Cassel demanding an extension??

G-League
"Cassell demands deal

Sam Cassell, traded by the Timberwolves to the Clippers for Marko Jaric, has refused to take a physical with his new team and is demanding an extension on his contract, which has one year to go. Cassell is asking for a two-year deal. The Wolves hope this doesn't kill the deal.

Had the Wolves traded Cassell in the middle of last season as suggested by Flip Saunders, Saunders still might be coaching the team." (http://www.startribune.com/stories/1405/5566202.html)

Good luck, Clippers.

Oh I do blame "Sammy". Same ole crap he's pulled everywhere -- reason he's had so many addresses. Talented player, not worth the trouble. Clips sure did pick a great rolemodel to come in and mentor Livingston.

Rumor has it that when his NBA contract ends he will be recalled by the citizens of his home planet to return to <unpronouncable planet name>.

I really want this trade to go through because I would love to see a backcourt of Cat and Sam just to see the other three guys on the court fume when they never get to touch the ball. Actually, the other three might get to touch the ball since IF Cat and Sam HAVE TO pass the ball they won't pass it to each other because they know that it won't be coming back to them. At least if the ball goes to Brand, Kaman or Magette the ball MIGHT come back to you.

lol. I wonder if he's refusing a physical because it will reveal his chemistry-sucking, coach-killing alien blood.

This was his same problem last summer, wasn't it?? He signed the damn contract a few years ago, and now it's the team's problem? Fat chance...

Cassell should shut up and get over it and himself.

Cry a river, build a bridge, get over it.

Too cliche? *shrugs*

Bad trade for the Clips anyway.

Yes, the last time he had a physical, someone secretly taped it and it excaped as bootlegged copies of "alien autopsy". Rumors have it that his "mother" was quite upset, and was unable/unwilling to produce new egg-pods for three full quasar-cycles. The whole collective suffered-- to the point that the hive had to cancel its annual "eat the unproductive larvae (children)" festival, for fear that the upcoming cycle of maturing drones would be unable to sustain an effective level for its spring swarm.

If only the heartless clippers/twolves would pay-up their just due, unit-cassell would be able BUY some larvae for the damn feast. The NBA is so insensitive to the needs of family obligations.

Same Ol Sam. But if he thinks he is going to hold Bud Sterling up for more money he is in for a rude awakening. Im not shure if refusing to take his physical will kill the deal. (Remmeber Jim Jackson's little temper tantrum?) Proof positive that Minny is well rid of a distraction they did not need. Of couse the Lakers are dam near desperate for a PG, I would not be surprised to see them act as a White Knight to thier housemates in the Stapels Center.

They are, but this is Phil Jackson we are talking about, and Sam is just not hsi kind of PG. In fact he really doesn't LIKE true PGs. Reports are that he's back to his old Ron Harpring tricks again this summer looking to plug in Derek Anderson or Aaron McKie in as a "PG" with huge size/defense etc., and then let Kobe and Lamar do all the ballhandling ala Jordan/Pippen.

Too bad Phil just does not get it. Kobe and Lamar are NOT Jordan and Pippen, not even close.

Jimmy Jackson's "little temper tantrum" got the desired results. He didn't have to go to the team they originally tried to trade him to. He ended up in Phoenix.

With Cassel, I would be very careful. I cannot help but wonder if he's trying to get the extension BEFORE any kind of physical because he knows he might not pass.

It will be a good day for the NBA when that whiner is gone, IMHO.

Didn't they add something into the new CBA to make sure stuff like Jim Jacksons situation won't happen again? I think its too late for Sam.

That's right, remember it being mentioned. Not sure of the details though. Glanced at the parts of the new CBA which are up online (you can find it at nbpa.com -- the player's association website), but nothing jumped out. Will look deeper later when I have mroe time, but a lot of it is not up yet, so it may not be online yet.

10.ASSIGNMENT.
(a) The Team shall have the right to assign this Contract to any other NBA team and the Player agrees to accept such assignment and to faithfully perform and carry out this contract with the same force and effect as if it had been entered into by the Player with the assignee team instead of with the Team. The Player further agrees that, should the Team contemplate the assignment of this Contract to one or more NBA teams, the Team’s physician may furnish to the physicians and officials of such other team or teams all relevant medical information relating to the Player.

(b) In the event that this Contract is assigned to any other NBA team, all reasonable expenses incurred by the Player in moving himself and his family to the home territory of the team to which such assignment is made, as a result thereof, shall be paid by the assignee team. Such assignee team hereby agrees that its acceptance of the assignment of this Contract constitutes agreement on its part to make such payment.

(c) In the event that this Contract is assigned to another NBA team, the Player shall forthwith be provided notice orally or in writing, delivered to the Player personally or delivered or mailed to his last known address, and the Player shall report to the assignee team within forty-eight (48) hours after said notice has been received (if the assignment is made during a Season), within one (1) week after said notice has been received (if the assignment is made between Seasons), or within such longer time for reporting as may be specified in said notice. The NBA shall also promptly notify the Players Association of any such assignment. The Player further agrees that, immediately upon reporting to the assignee team, he will submit upon request to a physical examination conducted by a physician designated by the assignee team. (d) If the Player, without a reasonable excuse, does not report to the team to which this Contract has been assigned within the time provided in subsection (c) above, then, upon consummation of the assignment, the player may be suspended by the assignee team or, if the assignment is not consummated or is voided as a result of the Player’s failure to so report, by the assignor Team. In either case, the Player’s Compensation may be reduced by the NBA by the imposition of a fine in an amount equal to the lesser of (i) ten (10) percent of the Player’s full Compensation for the then-current Season, or (ii) $50,000.

(Part of the player contract.)

From ESPN's Marc Stein:

2. A trick that attracted even more attention last season -- after
Alonzo Mourning and Jim Jackson refused to report to Toronto and New
Orleans to eventually force their way to title contenders -- will be
personally addressed by the commissioner from now on. The new rules
empower David Stern to fine or suspend such players, and word is he
plans to swing the hammer hard in hopes of dissuading future Zos from
holding out after trades. Mourning was able to sign with Miami after the
Raptors, who had acquired the veteran center from New Jersey in the
Vince Carter trade, bought him out for an estimated $11 million. Had
Stern possessed this option last season, Zo likely would have been
forced to miss a handful of games through suspension upon joining the Heat.

As he should be. I can not believe that he would try to blackmail a team just so he can get a contract extention. He should earn it on the court and not through underhanded means like he is doing now.

ODOM and Kobe may not be Pippin / Jordan (thats a HELL of alot to ask of anybody, to say the least) but they are pretty damn good. I think the system could really flourish with them, and it is a REALLY good idea to use Odom more as the primary handler in the half court. He is by no means selfish (in fact if anyhthing he has a little bit of the brad miller syndrom of being too defferential)

I actually am a bit worried about the possibility that the LA experiment mifgt work. --Odom flourishing under the triangle and Zen's tutelage --Kwame growing up a little and actually contributing. If LA becomes a force, the rate that sicophants will be strapping on the knee-pads in front of the great god pj will TRUELY be unbearable.

IF LA flourishes I may not strap on knee pads but MY opinion of PJ will be greatly improved. Odom probalby will flourish in the triangle, and of course the Kobester will ALLWAYS get his, problem becomes a decided lack of passing skills among the other mor or less non threats on the floor, dead wood like Mihm, guys with borderline IQ's like Brown really kill the basic teories of the Triangle and probably will turn the offense into a 2 man game agian. When that 2 man game was Shaq and Kobe with some decent shooters on the floor with them that was great, but Odom is not exactly unstopable in the paint and lacks the benifit of the doubt that Shaq gets as well. In short it will be a whol differnt story.

LOL, the only growing Kwame needs is the growing of his hands. He must be the only PF who can't palm a ball. LOL. Even I can palm a ball, and I am only 6'0.

Some Cassell, and Wolves news:

"Point guard Sam Cassell plans to discuss his contract situation with the Clippers before joining the team that acquired him from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a sign-and-trade deal last week, his agent said Thursday. Through his representative, Charles Tucker, the 12-year veteran expressed "overall concerns" about the Clippers, who sent guards Marko Jaric and Lionel Chalmers to Minnesota for Cassell and a lottery-protected first-round pick in next year's draft."

"Cassell's outspokenness in his desire for an extension, his steep decline in production in the 2004-05 season after having been an All-Star two seasons ago and his age (he turns 36 on Nov. 18) spurred the Timberwolves to end their up-and-down two-year relationship. The Clippers signed Jaric to a six-year, $37.9-million contract and packaged him with Chalmers for Cassell, who has a $6.1 million salary in the final year of his deal."

"Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, Cassell has no rights to force the Clippers to offer him an extension or demand another trade. He is scheduled to undergo a physical Tuesday in Los Angeles, and the Clippers have already made things clear to Cassell: No extension discussions now."

"Players have one week to report and undergo physicals with their new teams after trades, so Cassell should have technically reported no later than today, but the Clippers extended Cassell's report date to Tuesday to accommodate his schedule. The delay stirred media speculation that Cassell had refused to report. "Scheduling issues have been the only reason for any delay," Baylor said."

"Glen Taylor said he didn't set out to trade Sam Cassell this offseason. But when the opportunity presented itself, Taylor didn't oppose the move, either. The Timberwolves' owner said he wanted his team to enter October's training camp free of distractions and didn't like the "threat" he received within the last month from Cassell and his agent. "They actually came to us and said re-sign him or trade him," Taylor said Thursday. "My response was I should wait until (Cassell) comes into camp and see what kind of shape he's in and go from there."

"Taylor said the trade was made to help the Wolves improve defensively and get younger and more athletic on the perimeter. Any friction with Cassell was not the impetus for the trade, Taylor said, but it certainly didn't endear the player to the owner. "I didn't like that we were already kind of doing the little threat thing," said Taylor, referring to the implication that Cassell might hold out if not given a contract extension."

"Said Cassell's agent, Charles Tucker: "I certainly never threatened Glen. We talked. If Sam is part of your future, he'd love to be here. If not, then he has the right to move on."

"Cassell was quoted as saying Wolves star Kevin Garnett was upset about the trade. Taylor refuted that notion. Taylor said Garnett likes to be informed of the team's philosophy and the reasons behind changes."

"Wolves free-agent forward Eddie Griffin's signed contract has been sent to the NBA offices for approval. The team is expected to officially announce the signing soon. Griffin signed a three-year deal. He holds a player option for the final season."

http://www.insidehoops.com

Crazy stuff with the Cassellings and Clippers..

Well, looks like Griffin is officially gonna sign with the Wolves now. No more of all this "Expect" "Announced soon" crap that's been going on for the past month. Like he already is locked up, was so stupid.

A somewhat different story -- but I think whether they revive to at least being a playoff contender really depends on how big a burnout case PJ is. When he came back, it sounded like it was all about the money, and he had none of his usual swarmy swagger. If he really doesn't care anymore, or jsut wants to give that impression precisely because he doesn't think he can win and wants to preserve his legacy by making it appear he's not even trying, then they go nowhere. But if he's serious and engaged, then they have a shot to bounce back in fairly large way this year and be a good team again. No title contender, but a winner. Kobe and Odom are very mucha PJesque pair. Looks like they re trying to sign a PJ point guard. Mihm is not a bad young center, and could again fit in the pre-Shaq PJ center tradition. If Brown blossoms at all they would have all the pieces to be a PJ winner on a lesser scale.
