I have been a Kings fan since relocating here in 1990 and have witnessed the good times and bad. To all the naysayers regarding the drafting of Spencer Hawes, consider a few things, please. The kid is 19 years old, 7 feet tall, and extremely gifted. How many seven-footers who were in the draft are ambidextrous? None. Hawes' skills cannot even be compared with the likes of Brad Miller, Joe Kleine, etc. He has an effective back-to-the-basket game that, to my surprise, has not been compared to that of another near-seven-footer who played in the 1970s and '80s. Many of us may recall this lanky red-haired athlete who was a truly gifted and skilled passer, shot with either hand, and had the fire of a champion. He came out of UCLA, and had an injury-shortened career, but truly made his mark with the Portland Trail Blazers and is currently an analyst for a major network: You guessed it, Bill Walton. Give this kid a chance, and he may be a pleasant surprise to all of you who are so anxious to spell doom and gloom for the Kings.
