I don't normally support the posting of "bulletin board material," and you'd think that I'd be immune to it after all of the stuff that gets posted in the Kings forum, but this just irks me:

Stormfans.org: the "why the monarchs bite" thread

Well, at least now we know that it's not just the fans of the men's game that can be classless...

You know it's sad to see such low class comments in the women's game. It's OK if you want to call DeMya a flopper, or comment on Ticha's passing. Frankly, anything a player does on the court is open for comment. But when you get into tasteless and cruel comments about age, sexual orientation and appearance it really is going waaaaaaaaaay too far. What's next, a joke about Edna's breast cancer?

Frankly I have always respected and liked the Storm as a team (once they got rid of Lyn Dunn). I think they are very talented. I would hope - actually I know - that the members of this board would never engage in those type of hurtful comments.

I had worried that this series might lack the emotional intensity of LA since we dislike LA's attitude and tactics so much, but this thread has totally changed my attitude about the Seattle series.

What The Heck!!

 I was appalled when I read the things that they wrote. They did not have to talk so much about my gurl DeMya Walker. WHY THE HELL WAS JUST ABOUT EVERY REPLY ABOUT HER??? I WOULD GO AND POST SUMTHIN ON THEIR THREAD TELLIN THEM WHAT I THINK, BUT THAT WOULD ONLY MAKE ME LOWER THAN THE SCUM THAT THEY ARE!!!

NOW WE REALLY GOT TO BEAT THE STORM!!!

GO DWALK!! SHOW THE STORM FANS WHATS UP!

Dang, I did not know it went down like that in WNBA land. I guess when you are used to such class in this forum, to read stuff like that kind of shocked me.

#6
Hmmmm...I think I will pass on clicking on that link. The Storm fans are on the same par as Sparks fans and I still have little use for them or their team, even with Dunn gone. Nothing will back these folks down but the Monarchs continuing to win and their fans continuing to conduct themselves with some semblance of decency.

On another note....I'm still waiting for Marcos Breton to write a follow up column to his column of last season...since he's this big time Monarchs fan and all.

Can somebody tell me what time the game is in Seattle on Sunday. I may be interested in going, if i can find a cheap ticket. I have never been there, this is a great excuse to go.

#8
Oh...and StormFans might wanna consult their history books or their memory banks, the last time they went on a Smack-a-Thon about their playoff opponent, LA dismissed them in 2 straight.

Just something for their consumption since they are likely lurking here.....

Wow, I didn't even know Seattle had fans. Heh. I haven't and won't click on that link, but from what I have read on this thread it sounds a lot like the ESPN WNBA message boards smack. I stopped perusing them long ago because of that.

Hmmm..very interesting to say the least. Very creative thread title, "Why the Monarchs bite", yeah that is very classy. They can talk their smack while the Monarchs beat the Storm and they'll back down. Sounds good to me :D.

I find some of the responses in this thread to be interesting; I don't find the fact that WNBA fans talk trash nearly as shocking as some of you ladies seem to... I'm more irked by the fact that a team that has won exactly one playoff series in their franchise history is talking trash about anybody than I am by the trash talk in itself.

I also agree with JD in that whatever the players do on the court is fair game, but jokes about a player's (alleged) sexual orientation is just childish.

Ok who tipped off K&K...I was driving home and heard them talk about this.

Geesh, they could at least be original.

If it was an LA fan, then the "cow town" comments wouldn't bug me, but from a Seattle fan? As they were saying on the radio today, when did we become rivals? Did I missed something. But really now, the cow town comments are old, lame and just sad, or do you really think Arnie and crew have their tractors hitched up behind the capital?

----------

To each their own...I'm not going to tell someone how to be a fan. If storm fans find pleasure in making fun of our players, then that's them. I myself stop making fun of people around the 3rd grade (ok I confess a little ribbing here and there out of fustration), I couldn't get what my grandmother always told me " if you make fun of other people, your kids will be ugly" ;)

I believe that the word you're looking for is "derivative."

I think that it has something to do with the fact that the Monarchs had the temerity to beat the Sparks, and thereby come between the Storm and their "destiny" of becoming 2004 WNBA champions.

Just another reason to hate Phil Jackson; it's all his fault...

Apropos of nothing, being stationed in Bremerton now, I've been to Seattle several times; I'm not impressed, to tell you the truth, and I have my doubts that many, if any, of the people calling Sacramento a "cow town" have ever been there.

From a Seattle fan's perspective

I'm not sure that any of you want to hear this, but in addition to the "bites" thread on the stormfans.org forum, there was also a "why I like the Monarchs" thread where Seattle fans expounded upon what they liked best about the Monarchs players. As you know, Edna Campbell came to the Monarchs from the Storm. Many of us have great respect for Ruthie Bolton and have followed Guiliana for her whole career at UW. I think I speak for most of the regulars on the forum when I say that we respect the Monarchs as a team. We believe that they play hard but fair basketball and our only consistent complaint is the amount of flopping that one player is trying to perfect. We have always cheered on Sacramento in all their playoff appearance against any competitor.

The "bites" thread was just us blowing off a little trash talking before the series starts. If you read closely, you will see that people were really stretching to find things to complain about. Just as a quick note, the comment about the braids and ribbons was based directly upon what another player once said about Tangela Smith and her concern that the general public generalizes that every woman playing in the WNBA is a lesbian. Those of us who are fans all know better. Some are, some aren't and it certainly has no effect on their ability to play ball. I'm sorry that this comment was misunderstood.

And just for the information if any of you thinking of traveling to Seattle for Game 2 and/or Game 3, we Seattle fans are used to visits from Monarchs fans and I believe that we treat them with courtesy. We appreciate fans coming to cheer on their team as long as their idea of supporting their team doesn't mean being rude to our team. I know that sounds hypocritical after the "bites" thread, but I don't think a single poster would say any of those things to a player's face or yell them during a game.

And speaking of which, a group of Seattle fans has come down to Sacramento three times over the last two seasons. Now, I will admit that we fly in, watched the game and fly right back out again, so we didn't see much of your town. Since our arena is in downtown Seattle, I think many of us were a bit put off by your arena being so far out of town. In addition, during our visits to your arena, while some fans treated us very politely, we have been told to shut up, sit down, cursed at and had things thrown at us by Monarchs fans. And just to put that in perspective, we sat by the visitors' bench and were all very careful to only say things to support the Storm and nothing against the Monarchs because that wouldn't be polite behavior for visitors in your arena. So, while we were on our best behavior, we were not treated with similar respect from all Monarch fans. And lastly as to the classiness or classlessness of fans, while sitting near the visitors' bench in your arena, I heard things being yelled at Storm players that made me blush. Some of the comments were rude, foul-mouth and plain disgusting. Again, I know this isn't all Monarchs fans exhibiting this behavior, but don't think that it doesn't happen in your arena.

I hope that this helps put this whole incident in perspective. I don't think there isn't a Storm fan in all of Seattle that isn't lookiing forward to the series with the Monarchs. We are elated that the Monarchs bumped out the Sparks! We expect to see a hard fought, competitive series and can't wait. No one is assuming the outcome of the Western Conference Finals because the Monarchs have showed the league just how much grit they have.

Good luck to you and your team and we'll see you at Arco or the Key.

Yes I did too. I believe it was the sideline reporter for the Storm wasn't it? I believe so anyway. I remember somebody named Ann.

I read that thread and a majority of those posts are jabs at the Monarchs even though its supposed to be a "why I like the Monarchs thead".

Theres a difference between having fun ribbing the other team and trashing players personally. Its classless to make fun of Tangela in that manner.

m sure your team has a player or 2 that has a reputation that can be slammed just as much.

DecimalGirl, first of all, thanks for coming over and posting. We invite anyone to come and discuss the WNBA and Monarchs in a constructive manner. I also do not blame all the Storm Fans for the comments of some.

To me, trash talk is building up your team ("We have the reining MVP") or commenting on our players court actions (ie DeMya flopping). If you want to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each team or how your team matches up with ours, or that you beat us more times in the regular season, no problem. You are correct they were stretching to find things to complain about. Most of the comments were just tired (cow town/bells), but some were tasteless (Tangela)

I don't live in Sacramento. I drive an hour each way for the games, but the Arena is just a few minutes from downtown. It is old with plastic seats, but that is not the Monarchs fault. Also, if fans were rude to you, then I apologize. I have no problem with other fans coming in if they are polite and cheer for their team. I have only had a couple problems with fans from visiting teams over the years, but by and large everyone is well-behaved.

I think I remember seeing a thread on your forum yesterday called "Just Hand Us the Trophy Now".

Reading the entire thread

I believe that you have valid comments about my post. We don't entirely agree, but I don't think arguing digitally will solve anything so, let's leave it at that.

However, I want you to know, in case you didn't read the entire thread about "Hand us the trophy," one person made that comment. There are then two pages of Storm fans posting telling that person to stop talking like that, not to count their victories before they've been won and to generally not count out the Monarch until the last :20 of any given game. We are not assuming anything about this series.

Less misunderstanding will happen if you are lurking on a board and actually read the entirety of the thread instead of basing your entire opinion on the title of the thread.

Not only that, but on the front page of the Web Site it says "Countdown to the first game of the 2004 WNBA Finals — Seattle vs Connecticut"

Look, Decimal Girl, it is very appreciative for you to come over this way to explain away your fan's behavior. But it is obvious to me that you clearly are in the minority. In fact one of the posters over there accuse this board with being "way too sensitive". It's not that. I think the Monarch fans can take the cow town, the fans being rude and all that stuff. but when you begin to question someone's lifestyle, especially when you, I or nobody has a clue what it is, and neither do we care, What does that have to do with basketball?

#23
Whatever

You obviously don't read much of our board which is understandable since you are not a Storm fan. If you did, you would know that the vast majority of fans on our board have no problem with any lifestyle. We kid and we tease, but unless you spend some time on the board and get to know the people, anything you say about our board or threads is likely to be taken out of context.

I'm done with this. We'll see you at the Western Conference Finals.

If you're going to quote something, quote the whole thing.

Yes, the counter on the main page of the Stormfans site is set for the first game of the playoffs and it does say Seattle vs Connecticut. You conveniently left out the "Just my guess" part. My follow up to you about this is - so none of the Monarchs fans are hoping that their team will make it to the Finals? A Storm fan site that makes a hopeful prediction that the Storm makes it to the Finals is classless? Okay.

The "Just hand us the trophy" thread - the person who started it was shouted down by two pages of posts, many of them pointing out that it was that kind of arrogance that helped lead to the eventual downfall of the Sparks. Storm fans, classless again.

Let's get to the meat of it, my original comment about Tangela Smith's hair. I made no comment about her sexual orientation. My comment said that she is straight and is overcompensating by wearing little girl braids to make sure everyone knows she's straight. I was mocking her hair, not her orientation (which I could care less about). Your response above - insinuating that Tully Bevilaqua is a lesbian. Storm fans - classless again.

Just to give you a little taste of your own medicine, let's pull some recent posts from this forum and take a look at them:

6th, on the Monarchs @ LA - game time thread, "Someone clothesline that b****, Dixon."... I hate her much worse than any other Spark player...

Still JD, same thread, "And 6th, amen to your list, especially #3 - Lisa is smug, but Dixon's a thug."

ReinadelosReys, same thread, "LOL! Sad, but true! I've gotten so mad, I've resulted to making fun of the LA players. Thomas looks like she is growing a beard! ...oh the shame."

6th, on the Win or go home, Monarchs vs Sparks game time thread, "DIE SPARKS SCUM!!!"

Monty'sBiggestFan, same thread, "Kara, tell Dixon to kiss your ****"

I can either use your methods of interpretation and decide that all Sacramento fans on this board are nasty, classless and childish, or I can be reasonable and see this as fans talking smack about a playoff opponent.

Let me know if I'm misinterpreting or misquoting anything.

Let's stop all this personal attack on whose board is better, worse, etc. and concentrate on the series itself. This thread has come full circle now.
