De'Aaron Fox Traded to Spurs for Zach Lavine, three first round picks

We got the monkey off our backs with Fox leaving. I'm not nearly as heartbroken as I was with Cousins being sent out, I don't know why, but I am just not. Maybe it's because of how we traded Cousins, but I don't think Fox was on the same talent level as Cousins (man, if only he could have kept his cool even halfway under control). I don't have the sense of dread either. Somehow, it feels like it's going to work out. I definitely have a feeling there is at least one more trade incoming. Roster is far too unbalanced now, it needs some tidying up.

Spurs got everything they wanted and kept everything of value. They won massively. We lost. All this talk about “we finally got muh assets!” in a couple of faux 1 round picks and handful of throw away 2nd rounders is a massive cope.

This is how NBA works. The Lakers must have a prime HOFer on their roster at all times and all small market teams must bend the knee to big market teams.

Man, I dunno. I'm glad we at least got to see a sample of LaVine being healthy and good this year, because I'd been SO against him the previous couple seasons. I think this just got to the point where we were forced to take what we could get because Fox forced his way to SA and the rest of the league knew it. And he's just not at the level where a team will strip their assets to take that risk. The little nugget that the entire league knew he was going to SA, if he didn't get the All-NBA tag, is just ****ing heart-breaking to hear tbh. So we were just screwed either way.


I give it like 5.5/10. We didn't get fleeced, but we should have done significantly better as the team trading the best player in the deal. Context I think got in the way of that.

thats fair. Could look alot different down the road too depending on what we do with the flexibility and assets. plus csn you see Fox’s next contract look Like Beals? I don’t think that’s out of the question

this team needed to do the following and got none of them done with this trade:

• Get Longer
• Balance minutes front court to back court
• Get better defensively

A perception of this trade will depend how one values Fox and LaVine.Going strictly by how those 2 performed this year it's hard to not at least call this trade as really solid for the Kings( and very very good for Spurs)

That said, even if one could be convinced that they were close to equal players/assets, the tipping point would be the age differences and current contracts.

Lavine’s contract is more expensive and a year longer (while being a lesser player), and is nearly 3 years older than De’Aaron.

That’s precisely why Lavine didn’t have the same level of interest from other suitors nor could command the same type of asset return. Although our front office clearly accepted less than another more competent FO could have held out for, so there is that.

On the face of it, not the beeest deal you’d hope for when it comes to Fox. But we traded a 1x All Star with 1.5 years on his deal, who had a specific destination he wanted to go to and got back a 24/4/4 guy, 2 firsts and 5 seconds. Not the worst thing in the world if they wanted to re-tool.

Teams don't play their game on paper. You don't think the 3pt shooting will help the Kings at all? With Monk and Keon filling in for Fox we were a better team.

God some people. This trade is excellent. We got a player that's locked long term who is litteralu just as good as fox but in a position of more need. We got bigger just like everyone wanted, got rid of hueter, and got 3 1st. No matter how you slice it that's a freakin win.

I was hoping we would keep Huerter’s money for additional trades now that we have the second round picks. He’ll be an expiring next season so it’s more than tradeable even though he sucks now…but the Kings pretty much capped themselves out for the rest of the trade deadline by moving him as well.

So while we don’t *need* to trade Deebo. He’s pretty much the last moveable piece that makes enough money to bring over another consequential piece or a couple role players that brings more balance that may fit the mold of a player the Kings need now. Kings aren’t rebuilding by opting for LaVine.

But we’re fast approaching another deadline and the Kings still have zero depth, zero size, and limited athleticism and now I don’t see any path that these will be meaningfully addressed by Thursday if NOT DeMar being on the block.

I’m intrigued by what Domas and LaVine can do together but we’re only Domas point forward/center ability away from simply being what the Chicago Bulls have been for the last few years.

And LaVine’s injury history can’t be ignored here. It’s a pretty extensive one. If he can stay healthy. Then he’s a good value for value swap for Fox.

Also, it’s a bit funny the Kings could’ve been practically gifted LaVine last season and this offseason when the Bulls were begging teams to take him off their hands for filler but now we ended up spending our biggest chip AND our next largest upcoming expiring on him.

So, I just think our assets could’ve been managed for better return here.

But again, I’m happy to be moving on. I just hope we aren’t done this week. Monte has a lot of work to do because almost no weaknesses were addressed outside of second round draft pick stock and getting rid of a distraction.

Fox may be better than LaVine overall, but in terms of fit LaVine is arguably better for this team. LaVine is a career 38-39% from 3, almost 45% on 7.5 attempts this year. He provides more spacing and gravity for DeRozan, Monk, Sabonis.

Most of the time, I'd agree with you here. However, it was plainly stated we were looking for a "win now" player. I don't think we, as in the Kings, had much interest in young players. That makes sense if we plan on maximizing our time with Domas and Keegan. We got a player of comparable talent level in Lavine, two firsts and 5 second round picks (most likely). It just isn't that bad. It isn't fantastic, but it isn't horrible either.

We didn't go into this with the idea of rebuilding from the ground up. You have to keep that in perspective.

Fox had broken hands, he litteraly could have sat out the season next week and nobody would have batted a eye.

I honestly don't know what people expected. Spurs are not going to do us any favors. Cassle growth will be extremely dampered with the addition of Fox. I would not have traded for Fox if I was Spurs. I don't think he fits at all with Wimbley. Fox playmaking ability is below average for a pg and he isn't all of a sudden going to give it 100% because he got traded.

Age keeps getting brought up. Fox playing style is going to kill his longevity and he doesn't have the shooters touch. He will never be the shooter Levin is. He will never have the athletic ability of Zack.

Zack also has never had as good of a supporting cast as we have in sac.

Lastly, Spurs supporting cast is NOT better than sacramento. Wembly or not, I'll take our starting 5 over there's today. That's why, despite all the drama this year, we are still ahead of them in the standings.

Spurs are 2 years away min and by that time Fox will be almost 30 himself.

Does anyone know how the trade exceptions work? The team has multiple, can they be combined? And what’s the most salary they can take in?

The trade exception lasts a year, can't be combined with other salaries, can be split up. If things fall out such that we do have a $16.8M trade exception, we could use that to get one player worth $16.8 or two+ players that add up to that amount. For this season we're hard-capped at the first apron, so we probably can't spend the whole thing, but we could technically use the trade exception over the summer when that cap will be removed.

I didn't say they are equal.My point is how much of a gap one sees between those 2, and is that gap that huge that 3 firsts ( or 2 firsts and 5 seconds) plus getting rid of Huerter( who wasn't exactly on a cheap deal) doesn't close it

Seriously, given the knowledge that Fox had us over a barrel (wouldn't sign anywhere but SA, wanted out, would need to be traded within a year, was playing with hurt fingers and could possibly have shut it down for the season if he wasn't moved) what did anyone expect? Yeah, better picks would have been nice, but with the limited haul Dallas JUST got for Luka, I'm OK with this. Let's see how it all plays out before we go ripping this too much. Second rounders are now valuable as well for cost control purposes, and we've restocked the cupboard to be able to make more moves.
