The other guy's name was "other competent coach".
We wasted an entire season firing one just to go hire another too late to matter, but of course it should work. We are no asskickers, but we have one at center, and with competent coaching this roster has shown it can be respectable. With a whole season without outside interference, let alone exotic illnesses, we might have been part of that #8 seed playoff race graphic.
I do have one question, Vivek, Pete, why did you have to wait so long to hire this man?!?!? ugh! I wonder where the team would have been at right now if we just transitioned from Malone straight to Karl....Oh well, nothing you can do about it now, except be excited for how we finish out this season and start the next one.
I'm not still overly bitter about it. In fact, I'm quite excited and happy as a Kings fan right now. It just would have been nice to have Karl sooner. Just because things are getting better, doesn't mean I can't look back and wish we got this thing started with Karl sooner. Like I said, I'm not bitter or even still upset about it. That comment was more about me being thrilled with what Karl is doing and just wishing it could have happened sooner so that we had more time to witness it this season. Sorry if I came off as a Debbie downer or something.Oh, come on... The milk that was spilled has been cleaned up. What little was left has evaporated. I think it's assumed it took so long because there was a lack of consensus in the front office. With the hiring of George Karl, and the addition of Vlade Divac, it appears that situation may well have been resolved.
The guys are definitely starting to buy in.
Defense is improving, it's not Malone good, but there have been flashes.
My thoughts exactly. He just looks really old. In his post game interview tonight he started picking at his head and it was bleeding and it's all I could focus on lol.I hope Karl stays healthy, he just seems really old and fragile.
He is just getting more out of this roster than either Malone or Corbin did overall in a rushed stint with little to no practice and a crazy 8 game road trip very early in his tenure. We are getting meaningful production from role players that did squat earlier in the year. As fun as November was it was really predicated on Cousins and Rudy dominating and little else from anyone. While that was fun it was an injury away from going down the toilet(and thats exactly what happend). I think under Karl and with an upgraded roster next season we can survive those injuries that are bound to happen. His system is more reliant on team play and an 82 game season is just too much to be so reliant on one or two guys. Lets say Cousins goes down for 6 games, I think under Karl we could find a way to go 3-3 and survive those little injuries given a full training camp to really get this team going.

I agree totally. And would only add we then finally replaced mediocre substitute teacher with HOF coach with over 1,000 NBA wins under his belt - nirvana!?![]()
Malone had also had more than a year at the helm at that point. Karl a few months. Compare it to Malone's third month. And if that were only true I imagine that would be a strong point.
Unfortunately as it turns out Omri, Ben, Landry, Reggie and of course Collison were all putting in excellent/better work than Karl has gotten out of them.
Karl on the other hand has gotten more out of DWill, Stauskas (although obviously Nik has many more months of NBA experience now), and McCallum (as a starter in place of DC) or Miller (who was not here)
I can't get easy splits on the entire Malone tenure, so I'm going to use November. Karl is everything post All-Star, but to be equivalent I'll just use March (both March and November have 15gms so far):
By Support Player
McLemore: November 12.1pts (.617TS%) 3.5reb 1.1ast vs. March 11.3pts (.511TS%) 2.5reb 1.9ast EDGE: November
Casspi: November 8.7pts (.631TS%) 3.4reb 1.4ast vs. March 7.9pts (.545TS%) 3.6reb 1.7ast EDGE: November
Landry: November 9.1pts (.575TS%) 4.3reb 0.7ast vs. March 4.3pts (.565TS%) 2.0reb 0.1ast EDGE: November
Reggie: November 4.9pts (.547TS%) 7.6reb 0.6ast vs. March 2.6pts (.492TS%) 5.3reb 0.5ast EDGE: November
Williams: November 4.3pts (.510TS%) 1.6reb 0.4ast vs. March 10.2pts (.608TS%) 2.3reb 0.8ast EDGE: March
Stauskas: March
McCallum: March
Collison: November
Miller: March
Hollins in neither really.
I would argue Jason mattered much more in November as well, but its not in the offensive numbers, so I won't bother trying to push that point.
In any case, point is pretty clear -- Karl has different guys contributing, not necessarily more guys contributing. In fact he's specifically (and wisely even if the personnel choices aren't ideal) tightened his rotations. I suppose you could say the emergent platoons at PG and SG are "more guys contributing", but they are also because the starters aren't contributing as much (and Malone was stuck with Sessions instead of Miller).

if the kings can continue to reinvigorate themselves defensively, and can continue to improve offensively under karl, then they will certainly be primed for some measure of success. but it all hinges on karl's ability to get consistent effort from this team on defense. they're going nowhere without it, so cousins must continue to set the tone on that end of the floor...
Let's not argue over whether Malone was better or Karl.My thoughts exactly. He just looks really old. In his post game interview tonight he started picking at his head and it was bleeding and it's all I could focus on lol.
