Magic Set To Waive Doug Christie5th August, 2005 - 12:11 am

Orlando Sentinel - Making use of the newly installed amnesty clause, league sources in New York confirmed that the Orlando Magic would waive the disgruntled Doug Christie.

Although Christie would still be paid the $8.2 million that he is owed for the upcoming season, waiving him using the amnesty clause would save the Magic just as much in luxury tax payments.

This ends Doug Christie's tumultuous stay in Orlando after being acquired in a trade with Sacramento for Cuttino Mobley.

After only 21 games with the Magic, and with a bone spur surgery looming, Christie left the team shortly after being taken out of the starting lineup.

He reportedly asked to be traded to a West Coast team this offseason.

Magic will waive Christie
Amnesty rule lets guard leave, cuts luxury-tax tab

With no trading partners in sight, the Orlando Magic will waive disgruntled guard Doug Christie in the next couple of days under the NBA's amnesty clause to free up a roster spot and avoid paying $8.2 million to the league in luxury taxes.

Although the Magic declined to comment on the waiver, NBA sources in New York confirmed the upcoming transaction.

Christie still must be paid the $8.2 million he is owed in the final year of his contract, but he will be allowed to re-sign with another team. Franchises exceeding the tax threshold ($61.7 million this season) must pay a dollar-for-dollar tax to the league.

The amnesty waiver can be used only once by each team during the league's newly approved six-year collective bargaining agreement with the players.

Without Christie on the roster, the Magic still will exceed the tax threshold by a few million dollars this season if, as expected, they sign another front-court player in the coming weeks.

The waiving of Christie will put an end to his brief, bizarre stay with the Magic. Christie, 35, grudgingly came in a trade with the Sacramento Kings last season for Cuttino Mobley, but he never was happy and quickly alienated his teammates.

With nagging bone spurs in his left ankle, he left the team without telling anyone shortly after he was taken out of the starting lineup.

He played only 21 games for the Magic, averaging 5.7 points and 2.2 assists in 25.2 minutes per game.

He then demanded another trade, saying he wanted to return to the West Coast.

Christie has told those close to him that he also would like to play in Dallas. The Magic talked to the Mavericks -- and almost everyone else in the league -- about a possible trade in the past month, but nothing materialized.

The Magic already have filled Christie's roster spot with free-agent point guard Keyon Dooling, who was at the RDV Sports-plex on Thursday after signing a three-year, $10 million contract Wednesday.

"I don't know about other people, but coming here was a no-brainer for me," said Dooling, who played last season with the Miami Heat. "I want to be here and help this organization get back to where it was the first time Coach [Brian] Hill was here."

Dooling, 25, is expected to battle Jameer Nelson and DeShawn Stevenson in training camp for playing time in the backcourt alongside Steve Francis.

NBA teams have until Aug. 15 to waive a player under the amnesty rule. Earlier this week, the Portland Trail Blazers waived guard Derek Anderson.

The Magic, in the market for another frontcourt player after No. 1 draft pick Fran Vazquez decided to stay in Spain, are waiting to see whom else is waived. They also are looking at a variety of free agents still available and a possible trade to fill that spot.

Darn! You guys are right on top of things! I was just about to post this. But WOOOHOOO!! I'm so happy for Doug :) I hope Kings can get him back. But I really don't care where he goes, as long as he's not on the Magic anymore and he's happy.

I just hope to god he doesnt goto the Mavs, Suns, Lakers, Warriors, or anyone esle that we wont like :D

Yeah i hope phil doesn't bring him in and start him at point for the lakers, Kinda like he did with ron harper a cpl years back. Him and kobe at the 1 and 2 could be a little scary.

^ Oh god no! I'd be so mad if he ended up on the Mavs or Lakers. Can't stand either team! He'd be good on the Suns..but nah, I can't handle my two fav players on the same team (Doug and Shawn Marion)..just for personal reasons.

::looks for ways to contact Billy King:: Dougie on the Sixers..now I like that! :D

Unfortunately, it sounds like he's heading to Dallas, Seattle as a second choice and Sac a distant third.

The Mobley for Christie trade, at least from the Magic perspective, has got to be the worst trade in a long time. Unlike most other trades, the consequences should have been visible a mile away. An aging, disgruntled guard who loves the place he's in and doesn't want to leave aquired for a young(er) skilled shooter who has been playing well and creating a good team.

Hell if the Sixers do that, then i wouldnt be suprised if they get Vlade and trade for Bo-Jax , :D

it would be cool if petrie could s&t house and evans and trade corliss to orlando for doug.... we really dont need corilss and doug could back up peja.... we wouldnt be keeping house or evans anyways so that would be sweet....

If the Magic wave Doug, the kings don't have to trade anyone to get him. All they have to do is sign him. Orlando will pay his salary for this year and the team he signs with will also pay him.

doubtful that he'll be a king next season (which is a little sad), but wherever he does end up i hope he's happy.

what's up with the obsession with ex kings players?? there is a reason why petrie traded them in the first place. hello- they're not the players they once were. only reason why i'd think they be any good is for locker room presence. christie is done as a player. aging, defense only (he might've lost a step or two), injury prone now.
i heard on the radio yesterday someone said to sign vlade for the vet min. so he could play his last game as a king? sigh... the kings are going in a new direction ppl.

christie is done as a starter but im sure some teams would be more than happy to take him as a bench/role player....... with that said Sacramento is not the place for him... we have way too many guards as it stands

i know that, but they are waiving him because they couldnt find a good trade for him.....

why can't we get christie back? and according to VladeFan he's not limping around like he was during the t-wolves series. he's better. bring him in as a backup. he can still help us.

Cost, and career moves. For DC this is an opertunity to get onto a championship team before retiring. So when he gets offers the 2 things the Kings have to contend with is MONEY (some teams may well be willing to over payfor Dougs services like the Lakers over paid for Vlade's) and teams that are better situated for a championship run may be more attractive. Finaly there is the simple fact that the Kings are already well stocked for gaurds. Bringing in DC is a gaurentee that Martin and Garcia will see virtually no court time this season.

Kings backcourt:

Bibby/Hart/Price
Wells/Martin/Garcia

Sorry, no room for Doug.

Price and Garica are very unproven and won't handle big minutes. Christie could be a swing man, also log minutes at the 3 to back up Peja. Players don't have designated roles as 2nd string SG, 3rd PG, etc. Coaches will play players as the situation demands, and having Christie at the end of the bench to play select minutes could be a valuable tool.

That said, I don't think Doug or the Kings want to deal with that situation, and DC will be a Mav next year.

No thanks. The only way I'd ever wanna see Doug again on the bench would be if he was an assistant coach or something. His playing days are done.
