The FREE 72oz. STEAK dinner is still flourishing at the Big Texan. More than 40,000 people have attempted to consume the Free 72oz. Steak dinner since 1960. About 7,000 have succeeded. People from all over the world continue to visit us to take the challenge and claim the bragging rights.

I would live off water and vitamins for three days just to leave no doubt.

A shame, too, that I couldn't have found a place like that when I was in my early twenties; when I was twenty-two, I could have killed one of those in 25 minutes, and then gone to Burger King and ordered a double Whopper with cheese...

I would like to see what that would look like piled up on one plate -- having a hard time picturing it (the steak, not the eggplant, although the eggplant oo I suppose ;) ).

Here you go:

And the caption with it says:

The venerable Amarillo institution, the Big Texan Steak Ranch, is now selling its 72-ounce steaks online. Cost: $99.95. Of course, you could get it for nothing -- if you visit the restaurant and eat the steak, a baked potato, salad, dinner roll and shrimp cocktail in an hour. More than 8,000 super-sized diners have.

That shrimp cocktail is the deal breaker for me.

I've been to places with similar deals and found that their steaks while big are usually pretty terrible compared to a smaller, well prepared one.

Bah; I'm one of those bloodthirsty carnivore types who's of the opinion that there's no such thing as a bad steak.

I mean, I'm sure that the law of averages dictates that I'll have one sooner or later, but it'd have to be flat-out gawdawful... And hell, even if a steak can't stand on its own, that's why God and Henderson William Brand invented A-1...

I'm really not a food snob, but A-1 wouldn't go anywhere near a steak I'd consider eating. And I do love my red meat. I just believe in eating something that can stand on its own, although I'm not immune to smothering it with pepper.

It's really a shame you two live at opposite sides of the country. I could see an interesting "Food Challenge" developing.

Anybody see that old John Candy movie "Great Outdoors" where he attempts to down a steak called "ol 98," as in ounces. I miss that guy.

That's 4 1/2 pounds of meat!
AND all the trimmings to go with it. You leave there hungry after eating that and there's something mighty wrong with you. You leave there walking at all and you should probably head straight to the emergency room.

Late teens, early twenties, I would have said that steak would be pretty easy for my brother to down, too. He'd be hungry again real soon, too.

6'5", ranging from 165' to 175" (depending on if he skipped a meal, I swear). He was an awe-inspiring, bottomless pit. I was surprised that my mother still managed to put aside money for her retirement. :p

On a family vacation, I once ate a 64-oz steak when I was sixteen, plus a fully loaded baked potato, plus half my sister's 13-oz ribeye when she said she "was so disgusted watching me eat that she couldn't eat any more."

I'm pretty sure I could've covered a 72-ouncer when I was younger... when my family went to the buffet, I'd close the place down... I used to get the John Pinette treatment.

yeah i hear bout stuff like this often. i was just commenting on the resturaunt name in this case. no matter where it's hosted, that people attempt to achieve this feat is disturbing personally.
