Yeah, it may be that contract he doesn't deserve, a la Varejao and Pavlovic, but I want to go straight for the money with Boykins: it's his height.
What else can explain his lack of interest during the free agency period? The guy put up the career numbers splitting last year with Milwaukee and Denver, and while Milwaukee's poor play gave him the opportunity to Ricky-Davis his stats, he averaged 15 points per game off the bench for Denver in 28 minutes. Really, a lot of teams would kill for 15 pts...off the bench. Hell, if Boykins was 6'0" or so like B-Jax or so, he'd probably be more appreciated. But what does Denver do instead? Trade him for the more passive BUT taller Steve Blake, who they promptly lose to Portland this offseason. I get the impression that teams consider Boykins' novelty worn out--we know the guy can score and rack up assists, but he's only getting older...and what else? I just don't see it that way: the guy, as short as he is, is a tough cookie who can get to the basket amongst the trees, shoot an astounding 90%ish from the line, be a proficient passer off the bench despite his scorer, become tops in assists per turnovers, and that's not even getting into his ability to score. Okay, I can't believe I'm rambling for the little guy, but just saying, if it weren't for his height, he should really be an impact player right now, for an impact team.
I have an odd feeling he's going to go to the Clippers--they seem to have dug for the underrated scraps of the NBA right now. The chronically injured, also height-deficient yet top 5 playmaker in the NBA Brevin Knight is on their roster, and the supposedly washed up, yet one time "Kobe stopper" underrated energy boosting scorer Ruben Patterson was also signed by them. I can see the height deficient, yet all-those-things-I-said Boykins joining them.
