[NBA] Comments that don’t warrant a thread (JUN/TDOS)

That seems counter-productive. I'd rather he trade Keon Ellis if Jaylen Brown is the target. At least then he'd be consolidating some of that SG depth. And we'd still need to acquire a PG and unload a lot of salary to be able to build a real team around Jaylen and Keegan (without half of our first round picks for the next 5-6 years).

I honestly don’t see how we’d get brown without giving up Keegan

Do a bunch of teams have 45mil+ salary players available in a trade?

If a guy like Brown is actually available, it's very rare it's for player talent back. It's for picks.

All it takes is one. The Spurs would probably be the competition there as @Joshyjosh31 said . Obviously you'd want to not trade all 3 but if the Spurs dangled Castle and 2 it'd probably take it and even then probably not seal the deal.

I don’t think moving Brown makes sense. Tatum could be back in time for the playoffs, why are they just completely blowing it up? Tatum , Brown, White and role players is still championship level.

I think it would be about resetting the tax.

Tatum *might* be back for the playoffs next year, but the consensus seems to be that guy coming off of Achilles tears aren't really playing at 100% for a full year after they return, so playoffs next year isn't going to be his time anyway.

The Zinger deal dropped them below the second apron so it seems like mission accomplished. I dunno, I would just be surprised if they pull the plug on a duo that was supposed to win a bunch of titles because of one season ending injury.

They have to drop farther to get under the tax altogether to reset it. It's a blow-it-up move for sure, but the Athletic is estimating that just the Holiday/Zinger deals have saved them $200M in future tax, even getting the Simons contract back. When you can't compete, it's just not feasible to pay that much money. Yet there's still more tax to pay, for now. Maybe they just really start over.

San Antonio got Fox without giving up anyone. And based on their last two trades, Boston's new ownership appears to be more interested in cutting costs than competing right now. Jaylen Brown is around the same level of player as Fox ... a guy who might make 3rd team All-NBA if everything breaks right. He's being paid MVP level money though so that depresses his trade value a bit.

If I were Boston I would ask for Keegan of course but I don't think we should include him in any trade unless we're getting a true MVP level guy. Otherwise we'd be giving up our best young talent to wind up exactly where we are now as a middle of the road team without a lot of assets to build with. That's ultimately going to set us back even further.

And I say that as a huge Jaylen Brown fan. He's probably my favorite non-Kings player in the league right now, but not entirely for basketball reasons. I would love to see him playing for Sacramento but it needs to be as part of a big two with Keegan while Scott Perry figures out the rest of the roster, not as a big three with Sabonis and LaVine.

No surprise Jrue is p-o'd. I don't think he's an easy contract to move though. Will need to show his worth in Portland before someone takes on his contract.

Also not sorry for him, he can live wherever he wants with the generational wealth this last contract has granted him when it's over.

They’re not giving away talent just to cut cost they got rid of Porzingis cause he’s always hurt and saves cap. They got rid of Jrue to save cap but he’s 35 and now they’re out of the second apron. They’re gonna want talent for an all nba player they have no reason to just dump him when they’ve already saved cap. Our best offer without Keegan is Lavine, ellis, Carter, and four firsts it could possibly get him but that would be dependent on Spurs wanting him or not.

Maybe they Sabonis might interest them

I certainly acknowledge that we are less likely to be the high bidders if Keegan is made untouchable. I just don't think getting Jaylen Brown elevates this team to the point where we need to put our one untouchable player into the deal to put it over the top. And I also think it's possible that Jaylen will get traded for less than you're projecting given that there aren't a lot of teams that will want a 9 year veteran with a lot of wear and tear on his legs (124 career playoff games) making an average of $59 million a season for the next 4 years to average 22ppg on mediocre shooting efficiency. He brings intangibles and star power which matter for a maligned franchise like ours. Getting Jaylen Brown would give Scott Perry instant credibility with Vivek. But from a cost/benefit point of view, he's dangerously close to being negative value with his current contract and production.

Right. You don't give away top end talent that's proven to work with your franchise guy. Chemistry and synergy is not built in one day. You can always shed the replaceable role players to get under tax. You don't sacrifice long term gains for short term relief.

Boston can still make the playoffs in the East despite their loss of talent. Who knows if Tatum returns early, they might have an outside shot at glory.

They're my second favorite team and I like the guy a lot but we're not a Jaylen Brown away from being a perennial top 4 seed in the West, especially if we sell the farm to get him here.
