Elton Brand and Baron Davis Opting Out (NEW: Davis agrees to terms with Clippers)

The Baron thing is of tremendous interest, although I do not see how we have any shot.

No need to throw big $$ at a 6'7" PF who's been to the playoffs one time in his career and now has a bad Achilles though.

Yeah I would LOVE to get Baron, but I just don't see how it could happen.

Yeah I agree. It would be nice if we looked into signing Baron and found a way, but I don't see how:(

Brand is saying he intends to stay with the clippers. Baron is probably dreaming of playing for the clips.

Elton Brand opting out is official, Baron Davis is allegedly opting out.

EDIT: Baron has officiall opted out now.

Brand is 29 years old so it would not be a good idea anyways. There is always a chance something can fall in the kings favor. (example) A team that wants to win now could sign brand and give up on a promising youngster.

There are very few teams with enough cap room to outright sign them, though there are a couple of teams like Memphis or Philly with some. More likely that a sign & trade deal will get worked out.

Either way I don't realistically see us in the bidding. Not only would one of those players have to want to come to Sacramento, we don't really have a lot of attractive assets to make it happen. I don't think the Clips or Warriors are interested in Brad. Maybe Artest to the Warriors, but I don't think they do that unless there was more on top of that, and we have little other than some crap contracts that expire in '10.

I'm suprprised Davis did this. Due to make > $17M next year. He and Nellie are really not seeing eye-to-eye.

That's assuming that this is not just a power play to force the Warriors to give him a long term big $$ contract now, while he's coming off of a great year, rather than risk having an injury or something next year knock into his value.

I may be mistaken, but isn't Davis the same age as Brand? Davis also has a history of knee problems, and again I might be wrong, but I don't ever remember Baron going very far in the post season (except for the Mavs upset). I would be excited to somehow work out a miracle and get Davis, but it seems like everybody is against an aging veteran with a history of injuries because it doesn't work with rebuilding. He is a terrific player, but I don't understad how he seems to be the popular exception to the rebuilding process here.

Good god, $17 million is not enough?!?
It's probably the length of his contract that prompted him to opt out. If he were to get injured next year, which is entirely possible then his next contract would be non-existent or much less.

Not condoning but that would be the reasoning I bet.

Yeah, doesn't Baron turn 29 soon? He's had a huge past of injuries in his mid-twenties, so its an almost for sure that they'll be popping up in his 30s. Plus, we'd have to pay him huge money in a contract that lasts way past the summer of 2010.

I say, no thanks.

Warriorsworld.net is in total chaos. They are tearing each other apart over all this LOL :D

I see the Kings making it to the playoffs before the Warriors do again. The west may not be quite as competitive next season as it was for 07-08, but I see the Warriors losing about 10 more games next year. That is if Baron really does leave town.

You know what's interesting though? Would you rather have Baron (29) and Brand or Beno (25), Maggette (28) and Brand (29)? That seems to be the choice.

I know the superstar theory and when Baron is on he's really really on, but with his history of injuries and unfocused consistency... man, I don't know, it's not such an easy choice to me. You lose Maggette and his 20 ppg and wing defense.

Beno + Maggette or just Baron?

Hmm...

According to Sam Amick's blog, Elton Brand opted out to give the Clippers "flexibility" in free agency.

Read between the lines and it seems like Baron and Brand want to make a run together in LA. Could be really interesting.

The Clips can't sign Baron unless they renounce the rights to Brand or come together on a contract that's significantly less pretty much immediately. They don't have that much cap room and EB's contract counts against them until he's signed by them(in which case it's replaced by the new one) or another team. They'd both have to play for like 8-10 mill a year which I doubt happens. Philly could pay Brand more than that, he can play with his former PG Andre Miller AND Iguodala, etc.

Baron could go to the clippers though I guess. IMO Elton is basically gone.

I think the scenario would be them both getting about $10 million a year. Brand has said that his intention is to stay in LA. Marc Stein lays it out: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3468448

But I agree with you, there are a lot of variables and it's kind of a stretch to see it working.

you know how some people say that kevin martin can score alot of points but doesn't really have that "game changing" type of scoring? Well maggette fits that to a T! I watch alot of clips games and he is nothing special. I'm tired of people talking about him so highly! Some wanted to trade artest for maggette! Screw that

They have Thornton to replace Maggette. Maggette's defense comes and goes and Beno does not play D. Baron is an injury risk, but him, Brand and Kaman could make a very good team.
