Draft Combine Interviews of the Top Prospects

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Obviously how a guy interviews is somewhere south even of how well he jumps as a predictive measure, but here everybody is anyway.

Beal and Barnes particularly impress as being very bright. Drummond sounds a lot brighter than he is given credit for. Only guys who struggled were the Kentucky guys. MKG in particular has a speech impediment or some such apparently, but he and Jones felt very uncomfortable.

Drummond:
Beal
Barnes
Kidd-Gilchrist

Thanks for the videos! I think Drummond did pretty well. He does not strike me as unintelligent. He looks like someone that can be worked with. He will be a project.

Poor MKG looked absolutely terrified to be on camera. I don't know if it makes him a bad basketball player but it did not look good. He doesn't appear to handle some types of pressure very well.

Thomas Robinson wins the interview portion of this event IMO.

Yeah, MKG has always been extremely nervous on camera. I pointed this out a few months ago - he doesn't seem to have improved on it but it doesn't seem like too big a deal. I've seen interviews with Jones before and he's looked much more relaxed, I think he is very nervous here and thinking about his answers too much, which makes them sound pretty unintelligible. I still think he'll be a very good player and I believe he's a pretty smart person.

Whats interesting about MKG, is that if you hear him when he's not aware he's on mike, he sounds normal. He doesn't stutter at all. But the minute the lights go and he's on mike, he has a very difficult time. I would suggest you not put too much emphasis on it as to how it relates to his basketball game. As matter of fact, I think people get hoodwinked all the time by people who make their living being good speakers, but have no clue how to do anything else.

Yup, Jonny Flynn's bright smile and great interviews charmed a GM into picking him #5, while at the same draft Brandon Jennings couldn't string together back to back complete sentence.

Sometimes people who have a weakness in one area make up for it by being very strong in another. I agree it doesn't necessarily mean anything. How he responds to pressure in the game is what really counts. I think an IQ test would be a good idea in this case.

Did you know that MKG started up a Basketball 'Breakfast Club' last year?
He organized a number of the guys to hit the gym early every morning to help better prepare for the games. And...he did this while being the youngest member of an incredibly young and veteran-free team.

He is not shy around his teammates and he is definitely not shy while on the court. He is an absolute winner and does everything you'd want in a player the 'right' way while giving everything he's got on the court.

Giving this guy an IQ test due solely to his speech impediment would be a serious insult.
