I'm not sure how this helps the Lakers go after Deron. Obviously if they make this deal they do it with an eye to keeping Howard long term. Now, if Howard picks up his option, then they have about $10M less salary than they would have, but are still way over the tax, and their sign-and-trade assets are Metta and Salmons and Walton and Blake, and you just can't package crap like that to get an All-Star PG. If Howard opts out, they just have to resign him and his cap hold will kill their space until they do.
In principle I'm not against picking up Gasol, but I didn't look carefully at where his big $ would put our cap situation if we got him because I don't think this trade happens.
I think it's much more likely that the Lakers do something close to straight-up Bynum for Howard if Orlando panics, then close to straight-up Gasol for Deron, then they re-sign both of them. That's how they get Deron and Howard together - not by sending the one chip they could actually use to get Deron to us in exchange for less-desirable pieces.

This is similar to the deal I was imagining, but I think NJ has to get involved in a trade here as well. If Howard doesn't go to NJ, then Deron walks in the off-season. A 4-team deal involving Howard, Williams to L.A., some young assets to NJ and Orlando and Gasol to Sac-town could work.
Also, no team is going to take Salmons. Either we amnesty him in the off-season or we're stuck with him long-term.

That's a good shout, and I could see that. Also, a team COULD take Salmons, but only if they ditch a sufficiently bad contract or problem as well. Like Metta+Walton or Rashard Lewis. So yeah- I'd rather use the amnesty. I do think Cisco is highly tradeable, though, and that several teams could take a flyer. The Lakers could be one of them.
Trading Evans for Augustin is still downright silly.
