Derrick Rose – “NBA Players are using steroids”

In the May 16th issue of ESPN the Magazine, on Page 50, Derrick Rose was asked: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how big of an issue is illegal enhancing in the NBA?” Derrick Rose: “Seven. It’s huge, and I think we need a level playing field where nobody has that advantage over the next person.” Other countries are going to demand that Team USA’s immunity from failed drug tests is removed. They have had immunity from failing drug testing in FIBA and the Olympics since 1989, and now the other countries will demand this end. And to all the NBA zombies that keep claiming Team USA gets tested……they have IMMUNITY from failed drug tests.

I can't say for certain but I would guess it has to do with players using recreational or medicinal drugs that aren't considered "performance enhancing" by anyone outside of the international organizations. Remember when they started stripping Olympic snowboarders of their medals for smoking pot? NBA players got pot excluded from their list of substances that mandate discipline if I recall correctly in past CBAs and I'm sure that things like sinus meds and asthma inhalers are tolerated to a much higher degree in the NBA than even other American sports leagues that have far laxer standards than the international sanctioning organizations. So surely some athletes could be on steroids or other PEDs that have the same triggers as one of those meds and say "Oh no, its just my nasal spray".

What is the reasoning behind USA players having immunity to failed drug tests? What genius came up with that idea?

More to the point, what is the SOURCE of USA olympic players having immunity to failed drug tests outside of the hard-hitting news website called "howtogetweedoutofyoursystem.com"?

The source is espn magazine (at least according to every other source that I've read) but I don't have an insider account.

Couldn't find much on this but this appears like it could be originating from angry European fans that think the NBA is cheating Euro-ballers out of titles. There appears to be some not so thin racist tinges to the discussion as well.

In any event, the 6th reply to this thread quotes an AP article that I couldn't find online that talks about US players testing during the Athens games and basically refutes these charges.

NBA Olympic Players to Get Random Tests
STEPHEN WILSON AP Sports Writer
Published 12:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2003

NBA players participating in the 2004 Athens Games will face the same drug testing procedures as other Olympic athletes under a global program endorsed by sports federations and more than 70 national governments Wednesday.

"There will be no differentiation between a team handball athlete and an NBA professional," said Terry Madden, chief executive officer of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

So this may be much ado about nothing.

Other quotes from this same article:

The code upholds the Olympics' "strict liability" policy, meaning athletes are responsible for any banned substance in their body regardless of how it got there. Some flexibility is allowed for in in case of unintentional doping violations and exceptional circumstances.

As part of the plan, NBA players would face out-of-competition, random drug tests for the games starting July 1.

Under the system, which applies to athletes in all Olympic sports, drug testers can show up unannounced at a player's house at any time to ask for a sample.

"It's not anything I really have to worry about, myself," Seattle SuperSonics star Ray Allen said.

The NBA players' union had no comment Tuesday except to say it was reviewing the new policy.

U.S. players had to take random drug tests at training sites in Hawaii and Australia before the 2000 Sydney Olympics. NBA players also were subject to out-of-competition controls before last year's world championships.

In other words, Rose may or may not be right (has he seen it personally? If so it would have to be somebody on the Bulls right?) Although of course you always have to worry about freakletes like LeBron of Dwight. But in any case, regardless of Rose's statement, the Olympic information appears to be flat out false. Nothing more than a Euro variety of the conspiracy theory. Half truths, out of date facts, and utter conviction you are correct, place in blender, and mash it all together.

Noone on the Bulls is a obvious suspect for PED's. He's probably not stupid enough to out himself. Boozer and Deng are too injury prone (PED's can give you "superhuman" recovering abilities), Noah is noticeably stronger than when he came into the league, but it took several years for it to happen, nothing suspicious there. Everyone else doesnt' matter.

Me thinks Rose is being fast and lose with testing facts to justify his jab at NBA players that he thinks use PEDs. I'd bet my months salary that he had LeBron in mind when he said something about NBA not having "level playing field".

Rose's "love" for LeBron is well documented by Chicago media. Rose just has it in for him for whatever reason. And it predates The Decision.

No offense, but I think this post is a great example of how misunderstood PEDs are.

Well the above posts would make sense. It would be ludicrous for any nation to be immune from failing drug tests. It's an odd one, I'd never heard of Euro teams (or fans) complaining of US having immunity from failing drug tests.

Well, Boozer does have rather extreme forehead acne and a body that looks like he could have been using steroids.

I suspect a few players may use PEDs but we get to see their bodies and only the occasional player has that steroid induced musculature. Just off the top of my mind I don't recall that characteristic steroid induced musculature on anyone.

Are they used to aid healing? Perhaps. One could argue that this is a legitimate use of a steroid although it then blurs lines horribly. These guys are hurting all the time or they aren't playing the game right. :) The ankles, the bruises, the various pulled muscles and even jumper's knee might heal quicker. It's tempting and with some of these guys, they will pop whatever a trainer tells them to put in their mouth. <<< I doubt if this happens but a brother, a friend, etc. might just have something that will help the ankle. Oh, my, that sounded like I was addressing it to Reke and I disavow any intention of that.

I WILL say that in noticing the change in Kanter's body from last year to this, there has been a spectacular increase in his biceps and the use of steroids crossed my mind. I have NEVER thought of that about any other player just as a frame of reference. Doesn't mean it's true. Just might mean the guy has a frame that can handle a lot of weight and he worked his butt off.

Is this sour grapes? Lebron is a big guy; one of those oddities that comes along rarely like Vernon Davis of the Niners. It happens.

Quite honestly, if my job depended on being physically healthy, I mighty us steroids to heal from an ankle twist. It's short term and I could even twist my moral compass to say this is not to get stronger and therefore OK because it isn't to increase size and strength.

I don't have a clue as to why the US should have a different system than the rest of the countries competing in the Olympics. I DO know that Lance Armstrong has been hounded for a decade and it is easy to say he is/was being hounded out of jealosy. Some people are tired of American success.

Just noticed the note on Boozer. Hmm!

I don't have a clue as to why the US should have a different system than the rest of the countries competing in the Olympics.
Part of it is the fact that the NBA has intentionally remained distinct from FIBA (It is less of an olympic issue and more of a generic international one). The other part is the players union. FIBA has a zero tolerance policy, NBA allows for a certain amount of testing to be disregarded - I think NBA players get 3 positives for marijuana before it goes public and merits discipline. FIBA is one strike.

I know there are some players that FIBA has suspended from international play that have played in the D-League or NBA (Orien Greene is one). FIBA decided that even though the 2 year suspension they gave Greene had finished in calendar time since he played in the D-League during the ban they would extend it and voided a contract he signed last year.

So I suspect incidences like these lead to the sour grapes whining amongst some international fans and it got filtered back into US online media.
