Can the Kings Make the Playoffs with This Team

Based on what you have seen the last few weeks (particularly the last 4-5 games) does this version of the Sacramento Kings have a realistic shot to make the playoffs, barring no major injuries.

I threw logic out the window and voted with my heart...and paid no attention whatsoever to the "realistic shot" proviso in your post, since it wasn't in the poll question itself.

:)

I'm going to assume "can" they means "is there a decent chance" rather than "is there any chance".

If we do make it to the playoffs, by some fleeting chance, it will most likely be as the 8th seed, and one-and-out. A glimmer of hope, and despite our improvements, still mediocrity, although it's all relative.

can they make the playoffs? - well, of course they can.

will they make the playoffs? - I doubt it.

side note: not many people thought that the Rockies would win the National League at the All Star break, but it sure was fun to watch.

they will make the playoffs. everyone always underrates the kings and im sick of it. nobody outside of this forum seems to realize how good the kings have done so far this year without our PG, missing a lot from our best scorer, and missing a good number of games without the heart and soul of our D. First game we have all of our starters in place, look what happens, we rout the nets. I truly believe the Kings are a solid team, and in a few weeks i think we'll start getting the recognition we deserve. To even consider the playoffs with the number of injuies we've had is crazy, but we're only 4 out. Kings will make the 08 playoffs in my book

honestly, i think this is what it comes down to.

if we spend the rest of the year with mikki as our starting pf, we wont make it.
if we can go out and get a average pf, i think we have a chance.

that is the Ron Artest that every team wants. If we could get that Ron everynight and that Bibby everynight and that bench play everynight even with our top scorer having a suppar evening we could indeed make the playoffs standing pat. Now can they play like that night in and night out the rest of the way. Can they come together for 1 goal and not individual goals? If they can do these things yes they can make the playoffs. some want to compare this season to last. Last season we didn't have half of this Brad Miller or half of this Mike Bibby and no pg whatsoever off the bench. For the first time in 2 years I don't cringe when the bench plays. We are not only keeping our lead but we are building on it with the bench. So guys keep it up and see what happens.

We will be #11 in the WC, unless some other team explodes or implodes, in which case we could be #10 or #12. We will only be #8 if a flash flood destroys most of the southwestern US.

The current #8 seed is Golden State -- they are now on a 48 win pace.

The current #9 seed is Utah -- they are now on a 47 win pace and picking up steam.

The current #10 seed is Houston -- they are now on a 44 win pace and about to get TMac back.

We have to go 30-12 to catch Golden State's pace, 29-13 to catch Utah, and 26-16 to catch Houston for #10. And we have to do it all while playing 32 of our last 42 games against the West.

The thing is that you can't go by that logic because chances those teams WONT keep up that current pace. What if one of the goes on a losing streak of some sort? then what? At BEST they will continue that pace, especially Golden State who will start losing sooner or later. We also have many games against those teams. If we can win those game, then we do have a chance to make the playoffs.

haha "pace" means absolutely nothing, it will change everyday.

Of the top 11 teams in the west the kings are the only one's having a loosing record in the western conference (7-13) while having a record of (0-5) in our division. So we have a long way if we even consider ourselves a threat to make the playoffs.

If it were one team only, that would be possible. Something could happen.

Its not one team. Its 7 teams winning 50 at the moment, and then three more in the mid to upper 40s. All three of whom made the playoffs last year, and two of whom won 50 themselves. This pace is very much exactly the pace they should be playing at. In fact two of the three have somewhat underacheived to this point.

So yes, pace means a helluva lot. Teh odds of all three of those teams simultaneously falling off from where they are at are quite long. In fact we, if we were actually going to try to make the playoffs, would be fortunate if one of them at least does not actually IMPROVE. Which means that bottom line that 47-48 win #8 seed is likely to be pretty much the number.

We have almost no shot. The formula for our playoff appearance goes a) Kings win 70% of games, b) all three of the teams ahead of us start losing ground. That is an unlikely set of events to say the least.

Nobody has been underrating the Kings the past few seasons, we haven't been very good, as predicted.

We've done significantly better than expected given the injuries, but even when healthy, this is still a mediocre team.

We routed the Nets. Whoop-dee doo. You know who else routed the Nets? Charlotte and Portland, not to mention Detroit (twice), Washington, Boston, Cleveland, etc. One average team routing another average team doesn't make the former average team a playoff contender.

I want the Kings to win, I really do. Its fun. I get a thrill out of watching them play great basketball. I go to a small number of games each year. I want to see them play well. I don't like paying to watch losses. I can watch losses at home in HD. I know they are trying to win. I know we have a good coach and a decent bench. I am also realistic. The current group of guys we have out there is not going to take us to the promise land. The onus is on Geoff to make a deal to significantly improve us.

First off I would like everyone to know I am a new member and an avid kings fan for 14 years.
The Kings are a threat to make the playoffs despite to loss tonight. We have to remember this is only the second game artest, bibby, martin have started this year. We have still won 6 of 9 and if we pull put a victory in utah which this team is capable of that will be 7 of the last 10 and 4-2 with everyone healthy. We cant get to low after one loss, eventhough we looked teribble tonight. If you subtract the 7 games because artest was gone we are within a game of .500 without bibby. We lost the game in denver(garcia got fouled) and have given awat at least 2 other games. This team could be a couple games over .500 if artest wasn't suspended. Now we have everyone back and there is no reason why this team can't continue to build and gain momentum and make a run at 45 wins and the 8 seed. Everyone might be pissed we lost tonight, but we still won 6 of 9 and if we go 18-9 at the same win.% over the next 27 games we would be 36-32 and in a position to do something special given the misfortune to start the season.

I completely agree with everything you have to say. After one loss I feel it is wrong for us to say we are completely out of the playoff picture. Go Kings!

Just a question but how is the 8th seed something special?

Dear Kings:

I don't think you are as good as you think you are.

Love,
Simon Cowell

ps: no I don't think this team is playoff bound - I don't think we are good enough up front - but they have already exceeded my expectations this year so I am loving my Kings warts and all.

Let's make this a REAL bet:

I say if the Kings stand pat they make the playoffs.

If I'm wrong, I'll take a 6 month ban from the site. And I think it'd be fun to do likewise if those who take the other stance take a ban if they're wrong (Get rid of all the damn pessismism on this board - at least for a few months).

"So you're saying we have a chance."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/playoffodds

"Impossible!"

"No, no....improbable"

That's actually quite excellent in a geektastic way. Of course the most depressing number might be the one on the far right.

It is obvious to anyone who gives it any thought that the Kings suddenly winning 70% of their games while all of our competitors conveniently not only do not improve themselves, but actually start to slide, is a longshot to say the least. Hollinger's computer thinks so too.

30-11 to reach 48 wins now BTW. In 2002 we won 61 games (74%) on our run toward a title. Now we would have to win 73% just to maybe get an 8 seed (if any of our opponents do not cooperate, we STILL might not get it).

So we're 5 games out in the loss column and we have a 1.9% of making the PO's with our starters finally playing together for the first time last week. I don't buy that argument at all.

we're 5 games below .500 and the next three teams in the standings are 4, 6, and 7 games above .500. that is a steep hill to climb; you're not just depending on the starters to play well (which they could, just not consistently), but also that three teams with equal or better talent (as evidenced by the current standings) sliding.
