On the one hand, the Rockets did a great job of assembling as much length as possible around Sengun. On the other hand, their current point guard depth chart is Reed Sheppard and the worst of the three Holliday Brothers.

Besides doing a very good job of setting up and supporting it's thesis, I thought this video was interesting for a couple of reasons.

(1) I appreciate how it doesn't try to argue a particular type of shot is good or bad in all contexts.

(2) The final point about offense and defense existing in balance and needing to identify a strategy that will maximize your chance to win by considering your personnel and how they can be most effective on both ends of the floor is well taken.

(3) There is a secondary point being made here which I keep struggling to get traction on which is about the concept of defense itself in any game but specifically in basketball. No defense is going to be able to deny all parts of the floor and clever offenses are really good about getting the ball into the places where they want it. There is a tug of war of leverage going on and it's not going to be won entirely with physical superiority. That is to say, the goal of an effective defense should not be to smother the opponent and deny them anything at all. I suppose that would be the goal if the NBA league office which determines the rules and how they are enforced wanted that type of a game but we know that they do not. What a defense should be trying to do instead is to manipulate the offense into taking the shots that the defense wants them taking and this is where the game is won more with intelligence than raw strength. If you know through scouting where a particular offense wants to go then you make sure your defenders get there first. That's one level of it. But the deeper level is to also disguise your intentions and make it look like the offense is getting everything they want. Let them see a path to pass the ball to the high post or an open passing lane to the corner three and then you spring the trap, bring in the weak side help, cut off their path and bait them into taking the floater etc. A team doesn't have to choose to sell out stopping the three or sell out locking up the paint. It should change every night based on who you're playing, what that team wants to do, and how you can trick them into working counter-productively.
