"Rod Thorn, the Nets' president, said yesterday that while the team had not been active in pursuing a deal since free agency began on Saturday, (the Nets) might be interested in a shooter, perhaps the New Orleans Hornets' Rasual Butler, if the price was right."

"Memphis center Lorenzen Wright and Toronto guard Mike James, both unrestricted free agents, are scheduled to meet with Wolves representatives in the next few days in Las Vegas. The team's summer league entry begins play tonight at the Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus."
"(Lorenzen) Wright recently told the Memphis Commercial Appeal he was seeking at least a three-year contract."

"(Mike) James, 31, has been mentioned for weeks as a player the Wolves might pursue. The 6-2 guard averaged 20.3 points and 5.8 assists for the Raptors, while hitting 44.2 percent of his three-point shots (fourth in the league)."

http://www.startribune.com/511/story/534972.html "The Washington Wizards have emerged among three suitors as perhaps the front-runner for shooting guard DeShawn Stevenson, who started all 82 games for the Orlando Magic last season. Rob Pelinka, Stevenson's agent, told the Sentinel on Wednesday that three teams other than the Magic are in the hunt, and two have made offers."

"The Stevenson camp expects a third offer later this week. Pelinka said he could not divulge the interested teams, but an Eastern Conference executive told the Sentinel that the Wizards are one of the clubs. Pelinka had no further comment."

"The offers for Stevenson from the other clubs apparently are better than anything the Magic have brought to the table so far. Teams can sign free agents starting next Wednesday. A key sticking point for Stevenson is the number of years in the offer."

"Pelinka wants Stevenson to make at least $4.5 million to start and a longer deal, perhaps five years. Asked if there was wiggle room, Smith said, "Not much wiggle."

"Smith also is trying to re-sign free-agent forward Trevor Ariza, and that's becoming more difficult than the Magic imagined. At least six teams have expressed interest."

"The Pacers are interested in acquiring former Pacer Al Harrington from the Atlanta Hawks. The Pacers also have the midlevel exception of around $5 million and the bi-annual exception of about $1.7 million to use to try to sign free agents."

"Team insiders have said that the Hornets are working on one last trade that involves disgruntled guard Arvydas Macijauskas as well as one last free-agent signing. Both moves are expected to be completed by next week." Oklahoman

I think Stevenson would be a nice fit for the Wiz..watched the Magic regularily through-out the season. He's tough, good defender, good mid-range shooter, very good slasher, athletic, can handle the ball. I remember he hit like, 6-8 shots in a row against the Wiz in the 2nd half of the season. All mid-range jumpers, was quite a display.

Hornets should be done by next week then. :p

"Talks continue between the Nuggets and Williams Phillips, agent for free-agent guard Bonzi Wells, who likely would have to be acquired in a sign-and-trade. Phillips declined comment other to reiterate Denver's interest." Rocky Mountain News

"Calvin Andrews, agent for Denver restricted free-agent center Francisco Elson, said four teams he wouldn't name have interest in Elson, but "the Nuggets are No. 1." Andrews said talks will speed when Elson returns this weekend from the Netherlands, his native country." Rocky Mountain News

"Atlanta Hawks free-agent forward Al Harrington told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Warriors, along with Indiana, were the two teams in heaviest pursuit of his services. The Warriors also are known to have contacted Jeff Fried, the agent of Seattle free-agent power forward Chris Wilcox, to express their interest." Contra Costa Times

"The Warriors' interest in those players not only illustrates the team's desire to get more athletic on the frontline, it also underscores that they're shopping power forward Troy Murphy, the team's most attractive-but-expendable player. Harrington and Wilcox are power forwards, though Harrington has the skills to play small forward. Both are athletic specimens who can run the floor and finish above the rim, a contrast to Murphy's methodical, perimeter-shooting attack." Contra Costa Times

"Contrary to various reports, the Sonics are not interested in guard Doug Christie, a Seattle native, who suffered a season-ending left ankle injury early last season with Dallas. The 36-year-old former Rainier Beach standout is reportedly considering a comeback." Seattle Times

"Negotiations between the Washington Wizards and restricted free agent Jared Jeffries have reached an impasse and no new negotiations are scheduled, according to Jeffries' agent. "I would characterize the talks as both sides making an effort, but as of today it looks as if those efforts have been futile," agent Andy Miller said yesterday." Washington Times

Andy Miller: " 'We have spoken frequently. Jared likes Washington and the role that he has carved out there. The problem is because he is selfless and sacrifices for everyone on the team and does the intangibles, it's unfortunate but the role seems to be one not as valued as much as he would like." Washington Times

"Jeffries' worth to the team is the apparent sticking point. The Wizards' position appears to be that while Jeffries played an important role -- one in which he started 77 games and averaged 6.4 points and 4.9 rebounds -- they have no intentions of overpaying him. As a restricted free agent the Wizards can match any offer Jeffries receives." Washington Times

"The Wizards, at least for now, don't appear to be interested in doing a sign-and-trade, despite that fact that Philadelphia and Phoenix are believed to have approached the Wizards, who already have tendered Jeffries the required one-year qualifying offer." Washington Times

The Trail Blazers want to trade Darius Miles. In equally shocking news, some tourists visited Manhattan yesterday... The Mavericks are not going to keep assistant coach Charlie Parker, but no word on if they're re-signing Duke Ellington or Miles Davis... How's this for an NBA All-Star Weekend event: Darius Songaila, Brian Cardinal, Matt Bonner and Brian Scalabrine play a best-of-20 series of two-on-two games... The Hornets decided they have no problem overpaying a few guys if it means pushing them into the playoffs. That's their strategy and even if it's not the right way to go, I applaud their efforts. Same for Chicago. The Bulls are overpaying Ben Wallace, but they're a force, now. People are thinking about the Bulls. They're making things happen... I'm about to take action, myself. I'll be ordering Pad Thai noodles from a delicious local Thai restaurant, right after I finish the commentary... Teams that want to pay players what they're actually worth by NBA standards are at a disadvantage, because there's almost always another team willing to overpay by $10 or $20 million. I personally feel overpaid a bit. I make over $47 million a year editing this website and feel I'm probably being overpaid by at least five dollars... Jared Jeffries can run around and do the little things. Often, player who do the little things do so because they can't do the big things. But I like Jared's game and I think he's the kind of player who makes teams win. But he hasn't earned a sizable payday, yet... JR Smith can jump high and stuff... Hit InsideHoops.com every day all summer, just like you do during the season.

"Even if the Magic can keep Stevenson, they are expected to sign another guard. They have courted Kareem Rush, who played for the Charlotte Bobcats last season. The Bobcats waived him in April, citing attitude problems. But Smith said he was comfortable with Rush after meeting with him and his agent in Los Angeles recently." Orlando Sentinel

"Their contract talks with DeShawn Stevenson at a stalemate, the Orlando Magic have set their sights on other free-agent shooting guards. The Magic have held serious discussions with 3-point sharpshooter Kareem Rush, and Orlando could be close to agreeing to a deal with the four-year NBA veteran, general manager Otis Smith said." Florida Today

"Smith met Sunday with Stevenson and agent Rob Pelinka in Los Angeles, and Smith said he increased his original offer. But there has been little progress the past week." Florida Today

"I like DeShawn a lot, but within reason," Smith said. "I'm not going to overspend for a guy who in my mind his salary slot was perfect for him. I do understand he and his agent's thought process, but if we're going to make a deal, it has to be reasonable for both sides. I'm about being fair. If we can't be fair, you're going to have to find what you're looking for somewhere else." Florida Today

"Smith (Orlando Magic) has talked to the agents for Cleveland's Flip Murray, New Orleans/Oklahoma City's Rasual Butler and Rush in the past week. Orlando was next-to-last in the NBA in 3-pointers made last season, hence the focus on finding outside shooters." Florida Today

"Smith admitted he had a brief discussion with agent Arn Tellem last week about Ben Wallace's rumored desire to return to Orlando. Wallace, a rising star during his one season in Orlando in 1999-2000, ultimately agreed to a four-year, $60 million deal with the Chicago Bulls." Florida Today

"Mike James, the Rockets' primary free agent target, has postponed his decision about where he would play next season until Monday, James' agent Bill Duffy said. (Mike) James is choosing between offers from the Rockets, Mavericks and Timberwolves, all above the salary cap and limited to offering the mid-level exception unless they can reach agreement with the Toronto Raptors on a sign-and-trade deal. James chose to wait until Monday when he is scheduled to meet with Mavericks coach Avery Johnson." Houston Chronicle

"Duffy said James initially considered the Rockets the front-runner but now is torn between the interest all three teams have shown." Houston Chronicle

"Duffy said there is "ongoing dialogue" about a sign-and-trade arrangement with the Raptors. That would allow teams to pay more than the mid-level exception, expected to begin at about $5 million, but there are do not seem to be many players with appropriate contracts that would interest the Raptors." Houston Chronicle

"The Wolves met with free-agent point guard Mike James on Thursday night, but it is believed they did not make a formal contract offer." St. Paul Pioneer Press

"While (Reggie) Evans is waiting patiently on what the Nuggets might do, Minnesota is taking a long look at him. Indications are Nuggets free-agent guard DerMarr Johnson has a decent chance of returning." Rocky Mountain News

Man, I didn't really think about the Magic for Ben... imagine this:

Jameer Nelson/Arroyo
Redick-FA shooter/Dooling
Hedo/Trevor Ariza
Dwight Howard/Darko Milicic
Ben Wallace/Tony Battie

I'd like the Magic even more too ;).

Wolves getting Evans would give them that rebounder to help out KG they've wanted for awhile now.

"The Bulls waived veteran forward Othella Harrington on Friday. Harrington, 32, spent the last two of his 10 NBA seasons with the Bulls and averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 142 games. He was one of the Bulls' captains last season and had been set to earn $3,867,500 next season."

"With Harrington's salary off the books, the Bulls might be able to re-sign free-agent forward Darius Songaila. Mark Bartelstein, Songaila's agent, said Tuesday that Songaila has drawn interest from several teams and that Bartelstein has had frequent conversations with Bulls general manager John Paxson."

"Songaila is likely looking to at least double his $2.5million salary from last season on a four- or five-year contract."

A source close to the Bulls disputed published reports that the Bulls are interested in acquiring Seattle restricted free agent Chris Wilcox. The source said the Bulls have no interest in the 6-10 power forward." Chicago Tribune

"However, word is the Raptors are going hard after veteran swingman Anthony Parker, who has spent the past few seasons starring for Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he won the Euroleague MVP award twice." Toronto Sun

"With Mike James talking with teams and now out of the (Toronto) picture, Colangelo is looking for an athletic shooting guard/small forward and Parker, 31, would fit that bill beautifully. A former first-round draft pick (21st overall by the New Jersey Nets) in 1997, Parker has been touted by many for years to be the best player outside the NBA." Toronto Sun

"Four other NBA squads reportedly are going after Parker, including the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers, but Toronto is said to have the upper hand given the fact that the Raps have sufficient cap room and the team's new assistant GM, Maurizio Gherardini, has such extensive contacts in Europe. Parker is said to be asking for $10-12 million over three years. His agent, Henry Thomas, who also represents Chris Bosh, did not return phone calls yesterday." Toronto Sun

"The other player Colangelo is said to be close to agreeing to terms with is Spanish forward Jorge Garbajosa, although that certainly isn't a newsflash at this point." Toronto Sun

Bulls need any front-court offense they can get... Ben Wallace/Ty Thomas/PJ Brown isn't exactly prolific offensively. ;)

So, looks like the Wilcox to Bulls stuff isn't much.

"The interest in Salmons may mean the Raptors have cooled on the idea of signing former Phoenix guard Eddie House."

"Toronto remains, however, committed to bringing in the 6-foot-7 forward (Jorge) Garbajosa and the 6-foot-5 guard-forward (Anthony) Parker when they can announce signings today."

"Also, King - unable to comment until today - all but finalized an agreement with Sixers restricted free-agent guard Willie Green. The deal is said to be similar to the 5-year, $17 million package (4 years, plus an option) offered last summer, then withdrawn when he suffered a knee injury. One apparent difference is that now Green must achieve certain goals to have various salary increments guaranteed."

"Sixers restricted free agent Shavlik Randolph also was expected to join today's rookie/free-agent camp session at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, having agreed the other day to a 2-year deal thought to be worth a little more than $2 million. Former La Salle University star Steven Smith, an undrafted rookie, also was expected to work out after spending several days with Golden State in the Las Vegas summer league."

"With Tuesday’s announcement that James is off the free agent board, the Mavs will turn their attention to other prospects, including Bonzi Wells, Reggie Evans, Jumaine Jones and DeShawn Stevenson."

Obviously Bonzi/Stevenson/Ju. Jones aren't options for the Mavs with Howard/Stackhouse/Buckner/Ager/Croshere all on the roster. Would hate to see them get Ju. Jones, who is the most realistic for them to get. Two of the choices in the way of replacing Bonzi's experience, gone to the Mavs.

Neither was Chandler + the scrub of the month, but they still made the playoffs. They'll go wherever they go because of defense this time out.

Well, that's quite obvious, Brick. I love the Bulls, just was saying they have very little front-court offense right now. Looking at both sides of the situation back at the original time when the deals were going on for the Bulls.

WHY ben wallace back on the magic? they got a man child in howard. they don't need wallace.

Ben would of played at center of course.

Why? Team on the rise (like the Bulls), and ready to make a playoff run. Which they indeed will, I'd be shocked if they don't.

I really want a Heat/Magic playoff series next year, too. :)

"Karl sounds as if he also will miss Elson, whose offer sheet is believed to be worth $6 million for two years. Karl said Elson will "have to be replaced" and it will be "difficult." He said the offer sheet is "a dangerous number for us to match."

Actually, Elson can do more than shoot the j. He's athletic, brings energy, is a good rebounder, defends well in the post, and can block shots. Tall at 7'/6'11", not too thin. Had he gotten regular/consistent minutes in Denver he'd be more productive than he has. He's also played well in most of the 47 starts this past season when Camby or Martin were out.

Elson is a decent backup center, he has gotten better in the 3 years he has been with the Nuggets and is a good signing for a team that needs centers. In the Spurs case, he can start because Tim Duncan's there next to him.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?statsId=3364

Definitely be one of my top choices for back-up center, and would take him anytime over Vitaly Potapenko. Especially behind Brad Miller. Looks like he'll go to the Spurs though. So, have to go after one of the handful of other decent back-up Cs out there that can be had for part of the MLE or maybe LLE.

"Having reached long-term contract agreements with star forward Carmelo Anthony and power forward Nene, the Nuggets must address their biggest weakness: perimeter shooting. Player personnel director Mark Warkentien said Friday that the team is evaluating all options - free agency, trades, sign-and-trades and internal candidates - as a means to that end."

"The Nuggets have expressed interest in Eddie House, Jumaine Jones, Ronald Murray, Janerro Pargo and Bonzi Wells. Wells, who is in negotiations to return to the Sacramento Kings, is considered the best of the bunch, but the Nuggets probably would have to work a sign-and-trade because they have only their $5.2 million midlevel exception to offer."

"The Kings reportedly have offered Wells a five-year deal worth $36 million. "Probably the most expensive way to do it is free agents," Warkentien said. "That's an oxymoron - free agent."

"A much more economical option (for the Nuggets) might be Casey Jacobsen, who averaged 16.4 points on 54 percent shooting for Denver's summer league team in Las Vegas."

"While a decision on Jacobsen is probably several weeks down the road, the Nuggets must decide whether to match a two-year, $6 million offer sheet given to free-agent center Francisco Elson by the San Antonio Spurs."

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/nba/article/0,2777,DRMN_23922_4846734,00.html

So, if they need outside shooting why go after Bonzi? Sure he's the best player of the bunch, but he isn't a consistent jumpshooter, and jumpshots are not a main part of Bonzi's game.

Denver, with the Bonzi situation, almost seems like a kid who keeps poking you to get attention but most of the time you don't want to focus on them. ;)

House/Jones/Pargo/Jacobsen would definitely be better fits. Instead of just having one outside shooter on the team from one of those four, since Buckner left - they should get a swingman shooter and a small guard shooter. The SG/SF to start, the small guard off the bench.

"If the Nuggets keep Elson, the Spurs would have about $3 million left to pursue another big man. Memphis' Lorenzen Wright, Indiana's Scot Pollard, Charlotte's Melvin Ely and Jake Voskuhl, Toronto's Loren Woods and Boston's Michael Olowokandi are among the remaining free-agent centers."

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/stories/MYSA072006.1C.BKNspurs.butler.149b37d.html

Thankfully if that happens the Spurs can only get one of Wright/Cato/Ely/Olowokandi. :)

"One free-agent forward who might interest the Knicks is rugged Denver rebounder Reggie Evans, but he might impede the development of second-year Knicks forwards Channing Frye and David Lee, which is a priority for Thomas."

"The Cavs are also looking for an additional big man, regardless of whether they are able to come to terms with Gooden. Alan Henderson, who averaged 2.5 points and 2.7 rebounds in 51 games last season, is in the mix. Henderson said both sides left the door open about a return."

I'd really like us to go after Loren Woods. He does a lot of what we need and is pretty dang athletic for a 7 footer.

I'm not sold on Woods... when I've seen him he hasn't been much, and haven't heard or read much about him. Think we can do much better than him, and there are better options out there.

"His absence will leave the Nets with a front line of Jason Collins, Nenad Krstic and Cliff Robinson, a free agent who is expected to re-sign as early as today when he takes a physical."

"That may prompt the Nets to sign a player from a free-agent class that has not impressed them. The frontcourt players who could interest the Nets include Melvin Ely, Lorenzen Wright and Reggie Evans. The Nets were wary about spending money this summer after signing free agents last year who did not live up to expectations."

"George's signing gives the Mavericks 14 roster players. The number should grow. (The Mavericks have) agreed on a one-year contract with a team option for undrafted rookie Pops Mensah-Bonsu if he passes a physical this week, Nelson said. The 6-9 George Washington product was impressive with the Mavericks summer league team."

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...mavs/stories/080206dnspomavslede.44b8add.html

Nice to see he got signed somewhere, I liked him in college. I'd say he replaces Josh Powell. He's an athletic freak, easily one of the top 5 athletes in the 2006 rookie class.

Pops looked real good in both summer leagues. I was really impressed with his play. All out hustle all the time.

Well, there just doesn't seem to be much money floating around out there. And he'd probably make more money over there.

A lot of quality guys still out there for sure.

Its possible Jones is being held up by the Bonzi situation -- most teams looking for a SG/SF likely have Bonzi for the MLE as a possibility and may not want to cash out with Jones until they are sure they can't get the better guy. Meanwhile Jumaine himself may also be looking for more $$ than are likely to be out there until he's the best thing left.

Rockets could use a guy like Jones to bolster their average/weak bench, which has no true small foward off of it. Jones would also improve their offense to some degree, which they didn't really address much. Pretty sure they still have their MLE and LLE.

Good point on the Bonzi situation.

Guard Derek Anderson, the only player on the active roster not to see action for the Heat in the NBA Finals, was waived Tuesday.

Anderson, who in late June invoked his $2.5 million option clause for the coming season, completed buyout talks Tuesday and will be free by week's end to sign with the team of his choice.

Anderson was acquired at last February's trading deadline from Houston in exchange for rookie point guard Gerald Fitch. The Heat had hoped the 32-year-old would mesh with its veteran core, but the 6-foot-5 guard struggled in his limited role.

Anderson is the first player from last season's final 15-player roster to have his ties severed from the NBA champion.

The Heat continues to talk with veteran swingman Shandon Anderson, its lone remaining free agent. Thirteen of last season's players are already under guaranteed contract for 2006-07.

Training camp opens Oct. 3, with the regular season opening Oct. 31.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-heat091106,0,3176515.story?coll=sfla-sports-front

I didn't really see DA coming back to the Heat. Nice that he got a ring after a few tries and ambitions with the Spurs/Blazers/Rockets, though.

I think Heat are going to have Dorell Wright see some game minutes this season rather than just garbage time and being inactive.

Shandon Anderson would be fine to have around as a veteran team-guy and extra wing-player, like last season. Had some solid games off the bench in the playoffs. Won't matter if they don't bring him back though.

I didn't say that they were title contenders. But that's what those teams (obviously during specific years for the Blazers, not all of the years he was with them) were trying and aiming to do.
