Breaking News: Fratello Fired
28th December, 2006 - 3:46 pm
Press Release -
Memphis Grizzlies President of Basketball Operations Jerry West announced today that Mike Fratello has been relieved of his head coaching duties.

Fratello led Memphis to a 95-83 record after he was hired on December 2, 2004 as the Grizzlies’ seventh head coach in team history. He led the Grizzlies to two postseason appearances, and became the franchise’s all-time winningest head coach in April. This season, Fratello led the Grizzlies to a 6-24 record.

“I’d like to thank Mike for the contributions he made to the Grizzlies organization,” said West. “He is a great coach and friend, and he did an outstanding job guiding this team to two playoff appearances in Memphis. We just felt it was time to make a change and move in a different direction based on our record and future goals. We wish Mike the best in his future endeavors.”

relieved of his duties. new coach anyone?

So far it's rather unanimous... no, thanks.

I wonder If Adelman is taking notice, or the slightest bit interested in the Griz job?

Its my opinion that hard A* coaches can only last so many years at one place in any sport. Eventually players will stop buying into a system when their pals on another team can do whatever they want and they are winning.

I think he's a good coach, however he hasn't changed with the new sports climate.

So, anyone suspect Adelman's phone just rang?

Supect it will just about every time somebody is fired from here on out. But hard to imagine Rick wanting to get involved in that mess, new cheap ownership, rebuilding etc. Maybe if he and Jerry West had a sitdown and West agreed not to retire for the next 5 years or some such (not that Jerry West has shown much in Memphis anyway -- kinda like the Geoff situation, maybe there are just quality GMs and then looking like a "genius" is situational).

Success with the Grizzlies is very relative. They've turned full circle this season, but considering them a playoff team before he got there was difficult.

New FA rules have prevented Logo from pulling off masterstroke signings though -- not that any superstar would willingly sign w/ Memphis... Maybe they can draft one w/ the 1st pick next year?

I am truly and honestly surprised he lasted this long... Unfortunately the Grizzlies' gain is probably sports broadcasting's loss. He'll probably go back to announcing games...
