Underrated strategy play here. Bojan is not a bad plan B and offering Porter the max essentially guarantees us one of the two. And it's not actually that far of a step down in the medium term. Bojan can man the 3 until one of our guys matures.

Vlade is giving us two ways to win, no ways to lose.

I like that the Kings are meeting with Vince Carter.

Plan A should be Otto Porter.

Plan B could be signing guys like Carter, Randolph and Lawson to big money, 1 year deals.

Veteran leadership for one year and then even more caproom next offseason.

Of course, if a team wants to give away a first for the Kings to take a bad contract, that's a great option too.

If I'm Vlade I'd be bragging Rudy Gay up to Washington and working the double sign and trade angle. They end up with Rudy as a consolation prize and save a bunch of money. If they're on the fence about matching maybe this pushes them to the right side of it, and it doesn't cost us anything Rudy is gone anyways

This is too much of an immense step down, I'd be disappointed.

I truly hope that plan B is in fact the plan C, and there's other younger players involved for plan B.. I feel the same about Otto vs Bojan too, Bojan and Justin Jackson would consistently get torched on the perimeter by SF's with ball-skills and the West is loaded with those..

Rudy takes shots from Wall and Beal...that's a big no no. Porter got out of the way. Gay would do the opposite. Plus he is a cone on defense.
 
Bojan going to price himself out of our comfort level......if he played avg defense then maybe. But his one skill is not worth a 4 year deal at 16 per

The best possibility we would have is if Wizards want to preserve space for Boogie next summer. And Wall is convinced that his relationship with Cousins can facilitate the signing. They need something to sell to their fans and they need something to sell to Wall to get him to agree to the 4 year extension for 168M. But like I said Wizards are better keeping Otto and looking to clear space by trading Gortat. Mahimi contract is a killer. 3 / 48. That's a stinger and there will be no takers! Their path forward is adding Boogie. Eastern conference championship team (in theory) is Otto, Wall, Beal and Boogie. Only if the Wizards conclude this is impossible cap wise or with ownership consent would they move on from Otto. I saw on Wizards forum because the Kings can only offer 5% raises, that calculates out to:

Year 1 = $24,773,250
Year 2 = $26,011,913
Year 3 = $27,250,575
Year 4 = $28,551,171
TOTAL = $106,586,908

Let's assume these numbers are reversed to make it punitive on the Wizards. Same total, just instead of 5% raises, it is a 5% decline year to year.

Year 1 = $28,551,171
Year 2 = $27,250,575
Year 3 = $26,011,913
Year 4 = $24,773,250
TOTAL = $106,586,908

Now how about this: (1) The Kings acquire DeMarre Carroll from the Raptors and a future 1st. Raptors need to clear salary and we get a protected 1st for helping them out. Then they move those assets to WAS in a S&T for Otto. Unfortunately it is not ideal because Carroll contract runs two more years at 14.8M and 15.4. But look at savings with Caroll over Otto. In year 1, the savings is 13M and in year 2 the savings is almost 12M. This is money that can be applied to a Boogie max contract while they still get respectable production at the SF. Sadly, Caroll had a leg injury and doesn't seem to be player he once was. He is coming off bad season. This plan is unraveling already. :)

I was going to add the Raptors would be incentivized to help us to get Otto out of the East and clear the path for them to at least get the conference finals, but I doubt the Wizards are going to want Caroll. Hypothetically we could throw in future first from TOR and the rights to Justin Jackson or Malachi. That would give them two guys to cover Otto's minutes, along with Kelly Oubre, a future pick and give them room to chase Boogie. With the savings from Caroll trade and then assuming they can find a taker for Gortat 12.8M and 13.6M over 2 years at some time between now and end of next season they should have enough to make max offer to Boogie. Everyone is happy. We get our SF. The reunite their Kentucky connection. See that wasn't so hard now was it :)
 
I'm excited that the Kings made an offer.

Otto Porter is a repressed talent in Washington.

If he was just a 13-6 guy..the Wizards wouldn't be saying they'll match. Obviously his upward trend, his talent, efficiency, etc. are viewed as a good investment and at 24 doesn't appear he'll plateau as a 13-6 player. Will people laugh at Washington if they match the max or will it then make sense because they're keeping the boys together?

It's actually a perfect time to make the move. It's obviously an investment banking on his rise ala Harrison Barnes to Dallas.

If it doesnt work out his contract will be nearing an end around the time it comes to extending who we want to extend of our young guys. So he doesn't hamdcuff the team.

I hope it comes to fruition. If not, it's cool to see the Kings take a shot.

That declining contract is not legal, because the first year's salary is above Porter's maximum allowable salary. A declining contract would have to start at $24,773,250 and go down from there (which is obviously not happening.)

If the Wizards match on Otto these 5 players take up 95% of their cap. But here's their problem: They have NO money coming off cap next season. I am thinking about them thinking they want to position themselves to get Boogie. How do they do that with Otto in the fold? Is it even realistic? I think they can trade Morris (8.0M and 8.6M) but no one is going to take Mahini (16M 16M 16M) and the trade market for Gortat is anemic (12.8M and 13.6M). So what they are looking with Otto in year 2 plus what they are likely to have on their roster:

2018-19
Otto 26M
Beal 25.4
Wall 17.8
Mahini 16.0
Gortat 13.6

Total 98.8M

This is committed salary on conservative side (excluding another 10M between Smith, Oubre and Tomas) and assuming Morris can be traded and taking NO salary back. Big assumptions! Even if they did find taker for Gortat (questionable) they still do not have enough room to sign Boogie. Not even close! Boogie is going to be eligible for 30% of the cap which is a starting salary of 30M. To form a " Fantastic Four" and add Boogie they would have to find new home for Gortat and stretch Mahini. With these three guys Otto, Beal and Wall they are at 70M and a 30M starting salary to Boogie would take them right to the cap depending on where it goes next year (100-105M probably). The cap rate increases as leveled off so don't expect a big jump.

The bottom line in all this is that the Wizards can NOT match on a max offer to Otto and have a significant chance at Boogie without blowing up their roster. So we'll see if these variables weigh into what they do.....

the fact that Mahinmi is nearly making the same amount as their franchise player per season is hysterical and laughable. That GM is pitiful. Yet he has been their GM since 2003 >__>
