Current Bonzi Status According to ESPN Insider + Kings Interested in Songaila?

Another thing to think about is no where in a contract says that you have to keep this player for the amount of time the player signed for. We can say sign Bonzi for 5 years but then trade hima fter 3. By then Martin will be ready to step up. Personally, I don;t think Martin is ready to start full time, in another 2 to 3 years he will be.

We lose defense and toughness without Bonzi in the lineup. It's taken so long to finally shake of the "soft" label that we've had, I'd hate for us to have that image again. Now, I'm not saying that Martin is Peja soft, but he ain't Bonzi tough either. It'd be a shame to lose Bonzi after making huge strides in becoming a good, tough defensive squad.

Just to add to my previous thoughts. I was sucked into believing that

Bibby
Wells
Peja
SAR
Miller

was a really good team before the start of last season. The truth is that while there is a lot of talent there, they weren't the best at any particular area of the game. The result was a lottery team until Ron came and gave us a strength that we could exploit against other teams.

The last half of the season and the Spurs series showed me that even though we don't have a KG/Duncan type we can attack other teams with the strength we do have - and that stregth is indeed special and unique. Just think we should build off that rather than style rather than take away from it to shore up the bench.

We'd still be tough with Artest here. SAR, while he doesn't show or act tough (like Elton Brand doesn't, just that he's a better rebounder and a shotblocker) most of the time, his post-game relates to being "tough" because of playing down low. Also who knows what bigs we have on the team come late September.

If we got Foster, that instantly adds toughness to any team. Same for Etan Thomas or Magloire.

Come on. SAR admirably plays through pain, otherwise he is the absolute epitome of anti-tough. Soft and pretty. All for show. He's not getting physical with or intimidating anyone.

He doesn't go after balls aggressively enough on the boards, but he doesn't shy away from bodying people up in the post, he dives for loose balls, he boxes out... I wouldn't exactly say he's exactly intimidating anyone out there, but he's not anti-tough.

He's probably not going to average 7.7 rebounds again, more likely around 6.
Funny thing about Bonzi's rebounding numbers last season in that it's not the actual numbers that are impressive.

At least, I don't think so.

What was impressive to me about Bonzi's rebounding throughout the season was the toughness and hustle it showed. The willingness to go after the rebounds. To fight for them. And the ability to recognize and singlehandedly correct the team's biggest weakness.

THAT is impressive. THAT is what earns major points on the Gadget Scale of Player Evaluation. And, best of all, THAT is not something that fluctuates or is dependant on contract status.

Tough is just tough. And Bonzi's tough is worth holding on to.
