Don Nelson: " if steph curry isnt rookie of the year, somethins wrong"

#5
somethin about this league makes it seem as if its possible for curry to win it...

game 6 in 02
getting the lowest possible pick in last years draft
curry winning over tyreke

jus sounds like something the league would do to the kings

Just shilling for his own guy.

Ridiculous because he and that organization have largely manufactured this race out of thin air and are selling it hard, but pretty sure Jerry Reynolds said almost exactly the same thing on a number of occasions.

But at least good ole' JR has reason to be saying it...I dont think he'd be boasting so much if Reke was averaging 17 pts. But 20-5-5 don't lie.

If you don't think J.R. would be boasting if his rookie was averaging 17ppg you just haven't been listening to Kings basketball these past 15 years. :p

And neither does leading a 35-point comeback on the road and making the likes of Arenas, Kobe and Artest look like boys against you a couple times this year.

I think Nelson is just supporting his guy and his guy is worth supporting. On the facts, each of their performances through season end has been outstanding. Surprisingly, in my view, a good case can be made for both of them, and both will have outstanding careers, but Evans had the edge in a big way at the beginning of the season and has maintained his excellent play, so much so that I believe he has clearly held through Curry's fantastic second half. Don't beat up on Nelson.

This is the full quote:

COACH DON NELSON ON GAME “What a bizarre game huh? Tell you one thing: If Stephen Curry isn’t Rookie of the Year there’s something wrong. What a performance, Co-Rookie of the Year would be beautiful, but that guy is pretty special and his performance tonight…what a ball game when I really only had five guys, 48 minutes and all of those guys had great stamina to get through a game like that and found a way to hang in there and win it. I’m very proud of them; it was a pretty special game for us.”

So, big deal. He's pushing for his guy. Good for him. I don't think this classifies him as an "idiot" or whatever most posters are calling him. The fact of the matter is Steph Curry has made a run at the ROY. I don't think he will win it, but it's not Tyreke by a landslide as it was 30 games ago.

This really isn't newsworthy IMO.

Oh wait, you're right...I remember him saying stuff like that 25 years ago, actually...right after we drafted Joe Kleine!:D Everyone's going to push for their guys, no matter if they're averaging 10 pts or 100, Jerry Reynolds...Don Nelson...Grant Napear...Tim Roye...they all do it, and they'll all vote for their guy too. More than likely Tyreke will win the ROY by about a 2-1 margin though...at least I can HOPE he does.

He's been coaching forever. Ofcourse he's gonna have the all time wins record. And he has zero rings to show for it cause his system is trash.

While I definitely agree that Nellie's system is trash, I don't think rings are everything. There are many great coaches far better than Don Nelson who haven't won any rings, e.g. Jerry Sloan. But of course Sloan's failure to win a title has more to do with who was on the opposing team than to do with his system.
