dikemebe, almost rushes the stands

ORLANDO, FLA. - An incensed Dikembe Mutombo was restrained from going into the stands after a fan shouting racial slurs on Thursday and said that if the NBA objects to his behavior, next time he will not be stopped.
Mutombo flashed an obscene gesture at the fan and began walking toward him when Rockets trainer Keith Jones and game official Phil Robinson intervened.
"If they didn't kick him out of this arena, he would have seen me off the court," Mutombo said. "I will not accept that. We are not in the '60s. People have paid the price for us to be where we are today. For him to call a black man a monkey in the middle of the game, he was in the second row, for him to stand up and call, 'Mutombo the monkey,' is an insult. It insulted my integrity, my body, my family, my race."

Holding his thumb and forefinger a quarter-inch apart, Mutombo said he was "this close" to going in the stands.
When asked if he expected to be fined for his gesture, he said, "If they fine me, I will go straight to the stands next time and (mess) somebody up."
Magic spokesman Joel Glass said Robinson contacted a security official who brought in police to escort the fan from the arena. The incident was turned over to NBA Security, he said.
"I want to see what the league will do," Mutombo said. "I hope they won't allow him in the arena any more. I'll call the commissioner (David Stern) myself.
"He's got no business to be in the arena. If he's not going to come and watch the game and enjoy it, the beauty of this game, the success of the league, he should not be allowed. The league is getting tougher on the player. We need to get tougher to ... the people who accuse us and mistreat us.
"Guys like Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar), Bill Russell, Oscar Robinson, they don't want to see this happen to today, to our generation, what they witnessed in their lifetime when they were playing to pay the price for what we have today.
"It's sad that this is still going on in America."

Boy if you manage to pee off mutombo of all people, you must have said something really bad.

That's really sad to see considering Mutombo is one of the largest philanthropists in the NBA.

One of those cases where the laws of this country are a bit unfortunate. Would make things so much easier of the fans on either side of said idiot could legally just beat the **** out of him as soon as he opened his disgusting mouth and save Deke the aggravation.

I think Mutombo is over-reacting. And this is nothing as compared to things being thrown at you. Definitely not a good reason go into to stands for.

To say that he overreacted is a bit much, If the guy was seriously yelling out those types of racial slurs then he deserves much more than a basketball player flipping him off. Ignorance is the plague of the human race.

Everyone is entitled to opinions.

I think I do have some authority when I talk about racial remarks. I am an Indian and have gone through racial discrimination myself. I have done my Masters here in US and have heard more than enough racial remarks myself in my 5 years of stay in US. I also had an incident when I was thrown ice cubes at and the kids made some racial remarks from a moving car while I was just walking on a pavement.

So I have a pretty good idea how it feels. But I like the line "Ignorance is the plague of the human race." Probably will use it sometime. :)

As for my take on Mutombo situation, he is professional, close to 40. I think he should be able to handle that better. I have no problem with him being pissed and all. My only problem is with his remark about charging into the stands. A 7'2", 250-260 pound (or whatever he is guy) charging into the stands is a dangerous things with kids around in the arena. Someone could get hurt and it sets a very bad example for young and impressionable minds.

Personally, I think this is worse than having someone throw stuff at you. Throwing stuff isn't directed at who you are, the thrower is just looking to hit someone.

Did he overreact? Probably. Good for him for standing up for what he believes in, though.

yup... usually getting metally hurt is worse than getting physically hurt...

I was at a game where some pimply whit eboy called Ewing a gorilla and a black woman glared back at him. Kid was absolutely obnoxious. Kept standing up and raising his arms at scores way up in the nosebleeds, doing a great job of obscuring my view. I was sitting there thinking how nice he would look with a basilar skull fracture.

I would say this and about spitting on someone are about the 2 worst things to degrade a person. I actually am impressed he didnt go up there and take care of biz.

Dikembe did control himself. Which I am glad about, because it could turn into a real ugly situation, real fast, with innocent people getting hurt. Not to mention terrorizing the kids.

Having said that, I can't even believe were talking about what Mutombo said he felt like doing. The only person wrong here was the jerk in the stands. IMHO, he should be banned for life from NBA arenas. As far as I'm concerned, I don't want to go out fro an evening and be sujected to that behavior and if I'm there with my kids, I really be upset.

Words like that are assault and battery on on a person's humanity. Enough words like that can kill the soul.

The thing is...there is no reason to argue over whether or not it was worst than the incident involving Rom Artest. This is a separate issue that was both instigated differently and carried out differently in terms of involvement with the crowd.

I don't think anyone is comparing the Artest fight to this.

Bibbyweb brought up the personal experience of having things thrown at him/her by people motivated by racism. That is what brought the discussion of hurling words versus hurling phyysical objects.
