Four-Team Trade On The Verge Of Completion

#1
The Hornets, Rockets, Pacers and Nets are on the verge of a four-team trade, according to a report from Chad Ford.
Darren Collison and James Posey would be sent to Indiana, Trevor Ariza would go to New Orleans, Courtney Lee would go to Houston, while New Jersey would receive Troy Murphy.
The deal is in the advanced stages, according to sources.

Courtney Lee for Trevor Ariza??? Really? I guess Houston wants the cap room.
Murphy is an ender... but none of the rest of them...

I think NJ gets the weakest end of it. Sure they get a 1 year ender Troy to provide depth with Favors and Lopez. But I think Lee was excellent for the value of his contract.

I dunno, on second thought, Troy could be used as a trade deadline piece for a contender.

A contender? To trade to a contender or to get a contender?

I doubt Trevor Ariza is gonna make CP3 stay.. NO are gonna get screwed if he still leaves which sounds likely, with giving up on Collison...but they gotta make thier move.

One would hope NO just tells CP3 to get bent. He got his payday and signed his deal... now play and quit your whining.

I'm not sure why Houston does this. I like the Martin-Ariza-Battier wing rotation more than a Martin-Battier-Lee(-Budinger?) rotation that features only one player who can guard the three.

Dumb trade for Houston. Decent for the Nets I guess. I like both the Hornets and Pacers (big Paul, Granger fan) and I like this deal for both of them. Indiana finalllllly gets a PG, and well Ariza is a nice addition to the Hornets starting lineup. Hard to judge whether they could've gotten more for Collison or not though

Very nice for Indy to get Collison for Murphy's expiring, and Posey's deal is not bad with only one additional year.

When I read the thread title, I hear Tony Soprano: "Oh, I didn't mean to verge."

Have they ever had a good point guard? Closest they got was Jamaal Tinsley.

I actually think its a good deal for Houston for a couple of reasons

1) gets rid of the log jam @ SF -- Houston has made it clear that they see Budinger as their SF of the future and his devolopment wasn't going to go well under Battier and Ariza

2) Kevin Martin is their SG -- a capable scorer coming off the bench who will be ready when/if Kevin goes down

3) $$$$ -- Houston has a lot of money vested in and with Aaron Brooks most likely going to demand a large payday -- they need to start cutting some of it and Ariza was the best candidate

4) Courtney Lee -- sure he had one bad year but the kid has shown lots of potential -- hell every perimter player last season had his #'s go down in NJ

The first thing I thought about was how Darren Collison would effect the emergence of Lance Stephenson as Tyreke 2.0 Hopefully he steals some back up PG minutes from TJ Ford... my second thought was lol what a slap in the face to Favors, and that I was kind of hoping that some how some way Murphy was going to end up in Denver. Kyle Lowy + Courtney Lee is a tough defensive unit behind Aaron Brooks and poor old Kevy. Maybe Courtney Lee can pick some stuff up from Battier.

The rockets have a strong all defensive lineup here : Lowry - Lee - Battier - Hayes - Yao. On offense they can run: Brooks - Martin - Battier (Budinger?) - Scola - Yao. That doesn't even include weapons like Larry Birdinger or hopefully Patrick Patterson.

TJ Ford was just bought out

Thats all it took to get Ariza? C'mon Petrie pick up the phone.
The "that's all" that NO gave up was the best talent in the whole trade to me. To take the place of Houston getting Lee, we'd have to at least give up Donte and I'd ask: why bother? Donte will be at least as good as Ariza soon.

I haven't seen much of Courtney Lee play, but it seems like Houston did not get good value back for Ariza.

edit: I think Indiana makes out like Bandits. Give up Troy Murphy to get Darren Collison? Yes!

I don't think it's so uneven. Lee doesn't do some things as well as Ariza, but he's more of a SG for a team with lots of SF's, cheaper, a little younger, and a better shooter. Ariza is a nice roleplayer who has become overrated. For the type of player he is, you'd like to see better shooting percentages. If he was as good as some seem to think, he wouldn't already be on his fifth team.

By far. For everyone else it ranges from a lateral move to a questionable one, but Indy got a very promising 2nd year PG for a guy who had no future with the team.

It wasnt equal value at all. This was a salary dump to get closer to getting under the luxury tax threshold. This saved Houston roughly 10 million dollars this year (5 million dollars of Ariza salary plus 5 million in tax money) .

That said, Lee and Ariza dont even play the same position so its a bit harder to judge. Also the difference isnt that large and considering the money they save, I can definitely understand the logic.

Hornets make yet another short-sighted, poor move. As a hornet fan, I am pissed with how this team is running itself into the ground and killing their future. They have already wasted CP's prime, and he will be gone in two years. Now they will have no franchise player, nothing to show for Collison but a role player who they will attempt to trade at the end of his deal once Paul leaves, and will be watching a 20/10 PG that they gave away. Nice job idiots.

My thoughts exactly.

Wait till you watch Mr. King of inefficiency, Trevor Ariza. 14 shots to make 15 points a game on 39% shooting.

Enjoy watching him brick a bunch of 3s and turn over the ball with his complete lack of ball skills.

On the bright side, he's an above average defender. (but then again so was Posey)

Lastly, Ariza is probably one of the most unlikeable players I've seen in a while. Not because he's out committing crimes but he seriously is incapable of smiling. He'll throw one down on someone and his mouth will literally be a straight line. I'm not sure he's capable of emotion. Certainly I'm hard pressed to think of an example of him smiling or acting like a non zombie.

I'm still bitter that he had to leave LA because he actually fit in here. He let his newbie agent F that up (passive zombie decision). He's got a couple of strong indications (his last two stops) that he's best suited as a complimentary player, not a focal point. We'll see if Paul helps deflect some pressure from him. God knows Ariza won't have the ball in his hands there except for when Chris passes it to him.

I think he'll be much better in New Orleans than he was in Houston.

Ariza is a very nice piece for NO. The guy is a an excellent player - a difference maker - and so far none of those other players in the trade are difference makers. Maybe one day Collison gets to that level, but not now. So NO unloads a redundant small and and gets a wing who is a very well rounded player. If CP3 goes down with an injury like last year, sure it will hurt. But who cares? They aren't going anywhere if he goes down with an injury regardless. NO has to go for it now and not anticipate they will lose CP3. Otherwise, it becomes a self-fullfilling prediction.

Collison will help Indiana down the line.

The other players don't send me one way or another.
