Can K-Mart play Small Forward?

if the presumed griffin, rubio and thabeet is off the board.... petrie may go with the best player available, instead of reaching for a point guard at #4.... if he picks the BPA at #4, the most complete player is James Harden... he may turn out to be like brandon roy, as a best case scenario... he is still only 20 years old and has more upside than most people think....

if petrie does take harden at #4, can K-mart play the small forward?... he has the height at 6'7", but is light at about 190lbs...i think if the kings play an uptempo style, like the westphal suns did, K-mart may be able to play the small forward.... is about the same height and weight as francisco garcia, who plays the small forward....

if the kings take the bpa (harden) at #4 and draft a point at #23, like darren collison or patty mills.... i think collison can become a rajon rondo type point guard...

the kings new lineup would be.....

PF Jason Thompson
SF Kevin Martin
C Spencer Hawes
SG James Harden
PG Darren Collison

I can answer your question very easily ...

Can Kevin Martin can play small forward? No.

kevin martin - 6'7" 190 lbs
lebron james - 6'8" 250 lbs

no thank you to match-ups like that...

;)

kevin martin is clearly a one-position player. he's a skilled SG. he shoots the ball very well. he scores the ball very well. it would be criminal to limit his effectiveness by playing him out of position...

I have to question your assumption that picking Harden is a real possibility. We don't need a shooting guard at this point. We need and are pretty openly and actively looking at point guards.

you are assuming that petrie will be drafting for NEED (i.e. PG) as opposed to Best Player Available..... petrie usually drafts the BPA, regardless of position, thus so many swing men and shooting guards he's drafted (i.e. peja, hedo, wallace, douby, martin, garcia)...

harden was given an individual workout and he did impress, so yes, i would assume he is a real possiblity at #4

Drafting for need is one of the most dire mistakes any GM can make.

I do believe that if Petrie thinks Harden is the best player available at 4, he'll take him. I'm a huge Harden fan. I really like his game, but I'll be shocked if he's our pick. The Kings really need a point guard, and the talent line separating Harden from Rubio, Flynn, Jenning's and Evans is a thin one.

This is a draft top heavy in point guards. The Kings need a point guard, and likely, may have the first choice of one. I would be shocked if they passed on that opportunity.

The answer to this one is a fairly obvious no -- can only imagine the joy of watching Kevin have to try to check LeBron, or Melo, or Marion, or Odom or just so many whoevers inside. Its just not practical. And yes, if Petrie was truly 100% convinced that Harden was the BPA when we pick that would create a quandry, but its not one that can be solved by playing either guy at a position for which they are obviously not equipped.

james is 265 plus

I remember an instance, a year or two ago, where Kevin was posted up and scored on several times by Luke Walton. I would like to repeat that for emphasis: LUKE WALTON!!! What somebody even remotely competent would do to Kevin, I don't even want to imagine.

i think he could play sf on offense but on defense he would get outrebounded.

he could play sf on offense and then have harden play defense on the small forward... harden may give up some inches, but he is built much like bonzi wells was, and bonzi played some small forward

If we take Harden how about we try to make him play SF

6'5

222

I mean he is no LeBron but he pretty strong benching 17 at the combine the highest amongst guards.

that is a possibility.... he is actually bigger than bonzi wells was.... bonzi was 6'5" 210lbs and played the guard-forward swing man position.... harden probably could play some small forward

That would be a pretty meager lineup in the playoffs, but we're not worried about that yet, are we? Martin would get eaten alive by anyone who weighs more than 220 lbs. I have to say though, I think it would toughen his butt up, a couple years of Martin playing the 3 and we may have a totally different player on our hands.

I really like that lineup. I would make him do it, he can start at the 3 but he better start averaging 5 rebounds a game. A side benefit of starting him at small forward is Martin's proclivity for drawing the foul, he could compensate for his size by getting his man in foul trouble early.

Let's see: 18 pts, 4 or 5 rbds, 3 assists. I would even expect about 2 steals because of his quickness. I would take that from him every day. I mean come on, Rashard Lewis plays power forward effectively for goodness sakes. It's not a very clear "NO" as far as I'm concerned, especially with our record.
