Everybody Needs To Calm Down (merged)

My beef with this move is that it doesn't make the Kings any better and it also doesn't keep them where they were last season. It's a step backwards, a pretty big one in my eyes. Not like losing a franchise player, but Bonzi was important to this team and we're going from him to John Salmons. Imagine last season with Salmons instead of Bonzi.

Petrie better get on his Trading Horse and ride until that horse can't ride no more.

K...I'm imagining a first-round exit to the San Antonio Spurs. We lose in 5. Jason Hart doesn't see the floor...

I think Bonzi helped us win more than 3 games. It's fair to say that last years team-and I do hope you remember how aweful it was in the first half- wouldn't have been within any sort of distance of making the playoffs without Bonzi.

You should actually check out some of his game stats from last year with philly. When given a decent amount of minutes, he actually put up some good numbers as a point guard. I think he could be a nice fit for this team. Kinda of reminds me of a marquis daniel's type but maybe not as athletic.

I would rather listen to the fans that seen him play then the stats. Prime example is when the Nbadraft.net said brad miller based on his stats was earning the money he was getting. But if you watched the games he was not.

Why not compromise and at least wait until you've seen him play as a King before you pass judgment?

;)

Because then we would have nothing to argue about!:D

Really, I am 100% agreement with you on this - Give the kid a chance before we decide he can't help us.

Ok here is a little bit of the skinny on Salmons. I believe we got him as our backup PG. Phx was wanting him and he didn't accept so they got Banks and Toronto wanted him to replace Banks. Now for the real skinny.

AI missed 8 games last year not counting the last 2. In those 8 games Salmons started at the point guard position. here are his stats from the point
15pts 5reb 7ast 1stl shooting 45% He had 3 double doubles and flirted with 2 triple doubles when starting at the pg position. Now some ppl wanted a true ball handling backup pg well my friends here you go. his assist starting at point went like this 7 6 4 5 3 10 12 8 take it for what its worth but that kind of ball handling and distribution skills coming from 3 different positions is pretty good at 6-6 210 pounds he is no tween pg or sg

O snap- See thats the kind of thing that will get the haters turning...very very good work ent.

I'm actually excited about JS playing the point. The way the game is being officiated now, players like Salmons are becoming more important. It's hard losing Bonzi, but I think that this team will be just as competitive without him. Bonzi had a phenominal series against the Spurs and played out of his mind. Too many times fans rely on their short term memory and with Bonzi that was the SA series. To think that he would be able to be that same player for an entire season is absurd. Still, he would have been a great asset for the team, but we have to move on. It is now Martin's time to step up and become one of our primary weapons and I for one think that he will do a great job. I also don't think that GP is done and I'm still holding out hope for either trading for Magloire and picking up either Cato or Ely for the LLE. Looking at JS's stats don't tell the whole story. He played with the biggest ball hog the NBA has seen in quite some time. Last year, I'm sure that Suns fans were saying the same things about Boris Diaw as those being said on this board about JS when they got him for Joe Johnson and look what happened. Diaw came to a different system and different style and flourished and who's to say that JS won't do the same. We need to all take a deep breath and relax.

^That's actually a very good point. Guys who can drive and finish around the hoop are more valuable than ever, and that's one of Salmons' strengths. Maybe that's why people started throwing money at him.

ballhogs dont average 7.4 assists per game

If Brian Colangelo wanted him in Toronto and GP obviously wanted him then I'm on board with it. If any 2 guys know basketball talent it's those two. It's not as if Isiah and Elgin Baylor were knocking on his door.

I am taking him with the same kind of game as Garcia except instead of 3pt shooting he drives the lane. rebounds and ball handling and passing about the same. Best part is he isn't restricted to one position much like Garcia. so depends on what we need at the time do we need a guy dropping 3's hadnling the ball or do we need a guy driving hard to the hole and pounding his 6-6 210 body against smaller guards while taking the point guard duties.

Stats do not tell the truth. If you don't think that AI is a major ball hog then I have no idea what you have been watching. KT said it best after the Webber trade. With respect to leaving Philly KT said something along the lines of the offense was 4 guys standing around watching 1 guy dribble, dribble, dribble, shoot.

And since Billy King DIDN'T want him you have the good-endorsement trifecta.

Nice find. I of course question the value of chery picked stats but when we combine them with the interesting fact that 2 other teams noted for hunting down quality PG's made prety high offers it does raise more than a possiblity that JS might be able to reinvent himself as a PG or dual duty Gaurd in Sac.

oh i agree hes a ballhog but not to the extent your making it out to be ;)

The other point to be made about having another guard is that come mid-season, when a team really needs a guard, we might be able to snake a REAL DEAL.

I will sign on with the title of the thread.

Am I excited about Salmons, not really. Is this the end of the world? No.

The only teams that made major noise this offseason had a lot more salary flexibility than we did and/or a better draft position. The Peja signing probably ruined every team's dream of picking up some bargain talent.

If Bonzi really walks for nothing to get John Salmon money, sucks to be him.

You forgot to imagine the 30 win regular season that has us watching the Spurs in the first round instead of playing them.

No I didn't. We had a terrible record. Then we traded for Ron and around the same time Bonzi got hurt we went on a big winning streak. That's what got us into the playoffs. We definitley win more than 30, but I guess we could have missed out on the playoffs by a game or two...

AI does. He could be a perennial double-double guy if he didn't think the ball was attached to his hand like one of those kids' paddleball toys.

Back on topic. The guy can play. He's no star, but he can play, especially as a backup to Mike and Kevin as a ball handler, which was a real need, especially with Garcia injured. He's going to a new team with a new coach in a city called Sacramento. I say we give him a chance to prove his worth and support him as a member of the Sacramento Kings.

I don't see any way Salmons fits as the backup point guard. He's not better than Garcia. Right now he's probably better than Douby but only until Douby adjusts to the NBA game speed which should happen around midseason. We've given a 5 year deal to a guy who's going to be the 4th/5th guard unless we start trading guards tomorrow.

Agreed. My point was that stats for guys playing alongside AI are not a good reflection of how good a player is or can be so just merely judging JS on his stats is not fair.

please...the AI arguement doesn't fly here....Salmons is a decent bench player for a team that didn't make the playoffs....nothing more, regardless of who he played with or behind

I'm not saying that he's going to turn into the Big O and average a triple double, but there's too many people on this board hanging their hat on the fact that his stats in Philly were not all that good which must mean that he's not going to put up any kind of respectable stats for us. The fact is that playing alongside AI does not allow most players to play to their potential.
