Clippers Aim To Get Francis
July 2, 2007 - 3:54 amL.A. Times -
Moving to bolster the team at point guard, the Clippers are pursuing three-time All-Star Steve Francis, who could become a free agent this week, league and team sources said Sunday.

The Portland Trail Blazers , who acquired the eight-year veteran Thursday, are expected to buy out the final two years and $34.25 million of Francis' contract, freeing him to agree to terms elsewhere after he clears waivers. Teams cannot sign players until July 11.

General Manager Elgin Baylor and Coach Mike Dunleavy are also interested in Jason Hart, who joined the team late last season, and Brevin Knight, but Francis is potentially the team's highest-profile option.

The Clippers hope to sign Francis, 30, for a portion of the mid-level exception, reuniting him with his longtime friend, guard Cuttino Mobley. [

Yep, worked out most fortuitously for the Clips, and I wonder why when the Knicks were going to buy Francis out, it wasn't obvious that the Clips could be the destination then too. He and Mobley...there is almost something strange in that relationship. There is a big hole at PG, and Francis may not really be THAT done yet. Good fit all around.

What of Cassell?

I doubt Jason has any illusions of being the longtime starter there. He did well just getting himself back into the picture as a low level guaranteed contract guy there at the end of the year. One of the few things we did right last year was finally doing the courtesy thing there and letting him revitalize his career.

Why can the Blazers buy out a guy with a $42 million deal, and I've got to watch another year of Kenny Thomas shooting cannon balls at the rim from three feet away? Ugh.

Ah, but remember. Jason Hart was all full of himself about what a major contribution he had made to the Clippers. I just don't think his ego will take this very well...

Major contributor, my bu**. He was their savior. Just ask him. :p

Because the great god Naismith has a mean sense of humor?

if we trade bibby, i think we should make a run at francis, i don't think he's done i think he needs to be in the right situation.

Yeah, he'll go to LAC. He even stated in New York that if he were bought out he wanted to come to Houston but with our PG glut and Cat Mobley in LA, he has to go there. Plus, don't underestimate the Mobley thing. That dude had a serious man crush on Mobley, so serious it was just comical. When you say something "strange" about that relationship, that's an understatement.

Read Steve's quotes when Mobley got traded to the Kings, the guy sounded horrible. I know Steve and Cat were practically joined at the hip when they were in Houston and it was always a running joke but those Orlando quotes made you really wonder.

lol! whats wrong with francis, we could get him cheap not even full mid level, i'm just saying he's worth a look and if we swing a trade and trade off Mike bibby who are we going to depend on douby? too young no experience, unless we plan on losing alot of games and getting a nice draft pick i see what you mean by "yuck" you meant you want us to suck, or tank and hopefully get 1st overall pick for 08 gotcha;)

Stevie Francis is NOT worth a look, unless you don't ever want the kids to touch the ball again.

If we're committing to a rebuild, then we don't bring in someone like Steve Francis.

why does everyone think francis is a ball hog in orlando he did it cause he had to who else could score??? well i guess your right about the rebuild stuff, but i still think if he comes along we can nab him and if he doesn't pan out, we could package deal him in a trade or so.

Why? Because Little Stevie Franchise has been a ball-hog his entire career, that's why.

And we can't afford just to nab people with the idea of packaging him in a trade if he doesn't work out. If we did take him, and he didn't work out, just who do you think would be willing to trade for him? Portland just paid him $42 mil to LEAVE.

ball hog his entire career? come on man he had a good run in houston and like i mentioned b4 he didn't really ball hog until his magic run, and why? like i said b4 the magic lacked any real potent scorers, so he had to do it to get them going just like kobe of the lakers, don't get me wrong he's no kobe but he sometimes have to force and take unadvised shots because no one else on his team could or will make the shots that he will with a better stat, as for the risk, he's being bought out how much could he want? i am pretty sure he justs wants to play, and if, if, he wants all of the mid-level exception then we'll pass but if he doesn't let's sign him, even for a year to see what he has to offer then we'll go from there.

Are you his agent?

If we give the MLE to Steve Francis, I'm going to do horrible things to innocent forest creatures. Do you want that on your conscience?

WE DO NOT NEED an aging veteran with an ego bigger than the 6 outside Arco. Let the Clippers have him. Let him rejoin his friend Mobley.

VF21, man we never agree on one particular subject, wether it be, players trades or free agency, i never said give the whole mid-level to francis if he came at a discount, i would consider, but yeah for argument sake, i guess i could watch him play for the clips they could have him, and by the way i'am his agent and if he were to sign in sacramento, i would of offered you a free season pass lol!:D

Let me describe to you a typical Steve Francis possession.

1. Dribble the ball up the court. Hang out at the three point line, give your opponent a good stare while failing to shield the ball (turnover opportunity #1)

2.Then start to dribble around your defender but realize you cant and quickly try crossing him over. If you fail once try again. You can get up to 4 or 5 crossover attempts in an attempt to shake the defender. (turnover opportunity #2, he'll probably dribble it off his foot on accident after trying those crossovers)

3. Shot clock is down to 5 seconds.

4. Rudy T is going ballistic on the sidelines and screaming at him.

5. Steve hears a faint voice and somehow concludes that its time to throw up a 25 foot fadeaway 3 pointer. And there goes your possession.

Or alternatively, he gives the ball to Mobley who also turns it over in some manner.

Steve was a blast to watch and one of the most exciting guys in the NBA but the Rockets went no where with him. And yes, the ball hog moniker does fit him. He was terrible in houston when it came to the ball. You would just cringe when Steve went into his 1-5 I'll take em all on modes and watch as he just took the stupidest shots.

Cuz Paul Allen has about a trillion dollars? $42 mil is a dinner tip for him. :)
