Chris Mullin to join Kings' front office in senior advisory position

Chris Mullin is joining the Sacramento Kings' front office, according to sources familiar with the team's plans.

Sources say that Mullin has been recruited by the Kings to expand upon his previous senior advisory role in support of new general manager Pete D'Alessandro and majority owner Vivek Ranadive.

D'Alessandro broke into NBA management under Mullin when the Hall of Famer was running the Golden State Warriors' basketball operations from 2004-09, and he has been using Mullin's input on personnel moves since succeeding longtime Kings personnel boss Geoff Petrie in June. Ranadive, meanwhile, was a minority owner of the Warriors before emerging this past spring as the head of a consortium that won the battle with Chris Hansen's group in Seattle to buy the Kings from the Maloof family and keep the franchise in Sacramento.

When Ranadive hired D'Alessandro, he credited Mullin's strong recommendation as a key factor, saying: "[Mullin] told me Pete's the smartest guy out there."

Mullin had been an NBA analyst for ESPN and ESPN Radio since the 2010-11 season. The two-time Olympic gold medalist left the Warriors at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Good news. The more the merrier. Now if we get the "T" we'll have TMC. Who will be Mullin's first addition to the team?

Well, this should come as a big surprise to ... absolutely nobody. :)

When you say good news you may not be aware of Mullin's track record as a GM. :p

Would be different if we had a long term established hand GM of our own, but as is...well we'll have to wait and see. If Nellie shows up somewhere though I am throwing a tantrum.

I feel like Sacramento is in the midst of a hostile takeover by the most pathetic franchise of the last 20 years -- and no, that's not the Kings. That's the Warriors who before last season missed the playoffs 16 of 17 years and now seem to have arrived in force to take over a franchise that once routinely kicked the crap out of them and show the locals how its done, Warriors style.

Let's hope they, like us, have learned something from the experience. And it's different roles for all of them. And, also, they are not where they are today ih order to build on a losing Warriors team over decades. In fact, all of those observations do nothing but make me more willing to run with this bunch. Let's hope we are not disappointed.

I thought this already happened actually haha. I mean he was in the Draft War Room high-fiving and fist-pumping when we picked Ben.

If that happens, I promise to join you in that tantrum.

Just aside note. Ever since D'Alessandro announced that he would not watch the home games from the tunnel it left a void which I'm sure Mullins could quite handsomely fill. Mullins for the tunnel!!!!

I want a whole team of mini-chuckers and 6 ' 6" centers! We have a good start here in Sac don't we Mully!

mullin is a name and for that im happy. I am not happy to be in the same conversation as the warriors or have so many pieces associated with them

Like many others, I like the big name part of the acquisition, but I don't like the Warriors-connection part of it. We aren't the Warriors 2.0 project....

It's fine to hire people your comfortable with in support roles.. and if Mullin hooked both D'Allasandro and Vivek up at some point in time, they may just see it as proper to return the favor. I don't necessarily see him as having a dominant presence in our personnel decisions, but I don't think he's too incompetent as an all star veteran, former announcer and GM to share his outlook

Now we just need to sign Gilbert Arenas and Jason Richardson.

Does this Kings office realize there are 28 other teams in the NBA to poach assets from?

Being an ESPN analyst does allow one to pry into teams and players a lot more than if you work for a team. With the new emphasis on player analytics and chemistry which has been set in motion on the Kings and the fact Chris has been out of the NBA four years makes one wonder that this really is a giant "thank you" from the D'Allasandro-Ranadive connection. Chris can be a help to players and the FO but wonder this is short term.

Scary culture these guys are about to bring in Sacramento.

So what's his official job title? I wouldn't mind him hanging around the players and practices. You'd think a 2x Olympic champion would rub off on our guys somewhat.

From the official press release:

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento Kings announced today the organization has added Chris Mullin as Advisor to the Chairman, according to Owner and Chairman Vivek Ranadivé. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"Chris Mullin is an incredible addition to our organization," said Ranadivé. "I have great respect for his accomplishments and understanding of the game. From day one, we have focused on making the Sacramento Kings a first-class franchise built for the 21st Century. Chris brings the experience, knowledge, and influence to help us achieve our ultimate goal—bringing a championship to the fans and city of Sacramento. As we prepare for the new season and a new era in Kings basketball, I'm really excited about the group of visionary leaders we've brought together."

Mullin, 50, will assume a variety of basketball operations responsibilities, advising Ranadivé and General Manager Pete D'Alessandro regarding player transactions and apprising front office and coaching personnel of the team's collegiate and professional scouting efforts.

"It isn't everyday that a franchise has the opportunity to add an individual of Chris' caliber and reputation," said D'Alessandro. "His passion for the game, unflagging work ethic and will to win, ever-present characteristics which helped define him as one of the NBA's premier players for nearly 20 years, will have a contagious effect on our entire organization," said D'Alessandro.

"I couldn't be more excited about joining the Kings and playing a part in making this team a winner again," said Mullin. "I'm especially grateful for the unique opportunity to work in close proximity with a world-class ownership group led by Vivek Ranadivé and the talented group of individuals assembled in our front office."

A member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (class of 2011), Mullin averaged 18.2 ppg (.509 FG%, .384 3pt %, .865 FT%), 4.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.60 spg and 32.6 mpg in 986 career games with the Golden State Warriors (1985-86 – 1996-97 and 2000-01) and Indiana Pacers (1997-98 – 1999-00). He was named an NBA All-Star five times and notched All-NBA First Team honors after posting 25.6 ppg (.524 FG%, .366 3pt%, .833 FT%), 5.6 rpg, 3.6 apg and career-highs of 2.10 spg and 41.3 mpg in 1991-92. Later that same year, Mullin would win his second of two Olympic Gold Medals as a member of the "Dream Team," finishing third on the roster in scoring (14.3 ppg) behind Charles Barkley and Karl Malone.

Prior to being selected seventh overall in the 1985 NBA Draft out of St. Johns, Mullin earned every All-American accolade in existence as a collegian, including an Olympic gold medal for Team USA at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles. He concluded his career for the Red Storm by winning the 1985 John Wooden Award bestowed upon the nation's most outstanding college player. In 2011, Mullin was elected to the National Collegiate Hall of Fame.

Mullin remained close to the game following his playing career, serving as a special assistant in the Warriors front office before being named Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations in 2004. He would hold the title for five seasons, including one of the most memorable in franchise history as Golden State became only the third eighth-seeded team in league annals to upset a top seed when they defeated Dallas in the First Round of the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

I have always liked Chris Mullin. I was a Warriors fan back in the day before Nelson traded CWebb. That blunder set the W's franchise back at least 10 years. I could no longer support the W's after that in much the same way the Raiders lost support by moving to LA and to a lesser extent with the way Al Davis treated Marcus Allen. Anyhow back to Mullin.

Its too bad Mullin cannot still play, Mully could light up that score board and had surprisedly fast hands.

Mullin as an advisor should be OK. As long and Don Nelson is not in his ear preaching small ball and suggesting the wise and mature approach to handing DMC.
