Darius's Contract Max

"A restricted free agent can sign with any team, but his old team has the right of first refusal up to 125% of his previous season's salary or the amount it has available under the cap. If a restricted free agent gets an offer from another team, his original team has 15 days to match it or lose the player without compensation."

Darius made $1.6mil last year, so almost $2mil since we have no cap space and no MLE.

Actually, I think because we have Early Bird rights we can offer him up to the average salary, which is essentially the MLE.

Correct.

The Kings have made Darius a qualifying offer, so don't they have the right to match any offer he receives?

Again, only up to about the MLE - over that and (because we're over the cap) he goes *poof*.

And if Darius gets offered the MLE by somebody, then he should go poof. I really like him, but he's not that good. When he gets an offer sheet from somebody, the Kings will know what the market think's his value is, then they can decide to match or not.

Darius brings one big quality, dependability. Every night you got what you expected from Darius. His hustle, dive on the floor attitude is needed on the Kings. His shot developed very nice and he could pop up the 8-12 you wanted most nights and get those 4-6 rebs. That plus nice PF size and good FT shooting. Not as all around as Kenny Thomas but............ a nice quandry, to keep or not to keep.

So, we can offer him up to the MLE. Is that the max even with a sign and trade? Where I'm getting at is Dever is said to be intrested in him and if I understand everything we could sign Darius for the MLE(5Mil) and trade him for Najera and Elson...

That's what I am wondering. His agent says talks are ongoing and has been saying that for a while. I'm wondering if that's because the Kings are willing to match, but are also willing to do a sign and trade of some sort? Then maybe Darius goes to the team with the best player(s) to offer in a trade? And could it be Darius in a package deal with another Kings player?

Did we spend the entire MLE on Shareef? If yes, then how can we offer him MLE? It's confusing (one of my blind spots).

Its really hard to see Darius coming back here unless we clear up the logjam at PF to get him some minutes. If he came back now he would literally be the 5th big man. I'm sure he'd like to be a more important piece than that for somebody.

We cannot offer him the MLE (yes, it all went to SAR) - what we can do is match any offer for him up to about $5 million (the average salary in the league). The amount is/is about the same as the MLE (average salary is close to the mid-level exception).

Whether or not we have the MLE available doesn't matter in this case.

F. Salary Cap Exceptions

  • Mid-level Exception: For the 2005-06 season, the Mid-level exception will be $5 million. In subsequent years, the Mid-level exception will equal 108% of the average player salary for the prior season.
I. Restricted Free Agency

  • Offer Sheets for players with one or two years of service must comply with the following:
    1. The first year salary may not exceed 108% of the average player salary for the prior year and the second year salary may not increase or decrease by more than 8%.

Unless the Kings feel that they need to have Darius back to increase their flexibility to make a multi-player deal (for example, Thomas-Skinner-Corliss-etc. for someone).

The problem is -- and it's been discussed a lot here -- the key element that they're missing is a 4-5 with toughness and a defensive mindset. Can they get that player without breaking up the core? If so, Petrie wins Executive of the Year right now.

Just found this comment by John Hollinger in ESPN Chat:http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=8979
Robby (Sacto, CA): To follow up your answer about the Kings: What bruising Center/Power Forwards are left of available? And that would play for the Kings (ie Stro Swift)

John Hollinger: They would have to pick somebody up in a trade at this point. It's probably more likely to happen in February than now, unless Petrie can swindle somebody in a sign-and-trade for Songaila.
C'mon GP, lol. (Hollinger also ranks the Kings behind SA, Pho, Dallas and maybe Houston and about even with Denver.)

"Can swindle somebody for Darius S/T"

There are still a handful of teams who WANT Darius. I bet aside from them, there would be more teams who would take him.

I haven't heard who is interested in Darius .... do you know which teams they are ???

From reading around the news sites this off-season, Washington/Seattle/New Jersey/Philly/Denver. All have said they have interest or high interest more than once.

Sure is nice to have too much at PF than too little..

...unless it comes at the expense of the 5 (as in, too much of one, not enough of the other....)

Kings

Forward thinking

Aug 19 - With Shareef Abdur-Rahim in Sactown, there may not be room in the frontcourt for Kings restricted free agent Darius Songaila. Agent Mark Bartelstein said the Nuggets have shown interest in the power forward, the Rocky Mountain News reports.

wait, so thats all you get for subscribing to their site?!?!

I found this comment about Darius on FoxSports.com. I know there is mixed feelings about Darius returning, but I really like his hustle and enjoy watching him play. I hope that we keep him and (as someone mentioned before) trade away some of the other players that are creating the log-jam at that spot.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/4498484

We came across a minor rumor yesterday that the Nuggets are interested in Darius Songaila. He's a restricted free agent, but we can't understand why there isn't more interest in him. Darius can be signed on the cheap and all he wants to do is play D and pull boards. Plus, he can stick the elbow jumper if need be. Seems like a solid addition for a lot of teams. …

Okay...and that is why sometimes national reporters can be so frustrating -- the two things Darius is WORST at are playing D and pulling boards (especially the latter). And that is also, BTW, why the market isn't burning up for him.
