Could Rashad Mccants play the point

What does who he is dating matter in terms of him playing the point? He lacks what most SG's lack in terms of being able to distribute the ball. He's not a point guard, never will be!

He looks for his shot first. He looks for his shot second. He looks for his shot third. Then he passes out hoping to get the ball back to look for his shot again.

Rashad McCants himself has already answered that question. "I'm not a true point guard and that's not the position that I claim to play..." (quoted in link)

McCants is a smallish shooting guard or at best a limited combo guard. We have a much bigger reserve 2 guard in Cisco Garcia who also plays 3 and some 1 in a pinch. McCants is a talented player who has a role off someones bench in the NBA, but Garcia is more talented overall and more valuable.

McCants would be a great sidekick... Unfortunately, we have enough of those. We're looking for a superhero ... and maybe an Alfred.

Easy answer: NO!

edit: you cant take a shooter and tell him to be a passer...Travis Mays-effect, just like you cant make a PF play the center position...well, 99% of the time, anyway.

I don't mean to nitpick, but you can take a shooter and tell him to be a passer. You just shouldn't expect him to pay any attention to you.

Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week. Tell your friends.

:p

I can envision a scenario where McCants is playing the "point guard" but Cisco actually brings the ball up the court a la Doug Christie. Of course it would be off the bench and we still would need to find a starting PG.

didnt notice that my bad. im just tryin to think of ways he can get on the floor because of martin in front of him, maybe kev can get more time @ the sf.
Bad idea. Martin has enough problems defending guys his own size. McCants might be able to come in for the PG along with Cisco at the 3. Then on offense Cisco plays PG and on defense McCants moves back to defensing the PG. Either way I'm not sure we get better.

His best chance for PT is as Martins backup.

I want Natt to play Cisco at Pt more and Rashad and Martin on at the same time, just let Rashad Guard the opposing PG. His Defense his pretty sick. I hope Rashad stays a King. The dude is exactly what we need off the bench.

Solomons looks more a PG than McCants who could be good sidekick with Cisco off bench to REALLY energize. In fact, Solomons (1), McCants (2) and Cisco at the 3 worked pretty well. Noce at 4 in small ball and Hawes. THAT combo did well last night.

It did well because both teams were trying to lose the game... Cisco was bullied at the 3 last night by Greene, and it was the case with Gerald Wallace and almost every other bigger athletic 3. I think you'd actually want Kmart guarding the opposing 1's because of his quickness, he can stay in front of anyone he wants... Cisco on the 2, MCcants on the 3 if you want to play that lineup because Mccants has shown he can defender bigger guys at times

I go along with that. Solomons in not a lot of minutes seems also to be pretty quick but too soon to tell. Let's see what Coach does next game.

I would not be against the idea of keeping Mccants, as long as it is for a bargain. He brings a physical presence off the bench, and can get his own shot off. I wouldn't play him at pg though. The guy has no playmaking ability at all. Thats not a knock on him, but I pray whoever is starting at pg next year is not on the current roster.

Why do we need a better pg for next year? It's not like we are trying to get to the playoffs and win a championship next year. If we don't get a great pg in this year's draft or in FA after this season, it isn't too big of a deal. There will be very good PGs in the 2010 draft and a trade may be available later on.

I don't think we need a better pg, but a younger pg with more talent and potential than Beno. I really don't see Beno getting any better, and I would rather see him coming off the bench. If we get a new pg this summer that would be great, if not thats fine to. I don't think Mccants or Beno are the answer.

I agree that no one on our current roster is the answer at pg, but that doesn't mean we need one right now or even next season.

I think they are going to let McCants go for financial reasons. But it sure would be nice if they could transfuse some of that edgy, physical stuff he's got inside him into Martin before he leaves.

Personally, at this moment in time, I'd rather have McCants over Martin. If you want to sacrifice offense to the altar of defense, there's no comparison. McCants can guard small forwards and big guards. Heck, he even guarded a power forward in the Oklahoma City game, and did very well. He blocks shots. He gets on the floor for loose balls. Martin can't or won't do any of the above. Martin may be superior offensively, but is he THAT superior offensively? I don't think so. Six of one, half a dozen of the other. I'll take McCants.

Yea I like McCants all around game over Kevin Martins scoring. And its not like McCants can't score either. I think he can average any where between 18-24 ppg on this team if he was getting Kevin Martin minutes.

Believe me, I would LOVE to replace KMart with McCants. The KMart hype has been going on for too long. Sure, he is a GREAT scorer, and extremely efficient on the offensive end. But where is his defense? His leadership? They are nonexistent. If Ricky doesn't come out this year, we should trade KMart for one of the top picks in next year's draft to get John Wall or Rubio and let McCants take over the SG position.
