Bench
Pistons fan suspected of throwing coin at opposing player

April 27, 2005

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) -- A Detroit Pistons fan was arrested Tuesday night after the Philadelphia 76ers' Allen Iverson was struck with a coin at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The incident did not escalate into a confrontation on the scale of the Nov. 19 Palace brawl involving Pistons fans and Indiana Pacers players.

Iverson was hit while sitting on the bench with about two minutes left in the 76ers' first-round playoff game against the Pistons, Auburn Hills police Sgt. Rick Leonard said in a written statement. Other fans pointed out the suspect to police and Palace security.

The man, identified only as a 31-year-old Taylor, Mich., resident, was released pending a review of the incident by Oakland County prosecutors, Leonard said.

Iverson scored 19 points in the 99-84 Detroit victory that gave the Pistons a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

In the Nov. 19 brawl, Indiana's Ron Artest rushed into the stands and began beating a man he thought had thrown a drink on him. Some of his teammates joined him in the stands and also clashed with fans on the court.

Five Pacers players and four Pistons fans are charged with misdemeanor assault and battery. Fans William Paulson and John Ackerman are to go on trial July 11. John Green, the fan who prosecutors say sparked the brawl by lobbing the drink at Artest, is to be tried along with David Wallace, brother of Pistons center Ben Wallace, on July 15.

The Pacers players are to be tried separately, starting with Artest on Aug. 1 and followed by Anthony Johnson, David Harrison, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson in that order.

A fan charged with throwing a chair pleaded no contest last month and awaits sentencing. Three other fans were sentenced to probation for walking onto the court or throwing objects.

NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Artest for the season, and handed lengthy suspensions to O'Neal and Jackson.

I wouldn't go with the world, since there are parts of Europe where pelting players with coins is practically considered good form. But in the NBA? Yes.

Maybe they should do what they did with Philadelphia Eagles fans a few years back -- they had so many drunken brawls breaking out every game that they actually set up a court with a real judge in the bowels of the stadium for every game so that they could process all the arrests right on the spot.

Interesting...did I miss the part where the most "street" playa of the league responded with violence that pulled his whole team into the throw down. No, I didn't think so.

Pretty disturbing for Bird when Iverson provides a good role model for Artest.

Given the numerous Red Wing incidents on top tothe Pistons crap I think it's safe to say that Detroit fans will low ball any other fans in professional sports.

I don't know about you, but I want to see another one of them get punched. As long as my team doesn't do it.

All I have to say is why? Why would a fan do that NOW? Here you have the defending champions that your are routing for and you lower yourselves and your team by being this stupid. The Pistons are a great team, with truly talented, highly esteemed players. They deserve fans that will support them instead of bring the whole organization down. I want to see the Pistons go all the way to the Championship again this year and I think they will, but God help them if their fans continue to embarass not only themselves, but Joe Dumars, Larry Brown, the team and the city.

what an idiot. people like him shouldn't be allowed to attend any more games as long as he lives. period.

many a European soccor player has pondered that timeless question, "is it better to be hit by coins or bottles full of urine?"

You know, I was at the game, and I didn't even hear about this until a couple hours ago (its 11:05 PM EST the next day). Someone allegedly sitting next to the guy (an acquantence) who threw the quarter called into WDFN, one of the local sports stations, and said the guy who threw it wasn't right in the head. The guy who called in, Mike, is now also being charged with sitting in a seat that wasn't his (which I think is stupid, that is what you do in blowouts, you go closer to the action into the seats of people who have left). Apparently it is guilt by association.
