5 y.o. on the floor and in her arms , what were we THINKING??)....Anyway, we were on the 4th level (I think) and a shark bumped his nose against the glass directly in front of me, the 3 y.o. jerked back into my chin and I jerked back into the baby....BOOM, BONK, BAM ... in my defense (after we calmed the baby on my back) I assured the 3 y.o. that while it WAS scary to have a shark bump your foot (that shouldn't have been on the glass in the first place:eek: ...my bad, I didn't have enough experience with 3yo's) that we were all OKAY and the shark was behind the very thick glass ... it's probably why I remember the sharks more than you do! Terrifed three year old in front, screaming infant on your back!! "Prolly" worse than your escalator experience in Dallas!

I think I've only flown through Dallas to the East Coast one time in my travels but, honestly, I don't remember it as being as horrible as some of the E.C. connections I've been through...I freakin' hate Houston though...nasty dirty and generally uncomfortable! Oh well, I guess they're all worth it if it gets us where we wanna go.
