what the heck is going on??? is it just me or is every available quality free agent signed and the kings are just sitting on their hands... every notable free agent big man is gone... except ANTOINE WALKER!!!!

how can the kings get no one and lose mobley for nothing!!!! Swift and SAR gone for the MLE without nearly a peep from petrie... now unless petrie has something up his sleeves (trade) that no one sees coming, then i really think that petrie has fallen asleep on the kings and maloofs... if he thinks that this current team minus mobley, songaila and evans can contend then he is sadly mistaken...

our current roster as it stands...

PF Thomas/ Skinner
SF Peja/ Williamson
C Miller/ Ostertag
SG Martin/ Garcia
PG Bibby/ Jackson

the kings will be fighting for the 8th playoff spot with this group... i sure hope petrie has some magic to pull off a major trade... otherwise, petries genuis label can be replaced with a slacker label

Dude, chill. Just b/c we haven't signed a free agent its no big.

Of course I am from the small minority of fans that believe this team will go wherever Bibby, Peja, and Brad take it, no matter who we get at PF.

That's a relief

Keep in mind Geoff thinks in the long term, which means if our former era of goodness is over, then it'll be a while before we start contending for greatness. Right now, relative goodness would be pleasant as a fan, and even badness would result in high draft picks. As this franchise has always had winning the championship in mind, a year or two in the lottery wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for us.

There are lots of other threads discussing pretty much every that's been brought up in this "the sky is falling" thread...

Here's the Reader's Digest version:

1. Just because you haven't heard about anything, doesn't mean Petrie isn't doing anything.
2. Most people were aware that, because of severe money constraints, we most likely weren't going to make any major acquisitions via the free agency pool.
3. We may, as pointed out by others above, be facing a couple of years of rebuilding. It happens to every franchise.
4. Did I mention you not hearing anything may not actually mean nothing is happening?

Take a deep breath and relax. Your panicking is not going to change how Geoff Petrie chooses to operate. You either trust in his abilities or you don't.

I gotta agree with Sactownkid, i mean our lineup isnt that bad, in fact its pretty good, i mean this team finished the season pretty good for just being thrown together. I say give them a training camp and practice time together and they'll be fine, maybe like a 4 or 5 seed. We couldnt have been expecting to sign any big free agent because all we had was the mle, we'll probably end up getting evans back, barnes, and most likely songaila if the nets sign shareef. All I'm saying is, give this team a chance, they'll be pretty good next season.
 
While everyone is anxious to see who Petrie will acquire, let's not forget the players that Petrie LET GO to save this team from utter disaster:

Vlade: only 15 games last year averaging ~3 pts per game with a back problem, retiring or mentally retired already.

Christie: plantar fasciatis, stuck in the middle of nowhere in Orlando.

CWebb: a hobbled knee with another $60 million waiting...not a pretty sight for him nor for the Philly fans who will boo him unmercifully next year.

Sometimes it's easy for us to think Petrie isn't doing anything when he's not acquiring anyone but let's not forget how he had the foresight to let popular players go to SAVE THIS FRANCHISE. We should be grateful to have a GM with a long term vision and plan in mind...not like Isaiah Thomas and that goof owner from Cleveland who act swiftly and quickly but foolishly with no long term plan in mind.
 
the MLE excuse does not really stick as a defense... both SAR and Swift will be signing for the MLE with the nets and houston, respectively... obviously, only having the MLE did not prevent those teams from getting quality players....

i think my biggest concern is that the players that could of been had on the cheap (relatively speaking, MLE or sign and trade), i.e. SAR, Swift, Kwame Brown are all gone....

i think that the kings indecision has left the kings out in the cold... if the kings would have concentrated on one targeted player, i think the the kings could have got a pretty good player for the MLE or a sign and trade.... but by not focusing on one player, other teams have won over these other free agents... now for the kings to get a impact big man, they will probably have to trade one of the core players, bobby, bibby, peja or miller....
 
Just a we bit early for this thread don't ya think? I mean really folks before we burn Petrie's effige we might want to wait untill maybe the training camp roster or the FA singing date?

Players that could of been had on the cheap may actually have only been worth what they're being paid.

You don't know if it's indecision. You don't know if Petrie has a plan in place. You're acting like SAR or Swift or Kwame Brown was the singular answer to the Kings problems and that's simply not true. And they're not premiere players anyway. Especially not Brown, who has yet to approach anything close to expectations.

If we have to trade a core player, we trade a core player. It happens ALL the time. We don't need band aid solutions. We're rebuilding. It's not going to get all better over night.

You say "if only the Kings had concentrated on one player." Well, maybe they are. And maybe he's not on the free agent list. As I said above, Petrie's true skill is generally acknowledged to be in trades, not in the occasional lucky pick in the free agency pool.

Petrie has done too much for this team for us to give up on him now, if you think our current roster is bad, imagine what we would of had before Petrie and his trades.. Hes one of the best GM in the league, and he shouldnt have his hand forced to aquire players. Hell im starting to think we should keep the players we have and give them a full offseason to know each other, learn the system and build a chemistry rather judging on half a seasons play..
 
Look what happen when we traded for Miller that happen later in the summer remember. Maybe he letting the chips fall and is slow playing his hand sort of speak
 
Good analogy, Aleksandar. He could be standing at the edge of the room, letting the lower ranked players kock each other out of contention before he bothers to actually sit down at the table.

in the vein of the last two posts, i'd say that geoff petrie is the kinda guy who plays few hands. eventually, though, he gets dealt pocket aces, and flops a third. he draws everybody else in slowly with low-ball bets. then, when the pot's big enough, he raises. he never goes all-in, however, because he understands the danger of rash decision-making. his chip count increases, albeit very slowly. he's quiet enough at the table that you dont even notice how big his chip pile becomes. by the time ya do, he's got all your money.

Exactly right :)

Don't think that Petrie will make his move before the 22nd July. I wouldn't be surprised if he made the move well past that date.

IMHO, he will wait for the dust to settle and then he will make a move when no one expects him to. Thats his style ;)
 
Well we know he had interest in SAR and SAR obviously had other plans. Thats why most basketball GM's have other options in mind, and who's to say that 'Reef was even a first choice. He's out there looking at what would fit. And even though most of you think that Geoff Petrie has his Ph.D in Trading, I would argue that its more in finding talent, and the pieces to fit into a system.

Well lets hope he at least has a plan on who is going to get the MLE by then, because those players are going to be dropping fast.
 
at any rate, who actually--HONESTLY--believed the kings were gonna improve significantly thru free agency this off season?we traded webb for lesser players with lesser contracts, and since it happened, we've talked of endless scenarios in which some of those lesser pieces are packaged with much more familiar faces for one or more unfamiliar faces in the hopes of upgrading our areas of weakness. that's the only way this kings team is going to significantly improve. adding one player isnt gonna shift things in the kings favor, so if all we do with free agency is re-sign mo evans and/or darius songaila, then, imo, its no big deal. at least those two guys are known factors off the bench. why bring in an unknown who is not going to be enough on his own to significantly improve our areas of weakness? if no king is untouchable, then we'll see if the maloofs and geoff petrie really got the balls of steel to make a move or two that could be potentially upsetting to the fans. unless the kings wanna remain a middling, 50-win, first round (second round at best) drop-out, then i suggest the front office shakes things up. and who really knows what they're doing? the sac bee certainly dont. we like to think we know a little something, but petrie--when he plays--plays with the cards very close to his chest. he's a friggin puppeteer. as cool as they come. he twirls the media around on his little finger. he doesnt say enough to reveal his plan, but he says enough to keep people talking. while "they" talk, he pulls the strings, unnoticed. we may not agree with whatever comes out of this off season, but when its all said and done, GP will have done what he believed was best for the team. we may not agree, and we may very well be right in our criticisms, but i have no doubt that geoff petrie is doing his best to improve our team. he's making calls, pulling strings, but playing his hand conservatively. the team is fragile. "all-in" could break it.

Why do it seem like every year people say the same thing about Petrie. It seems like people would know his style by now. When hes not doing anything publicly thats usaully when hes up to something. He knows what hes doing I mean the man wasn't gm of the year all those times for nothing.
 
The current line-up is a 50 game winner. It'll make for a decent, sometimes exciting, regular season. But this team will not be a serious contender. Maybe the FO is planning for the future and we should get used to that notion.

Maybe this season, we'll develope the kids (Martin and Garcia). Then the following year make some noise.

I dunno. No one knows.

I'll just support the team and not have any expectations. That's the best way to go into the season as is. :)
 
It could be Petrie has been trying to make deals but nothing has carried all the way through. Just because free-agents signed somewhere else doesn't mean he isn't doing his job. Just about everyone has gone wher they were expected to go at this point. And Petrie has usually improved the club more through trades than free agency anyway.

Slow playing can dangerous in certain situations. Especially if the flop isn't dry :D

I have to wonder if Petrie's reputation has much to do with it. I mean, rightfully or not, people think you will always end up on the wrong side of the bargain if you pursue deals with Petrie. You'd certainly be wary :)

Just like Petrie said in that ^ article for the bee, one player isn't going to improve our team so lets just sit back, chill, and let him work.

^^^^ agreed. Just because the latest news out of the Kings camp has been cheerleader auditions, doesn't mean Petrie sittin' back smoking a big stoggy and watching them.
 
I'm afraid to think Petrie tried and failed rather than dropped the ball.

Frankly, the more I think about it - Petrie is victimized by the fact our players are not in demand. Thomas, Williamson and Skinner are all horribly overpaid tweeners. Miller is an undersized center, Stojakovic cannot make his own shot, Bibby is a real defensive liability, our off guards are unproven, Evans is undersized, and Jackson is a real health gamble. Our players have individual strengths too which is why we enjoy watching them, but because of our current roster makeup their weaknesses seem much more obvious.

Any of these guys would be made better playing with a great addition, and obviously it was a much better product to root for when we had our discarded vets. Still IMO our trade clout is zero now which makes grabbing a mid-level star increasingly unlikely. Does anyone really think we could beat the Suns, Spurs, Lakers, Clips, Rockets, Warriors, Mavs, Wolves or Rockets right now? Or the Griz?

Fifty games? I'd like to be wrong but it seems unlikely. Mostly because others are improving. The Clippers had huge injury woes last year, and the Lakers were horribly coached. If each isn't 41+ this year it'd be a big surprise.

The biggest Catch-22 of all, is that Petrie's only bait is Peja, and he is someone he seems intent on keeping in the tackle box forever
