Detroit Pieces

Starter
Joe Dumars is ready to roll some heads since Detroit lost in the Eastern Conference finals for the third straight year. He says he is going to make some major changes, and there are no sacred cows. Many "insiders" are reporting that the two players most likely to be traded would be Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey Billups. Chauncey just signed a large contract extension last summer, but hehas been an all star caliber point guard for several seasons now. Rasheed has also been an allstar the past few seasons, and he has an expiring contract after this season. Since Chauncey is a BYC player, he would be harder to trade for, but this trade works under the cap, as long as on doesn't opt out.

Sacramento Out:

Brad Miller
Ron Artest
John Salmons

Sacramento In:

Chauncey Billups
Rasheed Wallace

Detroit Out:

Chauncey Billups
Rasheed Wallace

Detroit In:

Brad Miller
Ron Artest
John Salmons

Why the Kings do this: This move would expedite our rebuild by swapping the contracts of Brad Miller and John Salmons for Chauncey Billups, and Ron's expiring for Rasheed's. Francico Garcia would finally get the minutes he deserves as the starting 3, and we would finally have some answers at point guard for a while. I don't like Rasheed's rebounding, but his defense would give us just what we were looking for at the 4 spot, and Chauncey is also a terrific defender and shooter. Finally gives minutes to Spencer and Cisco, so they can start to produce like they are capable.

Why the Kings don't do this: Brad Miler and John Salmons were both much improved this year. The Kings are already a poor rebounding team, so removing their leading rebounder would seem to be a step in the wrong direction. The individual defense of Artest would also be a poor asset to lose, but you have to give talent to get talent.

Why the Pitons do this: Since their team has consistently become complacent in the playoffs, and are perrenial players, but not champions, they are looking for a major culture shift. Artest is crazy, but he is also very hungry, and is all about winning. They have lots of 6'8" PFs to replace Sheed, and both John and Ron would wreak havoc on the defenses in the Eastern Conference. This would give them a great counter to LeBron, and Pierce in the East. Brad Miller could push this deal over the top if his rebounding numbers remain high, as his passing would make up for the loss of Billups.

Why the Pistons don't do this: Contracts are worse for them, and chemistry could still be in question with this deal. It would be hard for the Detroit fans to accept Ron Artest as a Piston since the brawl, but really, he would fit in nicely with the city's Bad Boy perception. Salmons would be a fan favorite because of his defense and his aggressiveness to get to the rim, and Stucky could take over for Billups nicely, but it does hurt trading 2 all stars for 1 ex all star.

Kings Lineup:

1 Chaunce Billups/Beno Udrich
2 Kevin Martin/Quincy Douby
3 Francisco Garcia/2nd Round Pick?
4 Rasheed Wallace/Sheldon Williams/KT?
5 Spencer Hawes/Mikki Moore/Shareef Abdur-Rahim?

Could draft best available (PG?PF?SF?)

Pistons Lineup

1 Rodney Stucky/Lindsay Hunter/Arron Afflalo
2 Richard Hamilton/John Salmons
3 Ron Artest/Tashaun Prince
4 Antonio McDyess/Amir Johnson/Draft Pick?
5 Brad Miller/Jason Maxiel

Robin Lopez?

I highly doubt Artest ever plays for the Pistons, considering that was where the brawl started. Aside from that, I'm still not sure I do this. Wallace's expiring is nice, but Billups is not what we need unless we plan on making other changes to contend NOW. I'd prefer to just trade Miller for Wallace, then try to trade Artest for any young players or picks or expirings and rebuild the right way

If we're committing to a rebuild, we cannot continue to bring aging players into the mix. We have to continue to bite the bullet, allowing contracts we cannot dump to expire and hope we can get something/anything in the draft.

Billups and Sheed aren't going to last long enough to be long-term assets and we're long past the quick fix.

The only Pistons I'd be interested in are Amir, Maxi, and Stuckey.

...But I'm pretty sure those three are untouchables (besides maybe Amir who never got any burn under Flip).

Exactly. Detroit is trying to do the same thing we've been doing over the past 5 years -- clear out the old core and establish a new group of young players. The only guys we should want are the ones they're unlikely to trade.

Rasheed has an expiring contract, and Billups is still a servicable PG (of which we have none on the roster). + Defense, + Cap Space, + Young guys playing time. Doesn't that sound like a step in the right direction?

Trading for Wallace is a step in the right direction because of his expiring. Trading for Billups? No. There's no doubt he's a really good player and PG, but he's owed an average of 12-13Mil over the next 3-4 seasons. Not to mention that he's already 31. It just doesn't make sense for us to acquire him when we're in a rebuilding phase.
